Technical Is Photobucket starting to wise up???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by evintho, Jan 31, 2018.

  1. Here is my dilemma. I am a apple user since I am not much of a computer guy. Plug in the phone and it automatically puts my music and photos into my computer. My question is how do you keep your stuff so no one can take it. I am very uneasy about the cloud. My other question is what does a professional photographer do store all their photos?

External hard drive. They sell them at walmart. If there's a USB connector on your computer, you can just plug it in.

    Hey HRR,
Most people with Apple phones, laptops, Ipads and computers have a link to the Apple "Cloud." Apple gives you so much free space, but when you are full on the free space, there is a monthly charge to store stuff in their "ICloud." A small family with a preteen usually will fill up the free Icloud fast, necessitating a charge monthly from Apple. Start paying monthly or go out and do what Squirrel and others have said about buying, not just one external hard drive, but at least two for backups.

Even if you get the two, 2 TB models, it definitely will not fill up with photos. Unless, of course, you are an internet scrounger and just download tons of high quality photos from various websites. Also, if you make high quality movies in any length. For me, I do not save any photos unless I have taken them. The internet photos are always online somewhere.

Plus, we all hate slow computers. If your built in hard drive is loaded up over 1/2 way with all of these junk photos of any quality, then there is your culprit.

    Jnaki
We also are multiple external hard drive users. Backups do not take that long and it is safe/secure and no one has access to it if it is disconnected and stored away like in a bank safe deposit box.

Getting photos is a snap and posting them on the HAMB is simple. just make sure all photos are saved as a JPEG image. Practice resizing them to fit a pretend HAMB page for quality. Nothing is worse than a non focused photo or one that is too large for the allotted screen size.

OK HAMB folks (you too @Ryan) as you can see, I've been screwed by Photobucket. All my build pics are being held for ransom for $400 annually. I'm not going to pay that once, much less every year.

This thread along with all the linked threads on the first page had literally hundreds of detailed photos of everything I did to build my car over the last 10 plus years. To top it off, Miss Vicky is featured in the current issue of The Rodder's Journal and the article actually directs readers to this thread on the HAMB for more build info and specifics. Superb timing.

So this brings me to my question for you – is there still enough interest in this build thread for me to go to the painstaking task of locating and reposting a ton of images that my friends at Photobucket have kidnapped?

Please weigh in if you care – one way or the other.

    Explanation:
    Hey D-Russ,
Nice video and magazine notoriety. On to the point at hand: Don't you have all of your photos/movies on your home computer? If the photos and movies are taking up a lot of computer space, then put them all on an external hard drive. 3tb ($100+ amazon) will take you a long time to fill up with only photos and movies. In an emergency, you can grab that little hard drive and run... nothing else, except for your family and dog, if you have one.

With all of the photos and movies that I take (family cars, soccer, ballet movies and photos,) the original 1TB hard drive filled up in three years. But, that also included personal files and other computer folders. If I had it only for photos, movies, I would still be using that 1TB hard drive.

I like the idea that I have instant access for all of my photos. My son goes one further and has all photos sent to the cloud account, but again, he pays monthly and is at the whim of the company, like you and Photobucket.

Recently, there was a fire creeping up a hill behind our house. We could see the flames that the fire department was starting as a back fire... We had our evacuation hard drives ready in a bag and a change of clothes. Everything else is expendable on an emergency. All photos, scrapbooks, important family stuff is all on the EXTERNAL hard drives as a back up bi weekly. We (wife, granddaughter, dog and two cars) were ready for the evacuation that never came.

I view that HAMB at work on my lunch break but photo sharing sites are blocked, so I can only see ones uploaded to HAMB directly.

Part of my problem is that I have a Mac, and an android phone, AND no home internet. So all I have is my phone for internet, and hooking it to the Mac doesn't work for downloading because I needed something....it's been so long I don't remember what it was exactly....so I stick my pics "in the clouds" from my phone and hope for the best.

So, ClayMart, you're saying that because you (and many others) are too lazy to upload your photos directly to this site we now have probably hundreds of wonderful threads with photos posted offsite that are no longer useful to anyone because the pictures are no longer available for whatever reason.

Another forum that I used to frequent is Shop Floor Talk, they will not allow photos that are not uploaded directly to them. They had too many problems with missing photos so they made the ruling that all photos be loaded directly from the user to their site. Now it makes no difference how old the thread is, they always have the pictures of what was done.

