There are those who hoard and do nothing with it and never will. They would rather it sit and rot away before they sell it to someone who needs it and can use it.To me thats Total BS! Hoarders are usually pricks too.." Look what I have and you dont" mentality.Just my two pesos...

It's not hording, it's called having inventory. I have my collection, Usually I buy engines for cores, and they end up being tore down the the bare block, the cranks hung up and the little stuff that can bite you during a late night build I save. I've given good core engines away, and I've been given good cores as well. In our hobby, if you don't give a little, you're not really part of the circle of life. I can't stand it when people refuse to sell anything, or they want a crazy amount of money for it. I've got some friends who refuse to sell anything, I wanted a set of heads that one friend had, the friend was given them, I offered 300 and I thought that was a fair price, but nope he is going to use them... ok but that was 10 years ago. Offered to buy them again a few weeks ago, and I got the same story. Their shop is crammed with future projects, non will ever see the light of the day. Oh well

If it weren't for hoarders, a lot of cool shit wouldn't exist today. Everything would have been used up and disposed of many, many years ago.

There would not be any old cars other than what are in museums and the few old diehards trying to put one million miles on a car.

The only difference between the guys who let them rot to the ground and the ones that save them for the next generation to rod is the location where the stuff is stored. ...but even most of the rusty stuff can be brought back to life if the right people get ahold of it.

Go hug a hoarder today. :)

I have met a guy who has more cool crap than he knows what to do with and never does anything with any of it! He gloats in the envy all of us have more than the vintage speed parts and cars that he owns. The guy is a total butt hole. He recites every nickel he has invested on every vintage speed part he owns, and has been "planning" the same build for years... I have also encountered the guy who wants a ton of money for a certain speed part yet constantly reminds you that he got it for next to nothing. These always seem to be the idiots who have all the cool stuff. WTF!

    Rant........

I had no wife for years. No house. No kids. Lived in my shop Just to have the money save history

I can't tell you the times I gave the seller his (real cheap) price as some fool set it back on the ground. I built a car around a Packard tach I found for $75

And everytime I see a tri-5 Chevy or shoebox rotting I smile ....there are millions

GET FUCKING OVER IT! BOO HOO SHIT just takes energy away you need to find something special!!!

AND there will always be special stuff out there. Saved by some guy that loves history figure out how to show him you care you'll own it. If not move on and get over it move on.

Yes we all die ....in my life I've seen a lot of paper boys get those cars.

keeping things just to say you have them and then letting them just rot away, thats just sad, i think lots of time people buy stuff and pay way to much and just can;t face to sell it for what it was really worth.

i watched that to. i was pissed that i live in the west. but i dont believe that our hobby would be as widespread without hoarders, or people that dont want to get rid of a car, till its to late.

In a way you gotta feel sorry for some of these guys. They have stashes of stuff, but many never finish a driving car, then they die and some friend of the widow or relative sells the stuff off barely understanding what it is or what it is worth. When I was a kid in the 50s, a guy in our little upstate NY town had two aircooled Franklins under some apple trees. Everyone tried to buy them but he was always "gonna do something with them". Eventually they naturally recycled, sinking into the ground year after year until they weren't any use even for parts.

I have a good friend, nice guy, very knowledgeable about cars and in his 60s, who has a indoor storage location packed full of all sorts of neat stuff. He continues to add to his stash, you can't call it a collection because you can't even walk in the storage area, nor see the floor, by going to swap meets and watchng local classifieds. However he has no plans to build anything, either race car or street car, and that is the part of what I don't understand. I guess the "pleasure" is in possessing rather than using the parts/cars. I have been in the storage area and there are a lot of neat high dollar parts in there. All you can say is "hope his kids appreciate and will use the stuff".

I had a pile of flathead parts, from our drag cars, but we moved upstate in retirement and I cleaned it all out and sold it at local swap meets and on the internet. Don't miss it at all. In fact now I have the fun of searching again for some parts for the new shoebox I have.

