I’ve been known to bring my work indoors in the winter. I was soaking my Mercury carb in my buddies 5 gallon can of Berrymans (the oldschool stuff), in the ba*****t shop. My wife, with the bionic nose, rants when she is only 2’ inside the house, because she can smell it.
I was working on my OT Harley a few years back while the wife was out of town. I sent pics of the chrome exhaust sitting in the kitchen sink dish drainer after I washed and waxed it. I sent the pics to one of my kids, who forwarded them to the wife. She still gets mad at me.
A family story. My wife’s dad and her uncle carried his motorcycle engine up the stairs of their small apartment, then proceed to dis***emble it in the bathtub. Mom got home and decided this was the last straw, and walked out the door. For good. Something tells me this wasn’t the first time he had pulled something like this!

In my first apt. , age 17, I had a motorcycle frame hanging from the kitchen light fixture. Getting ready to start painting it and the landlord stopped by for the rent. To say that he was not happy would be an understatement. At least he didn't kick me out.

Thought that as well, but in the laundry room and an off balance load in the washer, can work wonders.

I had the rebuilt buckets for the Monza in my livingroom for awhile. My daughter had her rabbit out for the holidays. Everybody wanted to sit in the seats. IMG-20151225-00066.jpg

Ummmm, when I met my woman, my shovel was in my bedroom alongside one wall, stored for the winter, she thought it was so cool we did the wild thing on it several times, parts in my house were common. Now, forty years later.....not so much, she's not a car or bike person, just kind of evolved into that, I'm "allowed" to have "some stuff" in my office, there are no pics in the house of the long haired poorly dressed outlaw she fell hard for, the coolest guy ever walked, in our house you'd never know there were cars and bikes in the shop.
When she dies, there'll be a shovel in the living room the day after her funeral. Trust me.....

Unless of course you die first and then the pool boy will be moving in the day after your funeral.

Polishing out some old chrome in the bath tub today instead of doing it in the 30 degree garage.

370inlivingroom (1).JPG I built a Pontiac 389 in the garage but when it was done I wrestled it into the family room and put it behind my recliner and threw a dark colored towel over it. She never saw it. 370inlivingroom (1).JPG

    Hello,

Your kitchen and reason, hits close to our teenage times. We lived in a very small 1946 two bedroom/one bath house on the Westside of Long Beach. As my brother and I started our growth spurts, the small house was becoming too small for our family of 4. So, my parents had the neighborhood carpenter build a study/den between the two sides of the U-shaped patio. It utilized the two French opening doors from the living room into the newly created den. One other new door went into our bedroom and one into the kitchen. The two teens had direct access to the kitchen for some nutrients.

In 1959-60, it was my job to clean and polish some finned aluminum valve covers from our 283/292 SBC motor. The day I was starting the job was one of the coldest on record and the small backyard garage area my brother and I built did not have any heating. So, I brought the valve covers inside to continue cleaning and polishing the set. On our nice card table with a plastic cloth, I started with the mild abrasive, light weight steel wool and rubbing compound.

My mom thought I was studying, so she left me alone. The aluminum finish had the standard shine, but my brother wanted a “real” shine on the covers to highlight the fins on the 283 SBC. The area between the fins was to remain a little lighter/darker finish for a good contrast.
upload_2021-1-24_5-1-23.png similar motor and set up in 1960
So, I continued my silent cleaning, then polishing. As we all know, cleaning and polishing any aluminum makes for plenty of dark stains on the strips of cloth and the surrounding areas. As I was finishing one side of the valve covers, getting ready to clean out the area between the fins, my mom walked in to give me a nice sandwich and drink. She was aghast at the sight of blackened pieces of torn cloth laying on the floor, table and our study desks. The card table had some darkened spots on the edges that showed up under the cover.

Needless to say, she had a fit and instantly told me to get that **** out of the house and into the backyard garage… “where it belongs…” She was not the biggest supporter of our hot rod/drag racing adventures. But, she liked it because the two brothers were able to work together and not argue/fight over anything.

When my brother came home later, he found me with a sweatshirt and jacket on, using gloves inside of the closed garage door workroom, he was wondering what was happening. It was still cold, but being bundled up made it a little better. Ever have cold mist coming out of your mouth while you talk to someone, inside of a room? It was cold, but my brother laughed at the situation and said that the one cover looked fabulous.

There is another earlier actual Chevy head cleaning incident that was also not a good situation in the cold weather for us teenagers. Some kids just take advantage of any situation to stay healthy and WARM.

(the 283 SBC valve covers were the same ones we used, when we rebuilt the carburetor motor to the 671 SBC supercharged 292 c.i. blower spec version)
