I tried to post pics but was unable to figure it out, so Scootermcrad will post the pics for me later today or in the evening. This is a 150 MPH speedo I built out of an 80 mph Cougar speedo. I removed the needle stops so it would allow more travel. The speed indicator ****ons were cut from a chunk of tail light lens with a piece of br*** tubing made into a saw tooth pattern , I cut them out on a drill press with the lens submerged in water for cooling . The numbers were stamped using old typewriter keys heated with a butane torch. The red ring was cut with a dremel & sanded & polished. The housing is part of a aluminum kitchen cannister mated with a park lite bezel from a Chrysler Cordoba. There are LED indicators for hi beam & turnsignals in the Face plate. I had the gl*** cut , it IS gl*** not plastic. I can't remember how I figured the spacing of the speed marks , but I had a speedo shop test it. At first they scoffed at the whole idea-- I asked them to calibrate it -- they said "ain't no adjustment -- it either works or it don't & it won't!! " Changed their tune when they ran it up & it turned out to be only 2 MPH off at 150!!! I built this for my sons 50 merc , but that car got stolen before it was done , so now I guess if it "ain't Too billet" , I might use it in the roadster. So whats the verdict -- Billet or OK ?
my 2 cents...... too much time spent worrying about billetproof, is time that could be spent enjoying your project. build it how you want and you will enjoy it more.
Now I don't know about anybody else - but it sounds like you put enough time/energy/ingenuity into this piece to transcend beyond fears of billet.
I agree with sgtmcd42... build it like you want it. personally i;m not a big billit fan but i do have respect for those that build that clean of a ride. The biggest reason o dont like billiet is it is too hard to keep clean. Enjoy your project that is what it is all about
i've seen the pics of the gauge, in fact i encouraged ol fueler to post it after hearing his concerns it was "too billet" much to the contrary, it's bad***! i need to leave for work in a minute so i don't have time to post it, but it's cool. homemade stuff is the bestest.
I'll watch for the pics, but I think Billet implies commercially produced products of polished or machine finished aluminum. I believe anything you carve out of whatever is handy with your own two hands is exempt. Aluminum is not bad, especially when you put the file marks in it and honed out the corners.
HOLY COW! No pressure or anything!! I don't get home for a few more hours. I can't access my email from work. As soon as I get home I'll upload them so you guys can see it. I'm excited to see this myself! I haven't seen it yet... I'll get them up as soon as I get home.... keep your ******* on...
I like that theory!! Only exception is if you actually built something billet... Man! I can't wait to get home and post these pictures now! I haven't seen them and now I've got this crazy image in my mind of what it looks like! I love homemade stuff also! Especially when it's not just for looks (or flare!) and actually works.
Here's what I'm using. It ain't billet, but it's source is just as questionable... Alls I know is I needed a speedo and had this thing laying around AND it's got all the important idiot lights in it so the only other gauge I need is fuel and that should be easy enough to match to this. If you spent that much time on yours, I say use it and use it proudly. Vance
I'll say it'll p***..... ****, just kidding, as if we have the say on your car or not! Sounds pretty damn cool to me! USE IT!
Okay, here's his pics... Not even remotely billet looking! Looks good to me! I say run it! Now start getting down to business with that Hemi T Roadster!!!!
It's a far cry cooler then anything from Autometer, S/W or any other mfger. USE IT and brag about it! Vance
I like how past 90mph, the number backgrounds are a bit bigger... just tell p***engers when the needle hits the big circles, they had better grab the "OH ****!" handle! Very cool......
it's ugly as sin, send it my way and I'll dispose of it... but really, that's pretty bad ***... run it...
that there is pretty darn niffty IMHO...as far as "is it too...?" **** worry'n bout what anyone else thinks...if you like it run it. nice job & um..er..how much to duplicate?
I'm with Zman...that thing is terrible ...how much would you want for me to take it off your hands so I can "dispose" of it properly?
This is getting out of hand in my opionion if you have to ask if a cool part you made for your hotrod is ok. There is nothing "Billet" about that part. What am I missing.
