I ran across stock 40 Willys coupe at the Pomona swap meet today and I was shocked at the price. Its all steel and all original. There is some rust to be dealt with, but not a lot of cancer. I took some pictures. Tell me what you think

It's worth it to the person that owns it,,,, thats all that really matters.

Not in my opinion. If he didn't sell it then nobody else thought it was worth it either.

You know any $50k hot rods that sell instantly? I wouldn't pay that much for it either. Someone might. Unmolested STEEL Willys are not exactly commonplace. If you think because it didn't sell that means ****, then every car here in the cl***ifieds that hasn't sold YET isn't worth the price.

Well I wouldnt ever pay that much for a finished one without history but that said, my old man always told me its only worth what someone will pay.... So I guess he will find out what its worth.

Looks like an old sign...Everytime I would find a car for sale in a driveway and it had a faded old for sale sign usually turned out to be so overpriced that noone ever bought it and the sign looks like its been with the car since new..but with that Willys,

I would just ask yourself if that was your Willys..what would you be asking for it?
A car like that does allow its owner to pretty much push the ceiling on price..He knows that if you dont like his price then you can keep walking to the next row and try and find another steel Willys for less....He will always have someone running up that is interested to see what his price is..its just that kind of car..the desire for it is definetly there..

I wouldnt pay it myself but theres a **** for every seat and I am sure someone that MUST have a steel car and has the cash will eventually step up and throw another 50k+ at it to finish it...
Didnt look like much was selling at Pomona anyway..

You have to wonder how much he originally paid for it? Thats some tidy profit for 50k.

  12. $49,5? Tell him hes dreaming, I wouldn't go a cent over $49,499! But isn't that little motor just the started for the Hemi option?

Paid for it? He paid nothing, in fact it's rumored he GOT PAID to pick it up!

What does that have to do with the value?

i fell in love with the 40-41 willys when i was about 13 im 54 now. ive wanted one for a long time.but life kept coming at me and i spent my money else where.like house wife kids .built many cars and bikes. i either couldnt find one in my part of the woods or make a choice between willys or my house.sometimes i wish the willys would have one.ive looked at many over the years and they were high.i could buy the car but then i couldnt afford to build it.but from what ive seen and priced lately i dont think it will bring 49,000 but it wont be to far off.i havent seen one in that good of shape yet.they may be out there but ive not found one yet.everything is way out of line these days..a new car25,000 a decent house where we live is over 100,000.hell a box of cereal is 5.00 smokes over 3.00.but if you want to play you will pay and thats it. so i haad to settle for a gl*** 41.one good thing about gl*** is it will be really fast with a 500 hp small block. hell the whole body dont weigh 225 lbs. when its done it will be beautiful but in my heart i know it aint real if it aint steel!!(and with a hemi)but it will be mine and it wont cost me 25,000 either.good thing i got my own hotrod and custom bike shop or i couldnt afford what i do have.

while I am sure that holds some resemblance of truth I also know that almost every one that sells at swap meets starts out kinda high, hoping for that ding dong that has more money than anyone else.

thanks to the commercial success of rat rods everything is worth a fortune these days. common or not.

  17. The last all steel original Willys I saw was over 10 years ago and it was $25000.........To someone with unlimited funds its worth it, throw an old hemi, 4 gear, pre 64 Pontiac rear, add a straight axle, and some halibrandts, and letter it like an original g***er car, what would you pay then??????

Steel willys coupes in former race car/needs restored/junk condition some times bring a 1/3rd or 1/2 what hes asking. If it were mine Id ask the moon for it too.........you can always come down in price as we all know, and who knows.........if you walked up with a bunch of fresh benjamins what it would take to actually buy it.......then again, we all know someone who has a neat car, and throws a hi price tag on it just to have people ask about it(cause deep down inside they really dont want to sell it).

It depends on how bad you want one. My husband and i looked for 5 years before we found ours. The all steel original cars are extremly hard to come by. You can pay up to $5,ooo just for a deck lid.

Find another one. To me, that is worth 50K long before a new finished gl*** one is worth 75K.

Not that I could afford either.

Sure... it will be bought by a big name builder who is doing a high buck car for a guy who doesn't care about the price, just that is orig and steel and the year and model he wants. Four years from now it will be a SR cover car with some famous / chainer guy's name on it we all recognize and headed for the big car shows. I've known buiders to buy a built rod just for the body and throw the frame and engine in the s**** pile. Some builders just want what they want. If the guy who own's the Willys mets the right guy, the price is no problem. This kind of buying / building doesn't help anyone else keep the prices realistic, but they don't care, eh? Gary

If I had an extra $40k lying around waiting on a project, I'd buy it. Willy's coupes are my dream cars and eventually I'll have one. I've wanted one for 35 years and haven't owned one. All steel...ummmmmm good.

Is it worth 50,000 good question...It has everything there and is pretty straight...it's pretty rare...... how much would a 32 ford like this go for...? I can't afford it but we all know there are some people with deep pockets in our hobby.....

That was my thought also. What's 50k to a guy that is having a million dollar car built???

A friend of mine sold a 41 coupe at fathers Day roadster show in '07 for $50k, soif that is the car you want and having an original is important, then yes it is worth it.

This one actually looks a little more together than the friends 41.

There is one very simple rule in sales...
"It is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay you for it".
    That's it.
Doesn't matter what the guy wants for it, needs for it, thinks it's worth, or anything else.
It's a nice Willys. I'd rather get a good fibergl*** reproduction before I'd hack up that clean of an original, but that's just me. The market for restored cars, unfortunately, is not as strong as for wildly modifiied originals. But that just points back to free market, supply and demand, good old American business.

I think it will bring that. There are WAY more Willy's freaks than there are Willys coupes. One of them has $50,000 that they will not mind letting go of to live the dream.

Even if it's not worth the $50K, you can't blame the guy for tryin. It is much easier to come down on his price than to go up.
