Projects Is there any interest in rodding a 31 Pontiac coupe?

Thats a great find! Havent seen one of those in the flesh. Looks very much like a Model A, needs the A windshield shade. So i get to give my idees of your build. With such a well equipped original I would try and keep as many orig parts as possible, but the suspension is really ugly and it shows too much. A Ford straight axle or similar in front, and coils in back, [no independant] so you dont see all them springs hangin out. I,m not a choptop fan and a small cut isnt worth the effort. A 62 up chevy/pontiac straight 6 is plenty nice for dependablity and acceptable power, and plenty of transmission choices. just my 2 cents.

povertyflats, that car is way cool. I can appreciate the look and lines of that car because of my chevy. I think the full fendered poncho powered idea is pretty cool rool with it.

Here is a current thread of my '31 Chevy if you're interested.

I've been reading this thread and thought I would join in. I have owned a '31 Pontiac coupe for many years and just recently started the project. It's going slow but here's what I have so far. When we bought the '31 the wood was rotted and we also wanted a car we could drive. So... the project begins. I have been working on the frame, installing a Chassis Engineering "X", and boxed the frame rails. I installed a Ford transverse leaf and drilled I-beam front axle with Buick finned alum. drums. The rear is a narrowed 57 Pontiac with a 62 3:08 posi. The engine I am going to install is a 57 Olds J2. Plans also include a 3" chop. I am attaching some pics. Not sure if I want to go with wood or metal in the body. Any thoughts?

Sorry to be blunt, but you would be a complete 'tard if you did not build it. I am trying to get my feet wet with much less than is on that trailer.

Challenge yourself, you could be rewarded with something unique and enjoyable.

I would suggest a combination. 3/4" and 1" square tube for pillars/door perimiters/floor supports/belt-line rail backups, and wood for window frames/headers/roof bows. I find wood easier to attach upholstering/window felt channels to. There are a couple of threads going that have a lot more info on that.

  7. Oh man, that thing is too cool!! I'd throw a tri power 389/4spd in there, drop it and cruise. The lines on the Poncho are great stock, just throw a little paint on there

M.H.R.A (minnesota hotrod assc) just awarded street rod of year .Winner was 39 pontiac coupe.M.H.R.A is one of the largest clubs there is.Back to 50s etc.Im a pontiac man even tho my Rod is a ford with Pontiac engine ,and I think You have what a lot would like, some thing out of the main stream. That would be a looker ,either rodded or referbished.Never seen one of those completely redone.Congrats,

Search function at its finest: I know this is a very old thread. But what happened to this possible build?
