Yeah, but Danny hasn't started a thread called
"What color would you paint your car in a parallel universe?"
    ... yet.

NO - 90's teal green, 00's dark orange metallic, color flip pearl.

thinking of adding dark charcoal grey metallic to the list - its almost black....but not... just seems like a guy cant quite commit to black paint. Thoughts?

I would paint a Jeep pink or purple - have 2 daughters.
I like 1960s pale yellow, not the 80s and up "nacho cheese" yellow.

  4. There’s at least 11 theoretical dimensions
And a theory of one that ages backwards.
I built my bus with hopes of traveling through a wormhole eventually, unfortunately no space craft have been scraped in our local yards.
I would have to paint any craft used for wormhole travel.
I’m ok with just about any color but that gm teal from the late 80s and early 90s would be a definite no.

@anthony myrick thank you. I'm in the "no 90s gm teal" club. If there's shirts. I'll buy one.

    Time travel bus.
Now I'm thinking of the opening scene in "buckaroo bonzai" and also "Hot tub time machine" (not a good movie, but funny) OOOO WEEE, the creative mind is on tilted roll today, let's see where it goes. o_O

No gray ever, that color just lays there. I like colors that scream "hey come over here and look at me" No gray car ever did that. Hot rods and customs (IMHO) are supposed to be flashy. also never ever any paint of any color that is not shiny

Couple colors I would never do,
    Yellow, Pink, Magenta, and Brown.

HRP, I agree, living next to a school can change your idea of colors real fast, Here if you have Orange your a UT fan, Burgundy is A&M, so I generally stay away from those two colors like the plague also.

  9. Not time travel. That’s different than inter dimensional movement
The first time I time traveled, I visited the Apallo for a James Brown concert. That’s when I realized sound travels a million times slower. No audio.
As far as colors. That depends on the vehicle. Some here don’t like browns or earth tones. These colors look great on low rider/tail dragger styled builds.
Yellow? I like the 2 tone yellow/white and yellow/black combos from the 50s.
Grey? I’m considering that for my 49 GMC. As mentioned that it just lays there is exactly what I want the truck to do when parked.
I’m painting an OT ride for myself bright green. Why? Because I let some students choose and I’m kinda strange anyway.
For the most part a color isn’t as important as good body work and prep.
No color looks good on crappy body/prep work

A 1962-63 version of our Impala by @themoose Thanks...

    Hello,

BLACK… I owned a black 58 Chevy from 1960 to 1965 and before that, I was the maintenance guy for my brother starting when he drove it home from the local Chevy dealer in downtown Long Beach. If I wanted to go to a friend’s house, basketball practice, or to the beach, I had to do maintenance on the black 58 Impala from the fall of 1957 to when I officially started driving it.

It was simple maintenance, wash, vacuum, tires, and bi-weekly wax with Vista Wax at first, then Cadillac Blue Coral next and finally, Classic Car Wax. It was the shiniest black 58 Impala in So Cal. But, I did not have to ride my bike or take the bus to go where I wanted to go in my off hours. By the time I put in my hours from 57 to 59, my brother allowed me to driver the Impala at Lion’s Dragstrip during a few timing runs and then several elimination races. That was the biggest plus of all time.

The wash/wax maintenance was down to the toothpick and toothbrush on the lettering, the chrome trim rings and around the extensive chrome accents on the Impala design. One advantage I looked forward to was to be able to drive down the street to the power wash place, when my brother got the bottom caked with sand, dirt or mud. Then I had to power wash it and return for the maintenance on the black paint. But, I was able to drive the Impala by my self during those times. No license at the time, but I was very careful.

By the time I was a licensed driver, we had our Willys Coupe accident and my brother was in recovery for over a year. During this time, I was still the maintenance guy as my brother could not do anything. So, officially, the Impala was my main transportation. In the beginning when he came home from the hospital, I drove him everywhere he needed to go, doctor’s office, medical burn center, cruise the cliffside roads in San Pedro/Palos Verdes and even down the Orange County coastline to his favorite surf spots.

When my wife and I got married, we did not want or have a black car for the first 25 years due to the extreme maintenance of black painted cars. We were too busy getting along with the new world, together. Old or new. Red was the primary color of most of our daily drivers. (except for that funky 1962 Silver Blue Corvair)
    upload_2022-10-27_4-6-6.png
Despite the large panels on our 327 powered 1940 Sedan Delivery, Red stayed relatively clean in all sorts of So Cal weather, even being on the beach salt air environment. Red hides dirt well, but as always, road grime, weather and just stuff blowing across the highways does a number on any paint.

