Is it Will-is or Will-ies??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by mountaineerman, Aug 20, 2010.

  1. Those who do not have a degree in English should not comment on grammar. Proper names, often, are pronounced with little regard to, what is considered, proper grammar. My grandfathers name was "Smyth". In England, where his ancestors lived, it was pronounced "Smith". Another poster has already commented on word such as "mystery". By your, flawed, logic, it should be, "micetery".
Just because you have one doesn't make you an expert in linguistics or grammar. Case in point, all men(I hope) have a certain gland in their body. Most, it seems, call it their "prostrate gland."

    Badgez28,
Thank you for the clarification. I had no doubt after both big john mazmanian and barbara hamilton told me how to pronounce it that that was the way i would continue to say it. I didn't think there was any need for the comment that came back after posting about big john even if it was lol.

I've always pronounced it like will-eez, even though I know it isnt correct.............Why? Because the correct way sounds stupid.

  8. I never posted any Y's in the middle of words, only at the end as in the middle there are many like crypt, cyst, mystery. But wait...... Mystery has a "Y" on the end and is pronounced EEEE.
Oh and where is your degree?
I think that where you live is where you pick up the pronunciation as I said before.
I don't think theres a right of wrong. Since I have never heard it called a Willis and always called a Willeez I will stay with Eez.

Is this an actual sentence? I don't understand your point or what it is you're trying to say
Mystery has a "Y" on the end and is pronounced EEEE.
    So what?
I think you and the "Willeze" proponents are missing the point. The man and his family pronounced it "Willis". Grammar, spelling, pronunciation rules and everything that we learned in school have nothing to do with how a family pronounces their name. If they say it's to be said in a certain way, then that's that. Period. Change it if you must, but it doesn't make it correct.

    what a terrible discussion.

call it what you wish, but historians and many old-timers will tell you the proper and correct pronunciation is "will-is".

say it how you like, but why the drama?

I called my "will-is" Willy, but I know the correct pronunication. It is a matter of personal choice, but please don't be mean about it.

I think this thread should closed

World wide the name Willys is pronounced "willeez". However the man, John North Willys pronounced his family name "willis".
In 1908, John North Willys bought the Overland Automotive Division of Standard Wheel Company. Overland is also a family name and pronounced "overlund". Overland is the company that built a car known as the "Whippet".
In 1912, John Willys renamed his company Willys Overland Company (pronounced "willis overlund") From 1912 to 1918, "Willys Overland" was the 2nd largest producer of automobiles in the United States after "Ford Motor Company".
Universally, this beloved brand will for ever and always, without a doubt, be known as the Willys (pronounced "willeez") :) Is that enough of this? Lets put this one to bed, people...Robber

  15. It was put to bed over a year ago
Overland is not a family name. The man who began the company was named Cox
    Whippet, not Wippet

    Attached Files:

  19. Willys (correctly pronounced "Will-is", but almost universally as "Will-eez") ...

Take your pick. I prefer the almost universal version.

yeah, i know this is an old post.

they say john north willys pronounced it willis.

what i'd like to know is how jnw pronounced "billy's"?

if he pronounced it bil-luz or billis, i'd have to say his dialect got in the way of pronouncing his own name correctly.

it will always be will-eze to me.

    good one, Don!

  24. Silent Rick:
I've had at least one since 1960, but alas, he did pronounce his name Willis (the old timers in 1960 called them that)...but I can't ever get used to saying it that way either.
Here in my area we got a fish called a Pike (Walleye or Northern), but put it along side of a famous shoe (Nike)...is it a pike-ee,or a pike.
Any way, I am glad John North (what ever he called himself) had that cute little car designed and built.
g-willys (call me what you will)

  25. I'm gonna side with Silent Rick...................logic, ain't it?

  26. In this commercial, which I'm certain, was commissioned, approved and paid for
by Willys, the correct pronunciation is clear and without question.
On a similar note, and far more pervasive, is the mispronunciation of Toyota. Yup, we all pronounce it wrong. There's no toy in Toyota. The Japanese say, Toe-Yo-Ta. Ain't gonna change the world on this one, either.
