Can you wire up a remote solenoid, like Ford uses?

    Edit:

It'd still have to use the original solenoid

Thanks again everyone. Johnny Gee, Mr48, I appreciate you're knowledge there. It does give me a bit of peace of mind. At any rate I think I gotta ditch this particular starter motor as the solenoid does hang out a ways (close to an inch) from the side of the starter motor. I'd have to bend the pitman arm quite a lot to clear it, where as I can get one of those ones with the rotatable solenoid to at least fix one problem. If I still get too intimate with the pitman arm I may only need to bend it 1/4 of an inch to clear well enough :)

Jasper, something just came to mind. It was very clear up front from post one that your in Australia. What didn't register until know is this. We in the USA get away with a lot of things you guy's can not do Australia. Would modifying a pitman arm be considered a no no?

Potentially. But none of the schmos in authority would ever be able to tell that its been done. Particularly if its only by around 3/8ths of an inch, and done right. I'd just maintain ignorance of the fact. They make it an unneccesary bureaucratic headache when you mention any modifications on old cars. Best save everyone the anxiety. Mind you my cars mods have been comprehensively do***ented by an engineer.

Ok, I blasted through all the comments, we ran into the same problem with our 50 Chevy Ute (350/350/10 bolt - stock front suspension). Put it all together in the driveway, backed out and made the turn to go down the street, and thud, we ain't turning.
Pulled back into the drive way and like you, the steering arm hit.
Fix was easy, for a Yank, just bought the cheapest high torque starter from Pomona- $100.00. Clocked the solenoid to fit, one minute later installed and driving down the street

    "One minute later"
Sounds like a script from one of those cable tv car shows.

Hey all. Just FYI. I tried out a few mini starters. The only one that cleared was the power master starter. It cleared by a mile and cranks really well. Great little starter!! IMG_1544188539.196766.jpg
