Is there a way to get 'salvaged' off the title?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by no55mad, Jul 26, 2010.

  1. In my state of M***achusetts, after an exhaustive examination by the state police/ D.M.V people, and producing all the bills and paper work you will receive a ***le branded as PRIOR SALVAGE.
That stigma remains with the car forever and will show up on Car Fax and Auto Check.

  2. Of course, Carfax and Auto Check can't look up 1981 and earlier vehicles.... and if it's old enough, registering it in VT or NY eliminates the ***le entirely.

I'm not sure if no55mad is going to show back up to explain why he asked but it's really a moot question IMO.

If it's an old car nobody cares. If it's a newer car, there is no way to hide it any longer.

  4. You're right. there is no way to hide it on a newer car. brother bought a salvage ***le car in Arkansas. fixed it. he lives in Vermont. when he re-registered the car there, it came back with a clean ***le. flash forward 2 years. he goes to sell the car, and a carfax check shows the salvage ***le in it's history. In this computer age, there aren't many secrets left.

Here is an example of how "salvage" and "junk" ***led cars are LEGALLY defined, at least in the State of Oklahoma...

    http://www.tax.ok.gov/mvinsureloss.html

Most, if not all, states that require some form of ***le would have a nearly identical description. As described above, ANY 1981-newer car WILL have a salvage or junk description in the CARFAX if the insurance company totalled the car/truck.

Another thing is if you buy a car with a salvage ***le is that the lending ins***ution will lend far less on it, obviously. I've owned cars with salvage ***les and it has never been a big deal. One example is an '87 BMW 325i convertible. It had a salvage ***le because it was a theft recovery in 1993. I bought the car in 2002. The car was in great condition, and I got a great deal from the dealer friend I bought it from. A tornado destroyed the car in '03, so it became a parts car at that point, then crushed.

I have a real problem with people that want to hide the fact that a vehicle was involved in a flood, theft, salvage, or other incident (hail, accident). The way the OP asked the question - I have to wonder what his intentions are.

    1980 and earlier
. In 1981, the now-standard 17-digit VIN system was adopted worldwide.

My brother bought a corvette with a salave ***le, got it real cheap, when he went to sell it he could not get as much as other clean ***le vettes would bring for the same car he setteled for what he could get. But he looked real good in that salvaged ***le corvette for a few years looked like he had money to burn....

I was involved in the worst case senario with a SV. (In 1981)I bought a 77 Monte Carlo that was actually stolen by the woman's husband, and stripped to avoid her getting it during a divorce settlement. It was reported stolen and recovered. I bought it from the insurance company and found out the whole story after I contacted the husband about the history of the car since it had very few miles. He trusted me enough to tell me that he had the parts for it, which I also bought. After a re ***embly with the original parts...no painting necessary...That big SV turned a car that was still worth a bunch into a car that nobody trusted. And worth very little. I tried to get the SV off the ***le since every part was original. It couldnt be done then, but there may be other loopholes now. On the other hand, like mentioned above, history reports dont go away.

I bought a salaged ***led 91 Camaro Convertible, used it as my daily driver for 3 years. Again it looked like it had been stolen recovered. I ended up completely rebuilding it and finally did a direct trade for my Model A project.

    Traded this:-

Wife thought I was mad at the time. But this way I got a fair value on the car. I would buy another salvaged ***le vehicle with no problem once I have inspected it.