But, put Black on the top of the list for the easiest color to get tarnished, dusty and dirty in normal days and definitely foul weather days. Despite the best wax job with Collinite Wax that has proven itself in day/night salt air conditions. YRMV

Then, she got the wild hair about driving around in a Black sporty coupe. So, she bought one, then I bought a Black small car to compensate for her choice. Now, I was spending “my time” in the garage cleaning and detailing two Black cars. When I was finished, it was wonderful, but several days later, they were already not clean. When it rained or we had to drive in foggy mists, the cars were now in need of cleaning. Black is not the car to own if daily maintenance is necessary.

So, finally we decided to get the color that stays the cleanest for weeks. My wife chose a Pearl Metallic White and that stays clean for weeks, even during the rainy season in So Cal. Now, we have also selected a Silver/Grey color for our other daily driver and that rivals the Pearl Metallic color for cleanliness for weeks. We have owned the two cars for 11 and 15 years, so our maintenance is much less than during our Black car days. Yes!!!

Car maintenance is built in to our psyche, but the older we get, the less maintenance or hassles we want, so we can just live a nice relaxing lifestyle.

Black! 1. body has to be super straight (though not usually a problem). 2. Too much work to keep clean. 3. BORING. 4. No one notices it, people walk right by back cars. 5. Only clean freaks, and bodymen/painters appreciate black cars.
Plain White is a close second. Don't count Pearl versions.

    Flat Black

Sadly every flatblack or satin hotrod is now known as a rat rod.

At one time I seriously wanted to build a ‘32 with full fenders and paint it satin black. It would have perfect body work and real automotive paint with flat clear. It would have nice chrome and nice interior and be reliable and comfortable to drive. Unfortunately no one could understand my vision for a nice car that wasn’t shiny and insisted on asking how my rat rod project was coming along.

I pulled the plug on that and went on an entirely different and Non HAMB friendly direction.

    certain shades of red

anything bright or gaudy ‘ain’t for me , orange , peach purple etc .

    just too flashy .

I’m not a fan of blue either , but my merc is viper blue

hmmmm ? So what colours do I actually like o_O?

Any other color is fair game, including black, white & everything between 'em. :D
    Generally;
    • Period-correct cars look best in colors that were popular at the time.
    • Racy hot rods look best in bright "Hey look at me" colors.
    • Cool customs look best in more sophisticated luxury car colors.
    • There are *outstanding* exceptions to all these generalities.

Grey or silver. There are a couple of new gray shades out there now that remind me of shiny primer. I like to stick to factory colors for the year of vehicle you have also.

My choice not to use is yellow, but not just any yellow as I love the butternut yellow GM used on cars. The yellow I hate is that bright traffic yellow like you see on highway stripes, or vehicles. It might look good on some modern muscle car, or exotic, but I don't like it on older cars.
Oh, and pink or purple too!

I run towards black cars done right at shows, especially when parked near a tree. as a photographer they make great shots when you use a polarizing filter and adjust to get the reflections at their best. black and other dark shades in the right conditions make the best shots. look at Ed Tillrock's pencil drawings, his best ones are of dark cars. they look like black and white photos.

I have done a lot of bodywork but never painted a whole car. black would show me if I was good or just average.

  22. Talking about colors that show imperfections
silver and other light metallic colors will magnify any surface imperfection worse than dark solid colors.

Lots of silver hate! Lol. Mine is silver, kind of, kind of like a gunmetal silver/blue. Odd color, but gets positive attention everywhere it goes. And someone said they're everywhere. I don't go to a ton of events, but never seen another silver car around me...

This is obviously subjective, but for me, I hate orange cars. They all look like rolling pumpkins to me.

And while I second, third and forth black sucks to keep up, I do love black cars. Especially sports cars, or an old Lincoln or Cadillac.

I get the whole ‘look at me, look at me’ thing, and granted our cars generally don’t blend in, but I can’t do the Easter egg thing. For me it’s gotta be the more subtle colors and generally that means black……:cool::cool:.
Also (food for thought) - the people that look at cars based solely on the color aren’t the people I want lookin at my cars anyway. ;););)

  26. *Purple.
Psychologists will tell you that toddlers from 5 to 8 years old loves 'em some purple.
But by the time they attain some maturity, say 9 years old, they are sophisticated enough to kick anything purple to the curb.
I've noticed that 1950s two-tone paint jobs can often take a couple of colors that by themselves I wouldn't rate very highly but the combination used together can look pretty damn good. ....*..*..*.... Unless one of the colors is purple. That's never going to look good.
But if anyone out there who reads this actually likes purple...... well then...... Bless your heart.

*Warning: This comment contains subtle humor and is not meant to be directed at any particular person or vehicle. bla-bla purely coincidental bla-bla-bla

Black is great if the car is straight, and you can stand keeping it clean- harder when there's two...

I do my own body work. I need all the help I can get.
No metallic, and mostly no dark colors.
After that, the imperfections were intentionally left for the assholes to have something to pick apart.
