Is Ebay REALLY Gay (Egay)?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Groucho, Aug 8, 2005.

  1. I sell stuff on Ebay all the time and people send money right away. However, when i sell stuff on the HAMB it's like pulling fucking teeth (sometimes) to get paid. I've waited "TWO" months sometimes! I sold a few things to SIX different people recently on the HAMB, and the first to pay was a "GIRL" (thank you), and the second was a guy overseas (thousands of miles further than the rest of the buyers). Hell, some of the late people didn't know what the fuck i was talking about for a minute when i PM'd them about the money. Er, uh, duh, what parts? Er, oh, oops, those parts! I'll have to ask you guys QUIT calling it Egay with your HORRIBLE paying habits on the HAMB. Now, don't get me wrong, this ain't about everyone. But, it's definately enough of you to make mention.

  2. If I can't raise the money right away, I usually tell them it'll be a week or so up front so if they need the cash right away, to sell it to the next guy in line.

    I haven't forgotten you Ben...

I have had as many 'Checks in the mail' stories here as folk that actually paid....

Everyone needs to remember that the internet is just a cross section of the world and there are 'Deadbeats' everywhere :)

I understand your point. I wish I had something worthy of selling. All my extra shit goes in the trash....

The items I sold on the HAMB were paid for right away. HOWEVER, not all the items I posted here sold, if there is no interest here it is off to eBay.

I've got to say I'm guilty on three fronts. Sometimes it takes me too long to pay, sometimes it takes me too long to send items, and sometimes it takes me too long to follow up on money I'm owed for items I've sent.

I'll try to do better. That isn't sarcasm - I'm serious. It's time for me and anyone like me to step up a bit. The HAMB is getting bigger daily and we shouldn't have to have an interenet beatdown every month.

I've sold on Ebay for the past 7 years with no major problems.
Twice now I've GIVEN stuff to HAMBers only asking to have the shipping costs paid. Getting a thank you from the people that recieved the items (essentially for free) was like pulling teeth. Frustrating.

Ever notice that some eBay guys in Europe and Australia pay faster than some guys two states away?

I think we monitor this as best as we can. In the end, buying and selling on the HAMB is your risk... That said, people don't do a good enough job informing us when there is a snag in the buy/sell process. Trust me, if I know a deal is going sour I am all over it and can usually do some good. What can we really do if we aren't informed?

I'm all ears if you guys have ideas on how to improve the process.

Truth be known, I'm somewhat of a junk dealer, selling shit on Ebay almost constantly, but whenever I have something that might be of interest to a HAMB member, I always post it here to let the other HAMB'ers get first shot at it, usually at a much discounted price. I've had nothing but good luck with HAMBers and Ebayers too.

I will say that Paypal is something that everyone should have, and the fees are worth every penny. You can use your credit card to get payment out right away if you're "a little short" and sellers can get stuff shipped out right away instead of waiting for a check that may or may not be coming.

I think if you know who's a bullshitter and who's serious, if you can smell a scam right away, you won't have any problems selling stuff to people anywhere on the Internet. Sometimes it's painfully obvious, but people still don't catch it. I'd love to stay and chat, but I have to go cash this US postal money order from Nigeria and send the $4000 difference back to the 0 feedback bidder for the $50 parts car the guy did "Buy It Now" on 10 minutes ago. I wonder why he's "No longer a registered user"?

PayPal still scares me, or maybe I'm just cheap and want full payment for my sale.

People who come out with crap like EGAY are generally fags, or thinking about it.
Straight people don't think about it.
I find ebay, fast, efficient and pretty damned safe provided you avoid the obvious bullshit.
Paypal I also find fast and efficient.
It offers the buyer the same safety guarrantees as any creditcard transaction.
If you leave it in there, for a current account you get better interest than any bank, and money is available for online transactions or into the bank in rapid time.
I think both ebay and paypal are pretty safe and secure as lok as you've got more than 3 braincells.
I've never made a bad buy or sale on ebay and even use paypal to transfer cash iternationally between myself and my agent in England.
    It's rapid and cheap.

How about just holding the "goods" 'til the money shows up (check clears, etc.)? That puts the burden on the buyer, instead of yourself.

me and my ol lady would've been REAL poor while we were in school if it weren't for ebay. we'd makes at least $100 a week selling crap we'd buy at goodwill & salvation army. My 53 will probaly be hitting the bay pretty soon since it hasn't even gotten many offers on here and any other sites online.

As far as the hamb goes, theres good deals and bad deals just like everything else, I dont' really see it as being better or worse than buying from anywhere else on the net.

