Where's the line between rod and custom? Is it the skirts? Man, I really like the looks of this car but I really don't want to build another "custom". I'm all for the taillight idea that was suggested in my other post (lower and flush mount the stock lense and bezel) and I want to keep the bumpers. These are the caps I'll being using and I'll be adding dumps (both have been photoshopped on to this photo). Have I crossed too far over the "custom" fence?
In my opinion, regardless of the mill and the sneaky fenderwell headers, no. The car doesn't have the rake, it has skirts and therefore it's firmly planted in custom territory. It could in an hours work become a hot rod though.
sweet rod without the skirts. or keep the skirts and add dummy spots and a visor, then you got a custom! Paul
Skirted cars have to have their**** on the ground....that car would look better without the skirts....maybe add some fake patina to finish it off
take off the skirts and the hood....hot rod...need to be sly and go out on the town..skirts and hood make it a custom.that way you have both..im working on getting a 41 ford....i wont have skirts....and my hood will hang on the wall.plus im gonna take about 6 inches out..and....yadda...i guess i better get it home first.
I'm usually not a big fan skirts, well at least not on cars, but they do look good in that pic, I think anytime you make a lot of changes to a fat fendered car it's more of custom then a rod, especially skirts. Donzie just remember the most important thing is to do what you want and what you like, and enjoy it. Also I have confirmed the tub is Dearbon, right next to the baddest T-coupe around and a shop truck, took a few shot but it was crowded in there, rest asurred it's in good hands.
Hey...that tub has "history"....they aren't gonna change anything are they???....leave it the way they got it...you know...no engine!!!
Hatch, my understanding is, other than putting a motor in it, he plans on moving the gas tank and adding a rear seat. He's looking in to have a nice upholstery job done. So much for a "rat rod". Oh, and I think he said something about replacing those gawd awful taillights.
So what are you after Donz? A custom...a hot rod...a street rod? A custom is what the picture is... A hot rod will have blakwalls, a slight rake, no skirts, chrome reversed wheels or some shiny types, patina or spotted primer on a gloss base where you've taken off emblems, door handles, etc....cleaned up engine compartment, dual exhaust and decent interior... A street rod will have a billet-laden SBC and a 700 R-4 behind it, 18" and 19" billet wheels, radials, stainless exhaust, dark-tinted glass, tweed interior, tilt wheel, A/C. a heavy rake to the front, air bags...and no miles... Just my 13 cents worth... R-
That is NOT a hot rod, IMO. Kustom for sure. This is more of a hot rod look.. Removing the hood is debatable, but it needs a rake and IMO not too many kustom touches.
Who cares what it is? It's his car and he's happy and thats all that matters. You build what you like, not what everyone else likes. But just my two cents though.
Donzie, look in the Show me your Flames thread. There are several "hot rod" Fords in there that have the hot rod look, whether or not you like the flames.
This car has skirts on it, i would consider it a hot rod. If its Hopped Up, i would consider it a hot rod, if your doing it for smooth lines and sllek looking i would consider it a custom. Nate
No matter how you build it Donzie, it'll still be super gay! Just ask yourself which way it would look cooler sittin on top of the hill in Frankenmuth... After all it's all about other people thinkin it's cool, right? Why the hell would you build what you want when you could build what other people like just as easily!?!
I'm not a real fan of the post-war fat fendered Fords, however that is a nice looking little coupe. Add some rake, loose the skirts & it will look like a hotrod to me. I think you should raise her up, add some kidney beans, dump in a Ford cammer, add some cool inside the fender headers & go gasser style!
Donzie.........I can't believe I'm hearing this***** from YOU! If you like the skirts and dumps, put 'em on your car and***** what ANYONE calls it. Rod, Kustom,**************.......who cares?? Build it the way you like and enjoy it. Come on man......snap out of it!!
[ QUOTE ] In case you haven't seen it yet, this is what I'm working with. [/ QUOTE ] that's a hot rod. hang the hood on the wall to show off a souped up mill, give it a bit more rake and you're there! -somehow the cap on front but not back works too! serious! Paul
Donzie, it's looking pretty "hot rod" as it sits. Haha, you do need to make it your own though. I am sticking to my guns here... skirts = not a hot rod. Here's Tudor's '46... hot rod.
Personally, I think those things make better customs than rods...but that just me. Fat fenders are meant to be customs, just like pre-35 cars are meant to be rods. (imho) That being said, the current state of the car is hot rod. The pic posted at the start of the thread is custom. But what's wrong with a hot rod custom? Just cause it is low in the back and has skirts doesn't mean it needs to be a slug. Put as much motor as you want, right?
If it makes you smile that is all that matters, everyone else can******* off. Do you know what I mean? Chuck
Donzie, why do you care what it's called? No matter what you do some people are going to argue that a 40s car cannot be a hot rod. Definition snefimition. I say that a hot rod should be stripped down and fast, whereas a custom has a lot of fancy work, paint and doodads, and speed isn't as important. A few custom touches don't make a difference. If you like the skirts, leave em. Hop up the engine and call it a CUSTOM ROD.
id say do the tail lights and a few other things to make it your own, but as far as the hot rod factor i think after you dump a masssive motor in it, it should have the right rake an ect to scream hot rod loud enough for anyone to hear it just my two cents tim
Sounds like what you want is a custom that hauls****. I wish more were built that way. I actually liked the Hot Rodded Custom Stallone had in Cobra. Never could understand the whole "Low & Slow" thing...
That thing is a kustom for sure. No doubt. Here's my two cents: Hot Rod Ingredients -Hopped up motor -Nice rake -Steelies & small caps & cheater slicks -Mininal body modification -Loud as hell **absolutely no skirts** Kustom ingredients -Stock or mild motor -Laid low -Wide whites & full caps -Body modifications
In my opinion its whats under the hood that makes it "HOT" in hot rod.. A real custom is all show and no go.I like to think of a car like that a rod and custom!
