A 500 dollar estimate is just as unrealistic as a 10,000 dollar estimate to me ***uming we are talking about the realistic average "market value". The true value is somewhere in between. Even with the internet, the value in Los Angeles will be different than in small town Iowa. The net has narrowed price differences but shipping or the price of a road trip with a trailer has to be factored in. I never respond with prices on these posts because I don't believe that an old car can be valued by a 3/4 shot from 20 feet by anyone! I never buy a car just to flip for a profit or just to part out. The real market is determined by what a buyer will pay for it today which we all know might be very different from 2 years ago. I'm always surprised by the prices that get thrown around here. Often they are way high IMO but I'm not actively pricing them so I just shake my head and think I am glad that I am not looking to buy. I've always said that there are asking prices and there are selling prices. Rarely are they the same. If you really want the car to drive, figure out what it is worth to you and how much you will need to spend to get it there. If you are interested in it as a profit maker, be careful. I'm thinking the pool of potential buyers for cars in this realistic price range might have shrunk recently. It looks like a very nice car but it is still a builder. Just my thoughts.
Best advice yet. Although if you take it, it'll make ya a chronic lowballer I think that car would do very well in Iowa. We have rust here, and it's probably worth more in my front yard with a for-sale sign than thoroughly advertised anywhere in oklahoma.
won't be able to see the car till monday, talked to owner today, promises me no rust in floors, no holes, trunk and floor pans solid... will keep you guys posted , also told me he had a shed full of parts to go with it another grill, multiple spare fenders, new trunk latches etc....may become a sleeper after all....thanks for all the comments!
It looks like a nice solid car. But for reference, there was a '40 ford tudor sedan on c'list that looked as solid (maybe not quite as complete, minus eng and trans...) in St. Louis for $3k - didn't sell, lowered to $2800, don't know if it sold or not, but its gone from list. Also a pretty solid 39 plymouth 2 dr for $1500. I'd say you would not go wrong at $1500 or less, but like others have said, how much is it worth to you as a driver and how much $ to get it there.
Thanks for the info.... putting numbers on the pad ! If I can save the ole lady for a fair price she may be worth it, after all she is 71 yrs old.....I hate to see her end up s****ed!
Heres the BIG question,,how much can you afford to spend on it ? and if its buy it or it gets s****ped then pay s**** price
I'm thinking you're taking a liking to her? I'll definately let you know how I come out on Monday! If I could get her running it would make her alot more attractive....
I agree. I'd like to know where some of you guys are finding nice complete 1930's cars for $500. A couple for reference. A friend of mine is restoring a '36 Plymouth 4 door sedan. He recently bought another one to use for parts. He didn't need anything major, the parts car had a better grille and some small stuff he needed. He swapped his other grille onto it, took off the misc. pieces he needed and resold it. He paid $1500 for that and got his $1500 back when he sold it. It was in decent shape, not quite as nice as the one pictured but not far off. A few years ago I bought this '40 Chrysler, I paid $1650 for it. The running boards were shot and it had floorpan rust, but it ran and drove and the bumpers were rechromed. It's painted now, but here's a couple pics when I bought it. Based on what I paid for my Chrysler and what my friend paid for his '36, I'd say this car is in the $2K range, give or take $500 if it has a ***le, solid floors, the engine turns, it's complete, ect.
Mukunda is a hindi (hindu) variation of "lord krishna," meaning "freedom giver." The owner of the car (or a past owner) must have been a devotee.
Well, I think 37 was a great year for most American auto makers as far as styling goes, but that's just my personal opinion. I love the stamped fenders on the Plymouths. Super cool!
4-doors are KOOL!! I've got a 1940 Ford...like to make it a Highboy? has anyone ever seen one? If so, post some photos.. Suicide Doors are the MAX! Murph
UPDATE......After viewing the car.... Seller now thinks it's worth 3500.,, Think I'll be backing out on this one! Thanks for all the input guys!
Considering the look of the car and the fact that all of the parts are there plus it looks to be pretty solid, I would offer $2500 and negotiate from there. I don't think I would go to $3500 unless there was really a good reason to do so. You can still get pretty decent 2 doors for $5k -$7K. Mor-door or not, the car looks pretty damn good with a lot of potential for just a few bucks.
I had one that I drove almost everyday for a year in the 80's through snow and all. They are great cars stock or hotrodded. If you can, buy it fix it up and drive it.The parts were cheap to keep it running too.Good Luck
