Is the hamb responsible for $500 heavy axles?!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by D.SCOTT, Nov 19, 2010.

  1. They haven't made them for 78 years. I've got a 32 truck grille that I want a good penny out of but it isn't mangled up and they are hard to get. I wouldn't take a penny less than $600 for it a passenger grille in its shape would be a $1000 probably. Hell the pickup grilles are more rare than the passenger car grilles. They made way more cars than trucks.

What would you be selling a heavy axle or a 32 pickup grille for? $600 and $800?

another reason for the high prices of old cars at auction could be that they are about the only investment that hasent gone in the toilet!! anyone checked out the intrest rate for a CD at the bank lately???????

When you say HEAVY do you mean the 1932 Truck axle? Or were some of the sedans optioned with a heavy duty version? I have what I was told was a 1932 truck axle. How would I tell the difference? I'm not looking to sell it, I was given it by a good friend. Gonna stay in the shop until it goes under a car. Keith

I was told (by somebody I almost trust) that is is a 1932 heavy axle. the dimensions that I have are : Spring Perch to Spring Perch is 36" King Pin to King Pin is 48" and Wheel Mounting Surface to Wheel Mounting Surface is 57 3/4" it has non/juice brakes on the hubs and still has the un-split wishbone on it.

Not the best pic but the only one I can post right now. If anybody needs a close ip of a certain part to ID this let me know and I will take it when I get home. Keith

  6. Yep, It is a heavy axle, Be very careful when separating the bones from the axle. The perch pins are very hard to find and costly to replace.

Ok thanks for the heads up. Now for the hard question, what does heavy mean? Truck? Heavy duty option? How does this differ from a standard (non-heavy) axle? Keith

  8. STD 32 ford issue axle, car and light truck. Called heavy because of the larger beam size than the normal 32-36 front beam axle. Easiest identifier, look where bone meets the axle. the heavy will have a receased pocket machined to accept the wishbone, while the std axle will have a raised boss to accept the wishbone. This, ---___---, NOT this ____----____. In the picture below note 2 axle the upper is 32-36, the lower is 32 heavy. Notice the heavier (THICKER) beam, also the machine pocket.

Got it. I just went out into the frozen tundra that is my shop (about 12* F outside) and took a look and yep it has that machined spot. Now I know what I have. Still no idea what I'm gonna do with it. Looks like I have to rebuild it now. Mayby fill and drill it, then hang it on the wall until I get a proper hot rod body to sling it under. Thanks everybody. Now back to topic. Sorry for the minor derailment. Keith

there's a shop here that deals in restoration parts (the flathead years) rows of speedos, and other trinkets, flatheads, navaro heads sitting on one mill- lots of stuff NOT for sale, lol. but i was there looking for axle spindle stuff and there's shelves of ford axles 50/pop, Anglia axle (DAMN they're TINY), and on the top shelf was a 32 heavy for 200. spindles and backing plates but no serviceable drums lately...

  13. I guess some people get it and others do not. That is not a 32 Ford heavy axle. It is Super Bell's sad excuse to ride the wave of demand for an original 32 Ford part. There is very little resemblance of the reproduction axle to the real thing other than a name someone in marketing attached to their product!

I am the thinking that the individuals that buy these axles are the 1-800- credit card builders. Yes, this axle has its market, the builder that doesn't want to take the time to source original parts, the builder that doesn't understand tradition, the builder that is afraid to buy a used part and re-purpose it for fear that it might need a little work, the guy that is building on a tight budget, etc. I get it, I really do, but go ahead and buy the aftermarket stuff, more of the real deal stuff for me to buy.

actually i ran those parts together incorrectly as i typed- they have a shelf with axles (one was the 32) AND then they have stacks of various spindles, and stacks of various backing plates, but dont have any serviceble drums-my apologies for the confusion....

Many guys DO NOT want their axles filled and drilled (I'm one of them), so if you have any inkling that you might want to sell this axle for a profit, you should hold off on those modifications.

Achemy, I dont think I could part with it for cash, it was given to me by my old boss's father, however being that he is an old horse trader, I'm sure if I SWAPPED it for needed parts all would be good. Keith
