So friday night I was trying to put together a junk yard tool box, I had a old craftsman 1/2 inch ratchet set that my grandfather gave to me. Now before you guys start jumping me for wanting to use this set as a junkyard set let me say this socket set HAD seen better days, in fact ( I think thats why he gave them to me.) They were covered in suface rust, there was absoulutely NO shine to them at all. I don't have a antique tool guide but I guessing at least fifty years old. Well I took them over to the buffer "just to clean them up a little." And this is the result... the ratchet has been fully polished to Snap-on quality and I rebuilt it, now the ratchet has a great feel to it.
I don't think this is going in my junkyard box any more.... [IMG]

Polishing starts out as a bad habit.Just like smoking.
The best way is not to start. [IMG]

I wouldn't hesitate to use them in a Junkyard. Why not?
Your Grandfather bought them so he could use them, then gave them to you so you could use them.
Just don't loan them to Dumb Asses who are too Fucking cheap to buy their own.

You're not addicted yet, but you ARE on the fast track to hell!
I have been finishing off the Corvette suspension polishing that you saw a part of at geemann's last month. This weekend I got it all ZoopSealed and ready to assemble. This polishin' shit can get outta hand real quick...but it looks so cool when it all comes together! [IMG]

Charlie you haven't seen my sporty yet, its got more polished aluminum than chrome. Unk, I think the main danger of a junkyard box is loss, as in your hot, tired and you leave a damn socket somewhere, I mean how many tools have you found at the pic-n-pull?
    The process I used is just this;
    1) 3M deburring wheel, 7s good for first step polishing for alluminum and steel, I mean it when I say its the most used tool in my shop.
    2) tight sewn muslin and black compound
    3) go back to step one again and get the spots you missed.
    4) black again
    5) tight sewn muslin and red compound
    6) go to black again and get the spots you missed
    7) red again, at this point its so pretty you think your done, butcha not
    8) hit it with some white on a loose sewn flannel.
    9) whistle and go gosh that sure is purtty [IMG]
one important thing to remember, do not mix your compounds on your wheels unless you go to a harder compound, but you can not go back, its best to have a wheel for each.

I would hesitate to take Snap-On tools to a wreckers.

If I'm hot and tired, and some cheap wrench slips,it's staying there.

No it doesn't dull the finish, in fact it deepens the look of the polished metal. I bought my kit directly from Zoop Seal off their website...

Mccalister has them, I originaly got them from J&S tool supply. I would imagine any company that sells grinding and or abrasives supply would have it, I have yet to find them in a store I can just go to around the LA area yet.

    Is it an addiction?
When you polish the tranny and bellhousing and decide to plasma spray 70 lbs of brass on the frame and polish it instead of paint! The outside of these framerails looked like the inside before we started polishing. I'm happy to say tho, that after you go all out once, you burn out and get back to semi normal. The most polished part on my next one will be the ass of my pants from wearing on the seat.

If Zoop Seaal doesn't dull the finish, then your finish is dull!!
If it enhances your finish then it's very dull!!!
    It's O.K. for boaters

You can do the same job if you put the pieces into a bath of sodium bicarb and belt them with a few amps from a heavy battery charger.
Parts hooked to negatve and an anode of stainless, your in business. Use a plastic bath though.
Buffing will often remove the chrome, leaving just the nickel, you'll know if they start going goldish.
Having said that decent old hex chrome will take it pretty well, but using a bath will do less damage.
They don't use so much of the hex chrome any more.
On modern chrome I recommend you don't buff at all.
    But polishing is very addictive.
Check out the hoses on your watersystem, aren't they stainless?
Then there's your generator, carbs, inlet header.
    Wanna Custom Battery box?
    You'll understand before too long.
You just asked the question too late.
