Usually a title like this will go downhill pretty fast, but the link you provided is as good a discussion as it gets.

Go read the link, ignore the title here.

Good article for the most part. I really like this quote from Mark Mortin:

“Traditional is something based on a precedent. The only general aesthetic for them was developed in the ’30s through the ’60s. It can’t change, because that’s what traditional hot rods are. Traditional transcends trend by a long shot. Traditional is anti-trend.”

Kevin Sledge is not a rat rod builder but a creative traditionalist. That car I know for a fact was built with patience and alot of research.

The term RAT ROD is for the pukes with billet shit and the $20000 paint. It helps them justify the dough they spent to have someone else build their car. Anyone were to call my T a rat to my face I better be on the lookout for a punch in the face. There is nothing on the car(except the tranny) that was built after 59. It is going to be a finished "traditional" hot rod. Don't let the magazine jerks put us all in the same category. If you want an unfinished unsafe POS that is your right, but don't let them treat all our cars the same just because it might be flatblack and not smothered in billet.

I like that car, and don't consider it a "rat rod" although apparently the owner does. Whatever...

The intentional rats are the most useless ones. A fiberglass body with a rusted chassis and fake "patina", that kind of defeats the purpose of building one up. I don't see a problem with works in progress, runners, "traditional" rods, whatever, but just throwing something together from some spare parts without proportion, aesthetics, or saftey. People don't read, look around, or think about what their doing, they just throw something together to cash in on a "fad", or atleast the mainstream "Rat". Which is what....an unaltered mini-truck chassis with a deepfreeze for a bed and a fenderless International Harvester cab? The idea is to build something decent with what you've got, its the way it was done in the "traditional" days, and its the way it always has been.

But really, its about whatever kind of taste you have.

    Top rod parts?

Those are necessities. That's what a hot rod is, just the necessities.