It would be a simple enough change for Ryan to make and this fine site would also always have the photos available. I can think of nothing on the internet more annoying than to find an extremely interesting thread right here on the HAMB with no photos available.

  8. I am not a professional photographer but I do take a lot of pictures. The good news is that I also have a MAC. Your computer probably came with software called iPhoto or Photos. The icon will look like he one in my attached picture (please excuse my pixels). Double click on the icon and it should open. There should be instructions as to what to do next. Your local MAC dealer should be glad to help you get started. I think that it is the best place to store and manage your photos. It probably is already on your computer and may be where your photos go when you load them. I load all of my photos from my iPhone, my DSLR photos, scans of old photographs, my wife and daughter’s photos into the program called Photos on my computer. I have my computer backed up using a hard drive and software called “Time Machine” which backs up any new data in my computer every three hours. Talk with your local MAC dealer. I also plan to get cloud backup in case the first two fail (please don’t tell me that I am paranoid). The cloud back up is not just for photos but also for everything on my computer. It all depends on how valuable to you your photos are.

A professional photographer probably has his own hard drives; they are getting cheaper all the time.

Play with it for a while and then PM me and I will give you a couple of time saving hints.

Remember to edit your photos deleting the duplicates and bad ones. Reducing the number of photos will help keep things organized.

  9. I have that part down. My complaint is that apple had that last big update and all my photos were set up in files that did not go by date but by car show or project. Now they are all over the place and my music is all over the place now as well. I had well over 10000 photos and music and both the photo program and the music show less than half that unless you go into the drives and try to find it by file name. I am now faced with resetting up all the files I had which will take days todo so. Here is a example that I can give. My current project is my 5 window coupe. It was labeled as the car name and all photos were chronologically set up as to how the project started. Now its all over the place. As posted above I am not a fan of the cloud as once you put your date in there now apple has it too. The music is the same way. Most of music is from artiest you would never see on I tunes so again upload into the cloud and then they have it too. Music is going the way of not owning it but renting it for you life time but apple can take it away anytime they want. I wish there was like a digital juke box that once I buy it or create it, its mine for ever and no company or entity can take it or restrict it.

An external hard drive (backed up with another external hard drive, and replaced every several years by a couple new external hard drives).

Apple is not into letting you do what you want, they are firmly in control. I tend to only use their products if they are really old, and I have figured out a way to control what they do.

  11. Really you're going to call guys out for being lazy because they may want to share the info on more than one site and don't want to spend the time, which for a tech or build thread could be an hour or more to create, redoing it on every site they participate in. Maybe it would be better if they just didn't share the information at all problem solved no pictures to disappear.

I have an old ipod , from 2006 I think, that I use all the time. I run an old version of itunes on an old computer, to put music on it.

I also have a modern android phone that I have loaded a bunch of music to, and I can use it's music player to listen to whatever I put on it.

The music I have is mostly from CDs and records I own, and have recorded in mp3 format. I store it on my computers' hard drives, and it's backed up on a couple external hard drives.

My photos are also stored on the computer and external drives. I recently uploaded almost all of them to google photos (over my project fi phone, so the storage doesn't cost anything) so there is another back up. But I don't have them organized very well, they are all saved in folders by year and month. I really should label them all, or at least the ones that are interesting.

    Hey HRD,
K13 is correct, any Samsung Android phone takes Micro SD cards that doubles and triples your storage capacity on your phone. They are simple to use and with the advent of photos and videos being recorded, this is a great way to store without slowing your device or phone down. Since Squirrel has mentioned external hard drives above, files from this Micro SD card can easily be transferred to your home computer or other devices. No need for Photobucket or any cloud stuff, you have your own private secure file transfer storage facility right in your phone or home computers.

I have always used Android phones and the last three were/are Samsung phones that have been trouble free for years. All of them have/had SD cards and can hook up to any car radio via Bluetooth or wired directly into what ever port you have available. One of our car stereo players has Bluetooth and an RCA port. So, we use the direct wiring to that port for the best results. A third generation Apple Ipod has both and works well in cars wirelessly or directly wired.

