Don't trust wikpedia. According to them Robert Dunlop started racing on 250s. I used to go to the Island on a regular basis when I lived in Ireland. I was in Peel castle looking at some historical documents on display. One document was dated 1612 and the spelling was MAN. When did they drop the second N? Its always been one N. Robert started racing on a 50cc Kriedler. I raced with him and Joey for several seasons. The only way I could beat him was if he fell off! They were an unbelievable pair of racers. Fast and brave. Heres a photo I took of Robert when we went over to the Island to race at the Jurby road circuit. The photo was taken in Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland. [/IMG] The orange Kreidler is mine. The green kreidler is Robert's and the red fairing bike is a nifty monocoque built by Don Carlisle. Minarelli powered. [/IMG]
firingorder1, can only imagine what it must have been like to run with the Dunlops,..freaking awsome... I promised myself a trip but somehow never got round to it....... maybe ..... oh and as far as i know ...it's always been one 'N' I regret not coming and saying Hi at El mirage (sept 09) did you get that Weslake up to 130 ?? Keith . .
My grandmother was Mona Douglas head of the Manx Society. Have always wanted to go see the tt race and the drags, maybe some day
I stand corrected, one T from now on! Have a look at this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVXc29ZgutI Nick.
I know very little,if anything about bikes.I did however have a workmate when I was in the Air Force who raced in the TT regularly.I would never get in a car with him as he drove like he rode his bike,flat-out or stop! Borderline suicidal if you ask me,a different breed.
Bluto. Thats waaaaay beyond nice!! Keith. Robert and I raced the same class for about three seasons. But he was just too fast and too good and headed for the stars. The funny thing about Robert and Joey was that despite their "stardom", in the pits they were just Robert and Joey. Sorry, too, that I missed you at the Sept. El Mirage. The sidecar ran 122 that day. 130 is still the target. But it will do it this year. We aregetting a ot of rrain right now and hopefully El Mirage is too. We need a decent surface to run on. Its been***** the last few years. Ya gonna make it back any time soon?
This is my Local rider Paul Owen, quite a character! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKrEBf95zyQ Nick.
I guess they new what grass roots was all about, sad day when Joey went... Planning on coming back in September again,so i need to work on the dates for El mirage, hopefully will see you then. Keith
The motor in my Norton is from Harry Hinton, Norton's B (invited guest) team. The bike was built by Hintons for sprinting some years later out of old factory bits they had laying around Sadly I've not ridden in years and sell all our bikes. Go look in my photos
Sorry to hear you're not riding. I'm afraid to stop. I have the feeling if I do I'll die. Anyway racing is better than sitting around listening to arteries harden. A Hinton motor should have been a quick one. I'm a total*****er for Nortons (I was raised right). I had a cammy (ex-Reg Dearden) Norton on the road for a while. It did double duty as a road ride and race ride. Broke it racing. The Norton is still running but with a Weslake speedway motor. Former Bonneville record holder and current El Mirage record holder. Oil is for engines............. Proper forks use grease My heart isn't very good ..... that's what stopped me riding..... your lucky you've had a choice. I can still lay on the tank and hear pipe echo of the stone walls I feel sure someone will love our bikes and give them a good home
