My power steering started leaking right after I had new tires installed. Can anyone tell me how to bully an honest shop into fixing my high mileage beater before I have to get my hands dirty? If it drips on the driveway I will have to move.

I am embarrassed to be a hot rodder right now.... Where should I turn in my man card?

I think that was my problem...they put the "slippery oil" in my car.:D

BTW- my question wasnt how to bully anyone so dont get it twisted.
I have a 45 year old car, and thats what 45 year old cars do...they leak. I suggest you do the same as me, and get over it and fix shit yourself.

Just a note from a friend. You may not have learned your lesson yet! If your put a rear main seal in. But the problem is the engine is so worn out that the blow by pressure is the reason it is leaking in the first place. It will come back. It's old. IF your a H.a.m.b.ster . And you love the car. Then fix the whole thing. Ugotpk

the engine isnt worn out, its the rear main. I had it in the air and watched it drip. Valve covers are dry,and I just put a new oil press guage on last night,(which was dry prior to me working on it) The car has 38,000 on it but was sitting for a good deal of time before I bought it. Shit happens....just a little more often for me :)

  6. WOW i did not know a 1.5-2.0 thoul could ruin a seal! get real the crank is always on the berg with just a piss amount of oil for a cushion. rope seals in the day were good because nothing else was around, if they are so good now why don't the manfactures use them?

hey this is just my opinon and coments. oh by the way opora sucks! thats my opinon.
    what's yours?

  9. Well i guess you must be the man on this subject! rope seals don't apply pressure on the sealing surface where as the neoprene has a natural pressure and also uses the oil pressure to seal it. the rope seal after time will get flattened and loose what little seal they have. where did you come up with the idea that the crank will sit on the bottom bearing and take out the seal? the trans seal will give more than the crank will settle on the bearing, oh yeh lets not forget about the pump bushing in the trans that should help support it! i had a great day thank you!

why all the fighting in here? the only thing i can think of is if it was in the air and oil was dripping from the rear main, with the transmission already out, why didn't they contact the owner and explain to him what they had found? it would have been a whole lot eaisier to replace it while the tranny was out of the car. A good shop would show the leak to the owner and explain to them why it should be replaced at this point in time. just my 2 cents

i'm just surprised you found a mechanic willing to work on a slim-jim. most i know'll laugh you out of the shop or tell you to come back when you get a th350. anyway, i'm pretty sure kanter had a rear main seal for my buddy's '59 pontiac 389 when it started to leak. check there.
