Is this car really worth 50K ????

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by hotrodjim, Jan 19, 2009.

  1. I have no doubt that car will sell for that price or very close to it. This looks like a better car than the all steel '40 coupe roller that I saw sell for $50,000 at the fathers day swap meet a couple of years ago.

I agree with Kiwi Kev - a long time Willys guy.

They are not being reproduced (unless you have a body cu$$$tom built) - unlike '32 Ford and '34 Ford 3W coupes. It takes a Willys guy to understand, but yes the car will probably get close to that price. Is it worth it for an unmolested all steel car - try find one that has not been butchered? If you want one, probably. If you have seen the prices for original steel and far more common '32/'33'34 Ford 3W coupes and ragtops at the LA Roadster Show swap meet then it is not that outrageous. $150k is not unheard of for a well built all steel Willys coupe.

Would I pay it - no, but then I am cheap and damn proud of it - what do you think I am? After all I have a reputation to defend!:D

I got some friends that are way into 40-41 willys, they only will play with steel ones. Thats a pile of cash and that's what they go for.

You'll find 50 steal 32's fords before you'll find one of these, this one looks very, very nice!

I love 40-42 Willys Coupes and I watch the prices as I've always wanted one. The one thing with this particular car that needs to be considered is what the buyer is going to do with it? If the buyer is going to turn it into a g***er then I would hold out for a car with history even if it needs a lot more work. If the buyer is going to go pro-street then they should p*** and buy a fibergl*** body. If the buyer is going to restore it stock or maybe with some mild period hop up items then I think it's worth the 50k.

just don't see all steel cars in that condition. They are usually very porous. I have purchased two all steel hulks in the past year. Didn't pay that much, but they were not that nice, nor that complete. I think he is right asking that much and feel it is well worth the $40k he would likely accept for it. Somebody on here needs to buy it.

Watch some guy will roll into town with a Hemi-powered 65 Plymouth and get it for free? Maybe the current owner has it in for the Munn's and wants to see them beat!

Willys coupes are always parked near the "unobtanium" aisle, aren't they?

  8. There is a junker here with the top caved in that I was quoted at 25-30K, I bet 35K would buy it.

you could build a complete hot rod for the money you paid for that car. guess if you're made of money with nothing else to spend it on its your choice. this is America.

Its funny, I never thought willys were a good lookin car, I just dont like'm. So I guess it's not worth anything to me. Ive painted a couple gl*** ones that turned out freakin nice, just not what I would spend money on.

  11. Looks like it's worth $35-50K to the right buyer. Look at how much car you get for the money, rather than these rusted out swamp finds that you see folks starting from that they paid $15-20 g's for.

    If it's not made from steel it's not a Willys period - if it's fibergl***, it's just a fake.

Ask Randy Ferguson or Troy Thompson to make a steel 1940 Willys coupe body and you'll find that $50k for a complete original 1940 De Luxe Willys coupe in the condition of this one is a bargain in comparison.

I remember watching that hot rod show with Boyd what's-his-name where he wanted to build a 61 Mercury station wagon. He started a search and found one for sale in a museum that the guy wanted $30,000 for. I remember thinking "well there goes THAT car because only an idiot would pay $30,000 for a 61 Mercury wagon." Well, he bought it. How many more guys want to build a steel Willys compared to a 61 Merc wagon? For guys like Ron Pratt, Leno, etc. $50,000 is like $20 bucks to me and you.

It would not suprise me if the guy who finally buys it will have found out about it through this thread.

Is it worth it ? Ask yourself whens the last time you saw one at a yard sale, street corner lot, or swap meet for sale ?

It's worth whatever someone will pay.

  17. I was stunned to even SEE that all steel, uncut Willys Coupe at Pomona. How many more could there be in captivity that have NOT been restored/cut/wrecked? I think it's worth the asking price.
On the other hand, if you want to play with an all-steel '37 Willys that has racing history AND is not a rust bucket for the paltry sum of $6,000, send me a pm . . . you even get 2 extra doors, free.

I sold a 1976 Mustang II for $45K. That Willy's will bring $50. of course, the MII was a 1 of 1 protoype.

It will probably bring the money. One here in Kansas sold about 2 years ago for 70K , might have been a little better. Restoration on it is well on its way.

  20. This one was also for sale at the Pomona swap meet,.....in the early 80's. Can't remember exact price. I think it was 3-4 grand.

I don't think the price will be a problem. The buyer is out there he just needs to see the car....

Rare and desirable. I'd say he can get that if he holds out long enough for the right buyer. A gl*** one with a Hemi sold for about $40,000 around here. I'd pay $10,000 more for one that nice if I had the $$ to burn some people in the hobby seem to have.

If it stays in tact and the buyer restores it, it will be worth more since it will be one of a handful of uncut/unmodified ones in existence.

when you die your cash stays here on earth. You have to ask yourself.......how much enjoyment would I get out of this car ? ? ?

    then buy it

There is a fully restored 40 here in Minneapolis. He turned down 100K for the car.

A couple years ago my uncle was gonna build a pro street type willys in gl*** and it was going to cost him @120,000. I said for that much you could build steel, he laughed and told me it would be 3x that in steel

It's worth what someone's willing to pay. I wouldn't be willing to pay that, but if you really want a real Willys where you gonna go?
