Same thing happened to me in the 90s. Gold is a damn good conductor. Had a jeweler cut off my ring the next day after my hand looked like the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Thought he was going to puke when he was cutting. TO THIS DAY........ I have a perfect scar around my finger that looks like I slipped my ring off to pretend I was single at the bar. My ex asked (while we were still married) if I was going to replace the ring.. hahahahahaha

If bleeding on it makes it mine, I own a lot of stuff! This thread reminds me of the movie "The Jerk" were Steve Martin said he quit donating blood twice a week because when he cut himself shaving, nothing but air came out!

Just had similar happen a few weeks ago TIG hot touch glove and ring under it inside the glove , cooked the finger 1/2 way around . Welding is a project that one must use PPE and think about dangers , Mr Murphy will stop by when you least expect him .

I had a dog that would let me know when I was on fire when welding or cutting. God I miss that dog.

    Hello,

Yes, we have all had blood on our hands, legs and wherever as the work went on our hot rods. Every now and then, there is actual work without any malfunctions and that is a good sign. But, we all had one or the other during those shop light late evenings or open hood work on the motor, etc.

When my brother just took off on a time trial run prior to the start of the eliminations in our then B/Gas class 40 Willys Coupe, (292 671 SBC motor no frame weight welded in as yet) it was a good run and we were excited to get prepped for the first round of eliminations. The B/Gas Class had some top names and we were ready to compete against them.

So, as my brother was ready to move the Willys Coupe to another “final prep” spot next to our place in the pits, he tried starting the motor. It cranked, but stopped and would not move again. It sounded like the solenoid was stuck. But, my brother crawled under the car and was going to take out the complete starter. I was to be his guide and helper from above, over the fender. I could reach the starter motor and he was ready to start the unbolting.

As he took out the bolts, the starter started(pun intended) to come out and fall down toward my brother’s face. So, I felt pressure on my hand and kept grabbing it to prevent the starter to hurt my brother laying down underneath. As I grabbed the starter tighter, the weight straightened out my bent arm, sending the bicep into the hot header pipe.

I could not let it go, as it would have fallen on my brother’s face and head. That would not have been good. so, I kept holding it despite the bicep skin now attached to the surface of the hot header pipe. It hurt like no other pain endured so far. But, at least my brother now had time to move away and then told me to let go of the starter. It fell on the spot where his head was a few seconds ago. He helped guide it to the ground and it was not damaged.

But, my poor bicep looked like half cooked sausage and the other parts bleeding around the whatever deeper layers called skin or it sounds awful thinking about it, but “meat.” My bicep was raw skin with burn marks around the edges and clear oozing “meat” showing at anyone who looked at it. We immediately went to the first aid booth and they had nothing to put on the wound except gauze. So we took some and went back to our pit area. I did not want to put anything on it because it was painful to the touch, although I did not touch the middle area.

I did not want to drive to our family doctor’s office, so I stood there in pain and was thinking of what was the purpose of a first aid kit without anything for a burn. And a serious one at that. Then I saw a can of unopened STP Engine Supplemental Oil. So, I remembered that our Boy Scout first aid training plan was to cover the wound to keep the bacteria out and not get infected.

So, as my brother was fixing the starter, I grabbed the new can and opened it up. The gooey oil was soothing on the open wound and once everything was covered, it felt great. Luckily it was still hot summer T-shirt weather and standing around with a sleeve rolled up, I was able to help get the motor started again. Now, I was walking around with my right sleeve rolled up to the shoulder and the large wound was fully exposed, but covered with STP oil.

Those that walked by our pit area wondered why I had oil on my exposed arm. As soon as they saw it closer, they walked away fast.

Now, I was able to walk up to the starting line as my brother was in the final staging for our willys coupe. Yes, I got tons of stares and at first, it must have looked like those guys in the cigarette ads with their sleeves rolled up. But, then they all saw the large wound underneath.

    Note:

On Monday morning, I went to our family doctor. When he saw the wound, which still had STP oil on it, he asked what I did to deserve the layer of oil… Ha! But, as he gently took off the oil, kept saying the wound looked great and undisturbed. No infection or additional injury to the large wound surface. The oil did what it was supposed to do even if it was not the “official burn salve ointment” normally applied to such wounds. He said I was a good medic to treat the wound like I did. But, he said to come to him at the time of any injuries the next time.

I drove home with a burn ointment and a gauze pad which I changed for the rest of the week. By next Saturday, I was well and walking around with my t-shirt rolled down to cover some of the bandage. It was one of those marks that healed, but constantly reminded me of the incident as it left a scar on my bicep. So, 65 years later, is is a shadow of itself and is fading away... YRMV

The best is when you’re cut and bleeding and didn’t notice and then wonder what all that red stuff is on whatever you’re working on. lol!

IMG_3120.jpeg I’m not that accident prone but I have had my moments from swapping engines to welding chassis and everything in between. I am going to wait until I swap out the water pumps on my woodie today before I contribute to this thread, somehow I can see where there is a chance for some serious carnage I can share with you guys….

  13. Bad cuts.. you have to decide whether or not to hit the ER .. or KEEP WORKING!

Usually the decision criteria is, can I stop the bleeding? Paper towels and electrical tape to the rescue. REAL bad cuts, use those blue paper towels.

If it's not mine until I bleed on it,..................I have established ownership of a LOT of stuff. Wonder if the license bureau would accept that as proof of ownership ? :D