After cleaning out my grandmothers house after her passing away, holy shit I never want to be a horder. I came home that week and started getting rid of stuff. Still selling shit and throwing away, living a simple life is my new goal.

My brother was a hoarder. Not as severe as the pizza box and newspaper type but still a hoarder. He'd dumpster dive and hit every garage sale he could get to. Basically anything pre-1975 he would pick up. He would get old purses, handbags and briefcases and then sort stuff out and fill them. When we cleaned out his place I picked up one hand bag and it had about 200 nail clippers in it.

He was a guitar builder and repairman. Was well known in the area and had a pretty significant client list. His shop was a 2 car garage packed almost floor to ceiling with guitars, parts and old tube electronics. When he died suddenly he was three months behind on his rent and his utilities were about to be turned off. When we cleaned out his place we found, literally, about $1.37 in change. My dad and sisters had been supporting him financially for years. I pretty much gave him a car once. He drove it for about 2 years and then parked it when he couldn't pay the registration so he started storing stuff in it.

It took me 2 months of weekends to pack clear out his shop. I took the job of selling his stuff off to pay back the family and was just stunned at what some of it was worth. There were parts he had 10 of and just 1 brought in enough to pay his rent for a month.

So, at what point do you stop owning your stuff, and it starts owning you?

My local hoarder has a 34 three window, as well as at least 50 other pre 50's cars. I go by and visit with him on ocassion, because he is a good guy. I always ask him when he's gonna sell me the 34, and he always wheezes out a tired "I'm gonna fix her up someday"

I am a hoarder like all the rest of you, and I could give a fat rat's ass about what Dr. Phil says.

I'm pretty sure that is not even close to an accurate definition of socialism. Socialism means everybody shares the same, for better or worse, not somebody takes so somebody else can't have. That's a lot closer to capitalism than socialism. But despite the name error, you can still hate the concept.

Even if it does rant on its still a good subject and I enjoy reading y'alls opinions..We wouldn't have any of our hot rods and the occasional part we need to keep them going if somebody hadn't of hoarded it somewhere along the line. Hoarding is a good thing, its preserving our history..occasionally it gets sorted out, pizza box in the trash, five cent Coke bottle and grille shell over here in the keep pile..even the person that can't let go of anything eventually does..besides if I trade eleven cars for three thats progress right?

I don't think hoarders can significantly impact the hobby.

I have 2 pizza boxes by the trashcan that somehow I've missed for the last 4 weeks.
I have thousands of dollars in parts on shelves in the garage. For cars that I own.
I tell the wife when I die its all for sale for a dollar. BUT, ya gotta take it all.

    I have 14 Fiat gearboxes.

That seems a lot, but it isnt because I broke 6 gearboxes in that car in one month once.

    I have 5 Ford gearboxes.

That seems a lot, but it isnt because I have 14 Fiat gearboxes... :D

Hoarder? No, just a collector of parts for current and future projects. Hate to sell taillamps I could use at any time on a trailer or car project. Hate to sell front end asemblies whne a highboy project could appear at any time. Hate to sell steering box and column assemblies when a project is ...well, you get the message.
    But, hoarder...no.

To me, a hoarder is someone who doesn't know what they have, never intends on selling anything, and is actually damaging what they do have with neglect, improper storage, etc.

If someone has a LOT of stuff, but knows what they have, and takes care to make sure it's not being damaged, that's not a hoarder.

The hoarder forgets immediately about something as soon as they have it, 'cause they've moved on to acquiring the next thing.

By this definition, yes, hoarders are hurting.

Lately I've been thinking about going back to the local hoarder and talking to him again, maybe offering to assist him fixing up one of the car in exchange for the privilege of buying one, but to be honest I've got two many projects my self right now. I'll be happy if I can get my 52 running, while keeping my OT car racing this summer as of now it just like I spend all my time fixing the OT car so until I have the time space or money I'm not even going to bother him in terms of buying next time I'm down there though I'm going to see if he will let me take some picture cause he really does have some cool stuff.
