As some here may recall this design was known to explode upon backfire from an i'll-timed engine. I beleive one slang term was "Boom Box" long before the Ghetto version surfaced in later years. Bought this many moons ago but recently went to use it for an O'l School '54 g***er project and found resin inside. Top Plenum looks good with no obvious cracks, breaks or other signs of destruction. Don't have the means to penetrant inspect for cracks so I'm soliciting the advice of the experts here to help me differentiate whether it's salvagable or a door stop. Thanks for any advise.
I’ve mentioned this here before but I’ll relate it again for benefit of @willys54 . To make a long story short on a trip to OKC for the Street Rod Nats decades ago my wife’s cousin had a 350, Crower cam, TR-1 with two 1850’s in his Model A Tudor. After he got home he had the top off the manifold and there was about a half inch of raw gas sitting on the floor of the plenum. I always thought it was the steady cruising at relatively low RPM with highway gears that allowed gas to fall out of suspension. Listen to @blue 49 and leave that filler in there.
I appreciate all the feedback and I'm somewhat relieved the resin wasn't applied in an attempt to glue it back together after exploding. I'm glad I checked in on the HAMB since I did try to soak & chip it out but that **** is harder than ****'s hatband so I gave up. It makes perfect sense now as to why it was applied.....BUT.....with age the resin has become brittle (at least on the surface) and I was able to s**** off chips/flakes by applying light pressure with a putty knife. Knowing my valvetrain/cylinders would not favor ingesting any of that ****, how do you guys recommend I proceed. Perhaps a light sandblast or br*** wire wheel then apply a clear coat of some variety?
Maybe Not solid... If wanting to remove some or most or all end mill , Hole saw , , carbite. Remove all or 1/4 -1/2 inch ,Re pure Resin Or After take poster board make templet Weld in there are many ways to do @ Home Drill press or Free hand guild & none guide
I would sell it and buy something that is less questionable, if I was building a car to use. You said what was on now was flaking. You spend time to clean it all off and replace it with something else. What happens if what you choose comes apart?
The resin was the fix but I wonder if you could use the TR-1X gasket glued in to prevent any of the old resin going down the runners.
^^^^^^ Even if Not Poster board make pattern Then cut from gasket's sheet . There are diffrent thicknesses . Would have to pay attention to gap so when tighten bolt not to brake ears.
