IS High not low enough to be cool?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by choprods, Feb 29, 2004.

  1. I have a question for the HAMB.I have two model A's,I am wanting to build....one is a 29 coupe/cut roadster on A rails and the other is a 31 real roadster on 32 rails. both are UNchanneled sittin stock on top of rails.
Both will have big and little 16 inchers.

My question is this......would it be totally uncool to have em sit that High in front? the one with A frame is an stock axle under a reversed eye spring on stock A crossmember. the 31 will have a model A crossmember in the 32 frame with same spring set up.
I am kinda getting tired of looking at the same dropped axle with fourbars or hairpins on so many cars I thought it would be fun to use the old stock axles and Radius rods on both cars. could it look good by maybe dropping them in rear a litle lower[2-3"] than front?
And would that be correct for WHAT period of hot rodding historically?
[IMG] [IMG]Oh and I confess-I am a cheap ass and want to use stuff I have........

Keeny..I'm building my 36 5 window to sit nose high with a 40 Ford truck front crossmember and spring on top of the axle should sit damn high....but I'm a little sick...

  3. Hi Neal- I love thos channelled cars with the suicide perch mount and the Z-d rear with thgose wheels above the quarters!!!!BUUUUUT- I dont wanna loose any floor space. also on the other hand I dont like the magazine clone look of the bought front end package thatis on sle every where you look?????is it jus me or is this boring to see so many built exactly the same.WHEN was it that a hot rod or JALOPY- looked high up in stance and maybe even higher in front than rear?I am willing to take my chances on the loss of handling it should result in-..........Kenny

  6. Good point Brian- BUUUUUT-I am just as tired of seeing cars so damnd low that they cant really be driven/or enjoyed when inside riding with everything above your belt sticking out of the damned interior like bullwinkle the moose in a pedal car! [IMG]

Brian, that might be the funniest post I've read in a long while... I'm in tears man.

As for "up there" front ends, to me it might not be cool but it could be fun... As for Jalopies with front ends higher than the rear, I don't think I've ever seen a wide spead trend of such a thing. Course, my historical knowledge is pretty much limited to what Dean Batchelor writes to me!

  8. thats good in my opinion PHSYCOBO'Y-But I was leaning towards lowering the rear for an uphill attitude....kinda slightly gasser/jalopy??? SURELY- there was a time when they first pt flattys in A's thet the didnt lower the chassis- JUST DROPPED IT IN AND FLEW!!!! [IMG]

Tommy, that roadster has the PERFECT early stance in my opinion...

  11. Tommy- that roadster of yours looks great- I was concerned that me using the stock undropped axle might be so high as to make me a restorer......Imainly dont want to saw off either cars frame horns.

I agree with you...I just had found that picture and had to use it somewhere! If they had gotten the wheel/tire thing right, it wouldn't be so bad...why do so many people have trouble with the most elementary or things? It's really easy to remember...Big on Back! This old POS wan't scraping and it was cool as hell!

  13. Neither car will run a hood-the 29 will have a stock29 grille shell and the 31 will have a 32 truck shell with 37 pontiac bullet headlights

This drawing was done from an old early 50's photo taken somewhere in California. Looks like they could ford a steam or two with no problem.

I run a stock 32 axle on a flattened reverse eye spring and a home made flattish model a style crossmember. I have 5.50:16's on the front and 7.50:16's on the back.
This is on Old Rusty my 31A on 32 rails and I think it looks ok.

There is no cooler roadster than the Doane Spencer car, and it doesn't have a dropped axle.

But the Spencer roadster is Z'ed, so there is a comparable drop.

My car is lower all around than you are building but right now I think it sets a bit nose high and looks fine. Hard to tell from three feet away in a cramped basement though. I'll know for sure how jacked it is when I roll it outside. [IMG]

I think I know what you're getting at and I bet it could look cool as long as it's not too exagerated. As far as the rake/or lack of rake goes I picture that light yellow Barris Deuce with the wierd intake.

I prefer the 40s - 50s look myself, and those rods weren't generally very low.

However, Choprods, note that Tommy's roadster DOES have a deep drop front axle. I think that contributes quite a bit to the perfect stance.

During your mock-up stage, it's not too difficult to see whether a stock axle will look OK to you. If not, you know tochange it out.

I just Titus drop a heavy '32 for me and it came out GREAT. I will post a picture soon. Completely traditional and should give an awesome stance.

Oh, and for the record, I think a fenderless hot rod that sat lower in the back would look TERRIBLE, with the exception of a 60s gasser rod, which is not what you are building.

I'm not a big fan of the "belly-dragger" look myself.

  22. Yeah I noticed the dropped axle on Tommys car- it looks great altho its higher than a lot by nowadays standards. Mart that looks Killer to me-Mine[31] will runa 409 chevy engine.I will take a pic of the 29 today and post it tonite-its up on 4 wheels with no engine at present- the 31 is sitting in a pile on the floor so that to come.....If it has to be called a Gasser-thats fine I want to depart from what I thiunk is overdone....the stage 1-2-3-4-5chassis you can buy that sits as someone selling it says is cool.I am far from a stranger to low CARS-so it IS a departure for me to be going there.
I just think it wont hurt to try it and either make an impression on a FEW [or] after the laughing quiets down,SLIDE AWAY QUIETLY-and rejoin the brainwashed masses.....! [IMG]

My axle is an old dropped one from the day. The cross member is original 32. I got a nose bleed until I reversed the main leaf and mounted the 5-50 stones. [IMG]

Sorry. That is not the pic I was after...

  27. Chop,
I got a saying, anyone can be cool in a Boydster, but you gotta be cool to be cool in a junkyard dawg.
Of course I'm not as radical as the rest of these guys. [IMG]
Build it and let it get some cool from you bro. If having a belly button made you cool then we'd all be James Dean, right?
Well bad example I guess he was so cool it killed him.
I don't have any pics handy but it seems to me that not everything was chopped n channeled back in the day. Back in the 30s n 40s there were a lot of 'em that set up pretty good.
I personally like scrapers, but you aint gotta make me happy. Right?
Of course that's just my own opinion, and it may stink. [IMG]
