i built my 50 chev truck to drive daily if i wanted to. still working some minor kinks out, but have been venturing further and further away from home. can't wait to start driving it to work, which is about an hour each way.

Back in the day I built a 49 Studebaker truck drove it everyday for at least 4 years.
I have a coupe now and I drive it when I can. 3 to 4 mpg just not practical and thats the way I want to keep it.

Not 30s or 40s, but I drove my 51 lincoln as a daily from march through september of 07. No AC in the 115deg heat was a killer.

I had an old 53 Plymouth Cranbrook I used to drive daily about 4 years ago. Other than a botched 12 volt conversion (my first attempt, had a few burnt up wires) it worked fine. Car got awesome gas mileage, about 30 mpg. Drove it in the winter, wasn't much for snow though. Any break down was always do to some electrical malfunction, once my car started on fire when the brake pressure switch shorted out! One of the most retarded things about it was the fact I drove it with a couple of the plug wires reversed for two months. I never could figure out why it ran like ****, was almost considering dropping in a 318 V-8 until my dad took a quick look at it. Figured out the correct firing order and the thing ran like a top. Sold it a year later.

I later bought a 53 Packard for a daily driver but gave up on it when gas was crazy expensive at 4.25 a gallon. I now bought a 53 Willys Aero that I would like to use as a daily. Figure with that tiny six it should be good on gas.

I'll post one more of each truck but I don't want to hijack someone else's thread with multiple photos.
    PS....46 is for sale.

Been driving my Truck since 1995 and my Coupe since 2007 every day. (see signature links for more details and pics)
The truck gets driven when it rains or snows.
Never owned any other vehicle and will drive them as long as I live or it is not allowed any longer...

They are both all original with later and bigger straight 6 engines and 3.55 rear with radials.

I always wished I'd see more old cars as daily drivers.
    I don't get it....

Although my ute is a '62, the engine and running are very little changed since they started production in '48. Apart from mid '50's styling the only "modern" feature is electric wipers. I've been driving this car "interstate" to work and back six days a week for the last five years and diggin' it!

Coming from a guy that drives a 60's British sports car daily, you'll be FINE with a 20's-50's AMERICAN car lol. Between the '67 BGT and the Willys pickup, which is a '62 with original flathead six in it (they didn't change a bit since '49 so it's like driving a 40's truck)... my poor '95 F150 hadn't been driven in FOREVER until lastnight.

I try to keep myself behind the wheel of a cl***ic 365 days a year. It doesn't always work out that way but i'm pretty close to accomplishing that.

The Willys is a bit of a chore to drive to work though. What takes me 30 minutes in the BGT, takes about 50 in the Willys. No OD = 45 mph and long back way to work.

You'll be happy you chose to go with an antique car for a daily driver. The only time it'll be a little frustrating is if you don't have OD and you HAVE to get somewhere quickly. It doesn't happen often to me... but if I gotta be somewhere lickety split in the Willys it can be a little frustrating at 45 mph lol.

    Good luck with your decision,

    -Chris

I drive the '54 in my avatar almost every day. I just drove it to Bakersfield and back last week end with bias ply's, getting 20mpg at a solid 65 mph. If I'm not driving that, I drive my '67 Lambretta scooter. They are the only vehicles I have that run now. The '65 Morris Mini and the '70 Dart need work.

My sedan is on the road every day. I didn't build it to sit in storage. I can never understand how anyone can spend a great deal of time, effort and money doing a car...and not use it.

For me, these cars are like time-machines, and driving them frequently really takes me back. I'm old enough, (52) to remember a few late 30's, plenty of 40's, and loads of '50's models runnin' around. This was the early 60's...say '61...I was 4 yrs. old. I can clearly remember sitting on the porch steps watching a local teen lumbering down the street in a gray-primered late 30's business coupe jalopy, and the neighbor boys were greasers through and through. I idolized those guys. We lived kitty-corner from a big old Catholic church, (it's not there now) and I would be sure to be sittin' on those steps Sunday mornings, when it was nice out, to watch all the shiny 40's and 50's cars pull up and line the streets. Anyway, that's when it started, and it's never left me. I dislike any car after 1970, and actually, nothing past the 50's does much for me...boring. I'd much rather drive one of my oldies to anything else, and I enjoy being "that guy that drives the really-old car all the time". For me, it's 1961 again...I like it. -- Rick

  26. I bought a 49 plymouth about 2 weeks ago and have been driving it daily. I plan to keep on doing that as long as there is no snow. This thing weighs as much as a tank and I live at the top of a big hill. I can only imagine it sliding out of control taking out houses along the way! I also built a 78 yamaha hardtail chopper which I rode daily over the summer.

I've been driving my '41 pickup as my daily, until it was recently sidelined. The last couple of months, been driving my roadster. Busted a valve spring yesterday, so I better get busy on the truck; gotta have something to drive Monday.

I know exactly what you mean...all this having a car in the garage for the odd trip out, is a total waste.....I am going to use mine as much as possible....if it breaks i`ll fix it, if it gets bent, I`ll staighten, ...it`s a car, not a piece of antique furniture..a time will come when you`ll not be able to drive your car at will...enjoy it while you can.

Out of all the rides on here, for some reason, yours speaks to me the most. Your treatment is what I hope to apply to my 50....mine won't have as much character, though.