    Jnaki
I also have a first and second gen Apple Ipod player and they do not have Bluetooth capabilities. But, it still pumps out those high quality recordings and mp3 sounds quite well through headphones or directly wired through the RCA port/wire. When that one goes out, finally, then I will get a new Ipod for all of my music stuff.

  15. I understand that business is business and if the "free" outweighs the "fees paid", adjustments have to be considered. But the way Photobucket went about it was tactless. I don't believe they realized the extent of the ill will they were creating. They probably thought "Okay, we will do this once and done: it'll blow over." But there are thousands of sites like the HAMB where people go and look at archived posts practically daily and seeing those digital insults marking images taken away, we are rubbed raw again and again. So we're reminded daily who's the villain in this continuing soap opera. Photobucket was well on it's way to becoming an icon the likes of Coca Cola, Disney, Kool Aid and Levis but they have totally lost any prestige they may have had.

So like the man says...... "Fredo, you're nothing to me now. You're not a brother, you're not a friend. I don't want to know you or what you do." Adios Photobucket.

Not positive but I don't think the $100 plans allow for 'hot linking' photos.

Jim, I am technologically deficient on such matters as PC's, storage etc. and I currently have two PC's that are holding A BUNCH of my THREE projects' photos hostage due to crashed hard drives, (I know), my wife tried to tell me twice, no make that three times to back them up.
My question is; is it possible to have someone bail them out?
I never bought a new PC and am tired of using this tablet, I don't know what or who here.

I don't know. I guess there are companies that will try to recover the data, but it depends on what actually happened with the computer. If the operating system got messed up, and you can't boot the computer, then the drive itself might still work, and it's possible to temporarily install the drive in another computer, and read the data from it. But if the drive is crashed to where it can't be read at all, then it's pretty much gone.

You could bring it to a computer place, and let them see what they can do. Set a spending limit ahead of time.

I have no idea how you are loading photos, but it takes me 10 seconds or less each. A couple minutes to load a dozen photos is not a big hardship in my estimation.

Composing and typing text uses up far more time than photos. That has nothing to do with photobucket. Also, in the last couple years if you're not subscribed, photobucket has gone from loading in so many pop up ads that you can barely get to the pictures to not allowing you in at all.

There's no way I'm paying £100 for them to host my pics, I now load all the pics i want to share on here on Ryans servers (sorry Ryan) and the other site I used to update doesn't get updated, simple. There are other 'free' hosting sites, but if PB have done this, how long until they do....

  23. You are clearly not getting it. If I make an entire build or tech thread and want to share it somewhere else and I post the pictures directly here I have to repost the pictures and format the build thread on every site I want to post it on. If I have say 30 pictures in that thread it is a lot of work doing that over and over again. If I host the pictures externally I can copy and paste the entire thread with pictures to any site I want in seconds. Car show picture threads are another example where you could have 50-60 pictures to post if one wanted to share over multiple sites it would take a long time to post all the pictures you might have taken on every site you wanted to share them on.

And by the way I do post all my update pictures here on my threads now because it is only a couple at a time so it's not a big deal to do it at each site but I wouldn't have bothered even starting the threads if I had had to do it that way from the start when I had lots of pictures to post.

You clearly don't get it. A photo heavy thread is useless without photos.
My opinion won't change, apparently yours won't either.

  25. Clearly NO ONE expected what happened was going to happen and at this point all the other imagine hosting sites have been shown what happens when you try to pull what Photobucket did.

  26. Ron,

I went through Apples last big update (iPhoto to Photos) without any problems. I wonder if you are doing something out of the ordinary that caused you a problem? I sort my photos using Albums (try the help menu if you don't understand what I am talking about). I just open a new album and drag whatever photo I want into it. You can move the photos around in the album by dragging them. I end up with a separate album for each topic I want to see separate. The files are still in the main library sorted by date. If I delete a file from the album it remains in the library. The same photo can be included in more than one album. Are you using iPhoto, Photos or what?

I'm surprised imageshack hasn't been mentioned here. Three bucks a month and I can store and download all the photos I want.

  30. I have started that in rebuilding all my albums that I had originally. What makes me so mad is I had all my albums the way I wanted them, and after the update they were all gone and the system did everything by date. Now they are all jumbled all over the place. The music is another anger point. After taking weeks to upload all my CD's well over 1000 and can't find half my music. I was a dummy and sold my entire collection after uploading. Some of which I can never replace so I do not have the physical CD's for back ups.