I for one, never use e-bay...preferring to offer what I have to HAMBers first...that said, I have never had occasion to PM or e-mail someone about an item they bought from me and usually have every transaction done thru PayPal...everyone I've ever dealt with here has been straight up with me... apparently that's not true with every member and I've yet to find out about it...and I sympathise with you...but keep in mind, even the HAMB is made up of all kinds of people with different views on honesty, what's right and what's not right...

    ePay, not eBay, or eGay.

ePay cause I always seem to find something I need, but two yahoos have been at a bidding war for the previous 8 dyas and the part is 10x's what it should go for. But I still need it, and haven't seen one for sale for awhile. So I end up in a conundrum, do I pass and try to swap meet it for cheaper, fingers crossed. Or do I nut up and pay way the hell up, cuase its a must have piece. ePay.

eGay is the auction sight for gay porn and anything else that the into same sexs are into.

I don't ship nothing until the money is in hand. If not PayPal, I always get confirmation that a money order, wire transfer, etc. will take place on such and such a date. If someone drags it out, I provide a deadline or it goes to the next person in line.

I really do not expect to receive anything untill the seller has the money in hand. I have only sent something to someone(who said he really needed it) and never got paid. So now, it leaves my house when I have the payment in hand.
As long as there is communication between the buyer and seller through out the deal, I do not have a problem if they are going to be late with payment or merchandise as long as I know why and when it will arrive.

  23. Yeah, hold the parts is what i'm trying to AVOID! If i wanted to HOLD parts, i wouldn't be selling the shit.

I help fund my hobby by buying parts and selling the stuff I don't need. As I am sure a lot of you do.

That said, so far (three years and runnin') every HAMB transaction has been satisfactory. And for the most part so has E-bay.

I will usually list parts here first, at what I feel is a reasonable price, then if no on is interested it's into "the bay" with'em.

I have to say, I really appreciate some of you NOT buying my shit after seeing what it brought at auction.lol

    Communication is the key.

  26. Most online sales will say something like "Payment within ten days or...."

The "friends" aspect of the HAMB makes us feel like we don't need to state that, and guys that do the buying don't think about the guy on the other end.
To the seller, it might be a car payment or a light bill...
Not too many people sell their stuff just because they don't like having nice things...
    It's the $$$.
Having no feedback, except to just, outwardly, bash the guy on the main board kinda makes it tough to point it out and have it sink in, too.

People's "wants" are bigger than their needs, usually, and they cut themselves short... and, most people want too much to begin with...
Then, when they realize they can't cover their needs. Then, they extend themselves credit on your transaction.

So... From now on... write something like...
Payment within 10 days or I'll squirt lighter fluid in your cuffs and set your pants on fire, and sell it to someone else, fucker.
Then, if they don't pay ya, relist it, and hope the next guy is better with his finances.

I've seen a bunch of guys come on the HAMB just to buy and sell shit, too. Some names you only ever see in the classifieds. Never answering questions or being helpful in any way. Those I overlook, without a second thought.
Some have come here in that way, and found some friends, though, too.

All you can do is hope for the best on the other end, I guess.

Maybe some sort of seperate "Reminders" forum, here on the HAMB?
Sort of a public way of saying... "Hey dude. What the fuck?" without starting crap on the board.
Having the risk of it being put out there, for everyone to see, might make a guy think twice about buying something else with your money....
    Just a thought...

It's funny how folks that haven't had any problems with eGAY or PayPUNKS think that it's safe & everything is hunky-dory. Why don't you fools wake up & try a search on Google or Yahoo & see how many people have been fucked by both!!! I personally haven't been had by paypunks, but have seen cases where people have lost $30,000 or more. If you have a pypunks account don't keep ANYTHING in your checking that you CAN'T AFFORD TO LOOSE!!!
I HAVE been fucked by eGAY after paying for shit that I never got - & eGAY does NOTHING about it. If you get shafted in the ass than it's appropriate to call it eGay! ;) (No I am not fucking queer!) I will no longer do business with anyone that has less than 98% pos. feedback (& only then if there's not much money involved) & usually only buy things that I can pick up localy.

I only sold one thing on the hamb and it worked great!

I responded to a want ad for caddy stuff for Johnnycola because I just met a guy who had some. Johnnycola said he would buy it but he lived in wisconsin or somewhere. Well I went and bought the stuff for him with my money and his word he wanted it.
well, He came down from wisconsin personally and paid for the stuff, then hung out and bullshitted for a while about cars.

I made no money off this deal and if he had not come through it would have pissed me off real good but he was totally on point and followed through.

My one hamb experience was fine.

    The HAMB rocks

  29. Ive bought and sold on ebay for 7 years and have found it to be a serious marketplace...Ive bought and sold and gave away= here on the HAMB and for the most part its great.

I use PAYPAL and have for years -Id recommend it to sellers Wholeheartedly and if you cant figure out that all ya have ta do is add 3 per cent to your asking price to be the same as a cash sale -I CANT FUCKIN HELP YA!:D
It MAKES a sale happed and it is safe and instant payment so you can ship immediately -Kind of a no brainer....Sure if you make a habit of selling something that sombody will want to return to you will have trouble in ANY MEDIUM.....

Never looked at it that way, but why screw a normal buyer out of that extra 3%?
