Is it safe to drill Uni-Lug wheels wider?

Strange question for an O/T set of wheels for an O/T van, but I've got a set of old Turbine/Carrol Shelby Cyclone unilug wheels that fit up to a 5x4.75" Chevy pattern and I'd like to put them on a 5x5 Chevy pattern. Is there any danger in making the unilug pattern just a wee bit wider?
They are totally cheezy, I know, but they would make the van and they are already in my possession (FREE).
Thanks for putting up with this question. Who knows, maybe someday these wheel will be cool again. ;)

  2. No way if they are already at 4.50-4.75.

Professionally drilled wheels widened from 4.50 to 4.75 or vica versa is ok or 4.75 direct bolt pattern non unilug wheels to 5.0 is ok. but not 4.50 to 5.00

I don't see anything wrong here, but I would do it this way.

I'd mill the washer slot longer as needed, then mill the stud slot longer to the 5.00" center and then buy/make needed longer adapter washers so that they fit the longer slot and center over the moved stud slot like they did before at 4.75" center..

I think uni-lugs are this way? It's been years..

^ what he said will work, but... it will be pricey to get the 4 wheels all machined, plus them making new washers. Also look at both sides of the wheel to see if there is enough solid metal. Sometimes there are casted webs/valleys to save aluminum.

What about just having your drums and rotors re-drilled?

The things didn"t cost you nothing so go buy a set of adapters and do it right and safe.

You should provide a picture of the back side of the rim. I've seen some that I wouldn't want to do it but others have enough meat to work fine if you know someone with a mill and a rotary table. JMO

  9. It's probably not safe, but I had a OT van with similar sounding wheels. Some one just took a die grinder to them. No problem, but I'm sure it's not recommended.

My ET Unilugs are 4.5 ,4.75, and 5 slots the washers work for 4.5 or 5(end hole) only or 4.75(center hole} only, but they are factory made this way

Why not drill the five-inch pattern out of phase with the existing holes? You might have to run a cover over the extra holes, but lots of modern wheels have more than one bolt pattern.

This was something I was considering.

I've had them for sale for a while, but like Ansens were just a short time ago, I can't give them away. I'd rather drill them and use them than sell them for pocket change or store them any longer.

I will take a look at the back side when I get home to see what the scoop is. Thanks guys.
