Is it easy to remove chrome plating from finned aluminum..??

Anybody have experience trying to do such a thing..??

Not too big of a piece... but it is finned...

Would blasting it do the trick..??
Or should I let a chrome shop do the honors..??

Thanks for any stories, suggestions, or advice..!!!

I have no experience with plated aluminum. Usually what you'd do is take it to a plating shop and have them chemically remove the plating.

Lately I've been refinishing a pair of original Deuce bumpers, and by using a D/A sander I've managed to get them down to bare steel over almost their entire surfaces.

Maybe the answer to your question lies in what the parts are, how geometrically complex they are, and what you want to end up with.

Simple answer: take them to a good plating shop, and ask them to make sure they don't dissolve them.

You either put it into a solution of 50% sulphuric acid and feed it loads of amps or you soak it in 30% Nitric acid and it will eat it off.
    BUT,
and this is a big BUT!
If your part contains a lot of zinc, and is actually pot metal either process will eat it.
The only way I know of removing chrome from Zinc is to grind or sandblast, or both.
If it is aluminum and not too big, I can do it for you.
    As can any plating shop.
    If it is Zinc,
    I can't help you.

Don't try to grind chrome off of aluminum unless you've got good tools and you're good at it.
Getting it removed by a plating shop is cheap and easy.
It's the re-polishing that is demanding, but if you've got a d/a you're half way there.

  7. not positive it will work but try soaking it in warm water and lye (red devil ect) it is great to etch aluminum and remove anodizing, it might work on the plating
