Hot Rods Is this a real '32 tail light? Or are they '32 through '36?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 28A, Sep 22, 2011.

  1. Heres a pic of something i'm thinking of buying.. i want to know if its '32 only or '32 through '36. I googled and the '33 onwards seem to be even between both sides, whereas '32 have the big and little gaps if you get me.

Anyway, heres the pic. Any help is appreciated fellas!

The lens retainer ring is 32. No sure about the rest. 32's had two light bulbs with a sheet metal divider between them. The divider was not removable as it was sandwiched under the mounting nuts. The bucket should be marked Dualamp behind the license light opening and the the back. It appears the tabs for the ring are gone. I think the bucket is 33-36.

The divider is what has the treaded tabs to hold the ring's screws. And Andy is right, the divider is supposed to keep the two bulbs separate.

    Skip it.

The little screws are staggered ... upward on a 32 tail light.
They are centered accross from each other on the 33/34.

To further confuse things, the '32 taillight was used on various commercials nearly up th WWII...most of the parts like rim and lens were altered along the way, but kept the original numbers because they would still fit. The rim, for instance, is countersunk on the later ones for oval head screws, while real '32 one used round head screws on a flat rim. Late lenses fit all versions, but protrude a bit past plane of rim. Bucket shown is not '32 of any sort.

  7. Guys thank you for the info so far. Seems a little confusing as to what EXACTLY it is. I decided to take a chance on it and buy it, because it was only $14. If i can make it work, sweet.. if not i'll throw it back on ebay for what i paid or maybe a mate of mine building a bobber bike might want it.

It is actually a great candidate for a conversion. I like to cut the divider bar out of a original 32 tail light and install a cut down Corvair tail light housing. I cut away all of the Corvair housing ( aluminum ) ... until the outer diameter fits inside the outside ring. That gives me a 1 piece reflector inside my 32 tail lights. A 1157 tail light socket is in the center of the reflector ... so I have a tail light just like the Corvair but it looks like the 32 tail light. :D

Likely it is some version of the '33-up light with a '32 rim jammed on.

  10. I quite like this idea. We can't really get corvair lights over here, but i can make up my own light bucket out of mirror finish stainless or aluminium and mount it onto that if i decide to go that way.

I'm thinking of mounting it to the back panel similar to how most flush mount their lights, i think '32 lights would be something out of the ordinary.. i haven't seen it done before anyway.
