Issues with uploading/missing photos

Discussion in 'Questions & Suggestions' started by Robert J. Palmer, Aug 5, 2025.

  1. Is anyone else having issues with uploading photos?

I tried uploading a few photos several times last night, they would either show very briefly and disappear, or I would get some kind of too large for sever message.

I also tried to upload the same photos from work and had the same issue.

I am also having issue with photos I have uploaded "disappearing and only seeing IMG where the photo should be.

However, after going to edit post and but not making any changes but hitting save changes the photos reappear.

This happened both on my home laptop and at work.

    Missing photos with IMG message

After going to Edit and saving changes

I can't upload either, since yesterday. Ryan is aware of it and is working on it

    Hello,
Yes, the problem existed. But there is always a way to get around "size" in posting to any website. Reduce the size of your own photos or quit copying other posted photos in the largest possible "copy" you can get. Copy, then paste on to something like Microsoft Word to see how large the copied photo is as printed. Then make a smaller version of the same copy.

Here is one part of the story from a reply to @49ratfink with his problem yesterday. It was an easy fix on my own laptop within a few minutes of adjustments. The good thing is, now there is more space on my hard drive as the saved photos are slightly smaller and taking up less space. But, when I open those adjusted photos, they are large and are digitally ok to print, if I need to print them. YRMV

    Hello,

(These are not customs per se as per the topic originally listed, but as the thread goes to the next page, one may come across the same thing that @49ratfink had happen to his post. The changing of the latest digital cameras and Phone cameras has added a new thing to posting photos, as too large for the page.)

The days of the 5 mp phone cameras or digital cameras is long gone. The industry has upped its game and now it is common to see 12 mp on the average and up to 20 mp for middle of the road cameras. But, the high end cameras can go up to unheard of amounts. The larger MP allows larger digital prints without much loss of detail. Still, one needs to take into account the image, compose the photo for a concise detailed image and not have a hot rod in the middle of a row of trees in order to get the whole scene.

The hot rod will not come out clear if that composition is the main emphasis. If the hot rod is larger and the surrounding crapola is minimized, then the enlargement for the hot rod should be clear. With a stable platform when taking the shot, tripod or mono pod, focus, and good clear sunlight, all work to make a good photo.

Yes, with our new digital cameras and even the Iphone set at 24 MP, the photos will come out clear, most of the time. ( See above restrictions and helpers)

So, the resulting majority of photos saved on your own laptop or desktop computers takes up a lot of space. When printing, it gets squeezed down to the size needed. But as one posts the largest overall photo from the Apple Iphones, it will be large as a standard. Now, one has to take the photo and reduce the overall size.

Open your photo in the standard photo program. Find the RESIZE section. Open that up and now you will see the size it is in currently.

If the HAMB image says it is too large, then when you are on this site, reduce the width and height of the original photo. As you change one side, it automatically changes the other to keep the proportions.

Now, you can copy the altered image and paste it to the HAMB thread. If it is still too large, then follow the same steps and make the width x height smaller yet.

Yesterday, I had to change several photos from the storylines on other posts to make them fit into the final HAMB threads. YRMV

Today, I followed my own advice and made each one smaller in size, but yet, they showed up almost full size. Once the saved photo from your files is adjusted, then it easily is pasted within the printed story line.

    Hello,
Sorry you lost your photos. Been there, done that...but there is a way to be safe and have all of your files, including photos saved away from your main computer, however old it is.

    Hello,

The simplest way is to “copy image” and/or” save as.” It allows any image to be copied and saved to your computer files. Save as a Jpeg for most purposes. Label it so you will know where and what it is when you search your computer to find the exact photo.

The above photo was copied and saved as a Jpeg. Then I used my own photo program to adjust the busy background to get a good copy of the 55 Chevy sedan. It still gives you a clue as to where it was taken, but the busy stuff interfering with the 55 Chevy sedan is slightly blurred out. If that is not your “thing,” then right click on your mouse and “save as.”

Sorry you lost all of your photos. It pays to back up your photos to an external hard drive just for safe keeping. We lost the original 16mm color films transferred to a digital copy of our 40 Willys Coupe in the pits, in action and some pit shots. I know I took them as I made it into an old VHS when my brother was still around. Now, they are gone and so is the original 16mm color film reel.

Now, that all files are digital, it is easy to save and keep safe in an external hard drive. They are low cost, and can be stored in a safe deposit box with all of your other files. Your computer can still use the built in hard drive, but an extra outside of the home computer hard drive is always handy. Most can do with a 1TB hard drive.
    upload_2025-9-2_6-7-44.png
When these first came out, they were expensive around $150.00. (and the technology was in doubt.) But, even then, it was low cost safety for all of your scanned important files and family photos. It took me about a year to fill up the 1TB hard drive. Then I jumped up to 2TB and I had a ton more room to save. So, that lasted another two years, but eventually, it too, got full and the saved files were transferred to a 4 TB external hard drive.

So, you are saying why start with a 1 TB and go upwards as the need arrives. Well, it was the first time using digital hard drives. So, hopefully they would last for our computer uses. They did and I still cautiously bought the next larger unit until today, I have two 5tb external hard drives with duplicate storage files saved. One goes into our safe deposit box and the other I use almost daily. Files saved are good as they create memories that last.

Where did all of those old 1 TB and 2 TB hard drives go? I cleaned them up after transferring all of the information. Then I gave all of them to our granddaughter for her college studies. Saving files as one works is always a good backup to the current project or note taking + paper writings.

Now, our 5 TB will take a long time of saving everything for safe keeping. If an emergency arrives, our “go bag” is ready with our two external hard drive with our important papers and all of our family photos, including almost half of an old hard drive with our granddaughter’s actions since she was 6 months old to high school. Movies and photos were the one thing that fills up a hard drive. YRMV
