Drive it now, carry stuff in it, enjoy it and see if ya still wanna chop it later.
Meantime, that coupe looks chopped and dropped enough for both.

That truck is all there. Get it running and enjoy it. If you want a bobber truck, there's plenty of cabs out there that are orphans. Get another cab for the bobber and get this one on the road. Too nice to chop up at this point. Just my 2 cents ......

    +1 get it running

+100000000000 kill all the damn black widows!

Bit of trivia for ya's: Daddy Long legs are actually more venemous than a Black Widow, but they can't open their mouths enough to bite us!

I agree with most others above-- this one is too complete to turn into a bobber. Get it running, lower it a bit and enjoy. If you want a bobber, start with an orphan cab. Good luck with your projects.

Lots and lots of engines had no oil filter all the way up to the mid 50's... not weird at all.

These guys all agree that bobber trucks are the coolest, and you should definitely build one.

Hows the rest of the truck? Brakes, suspension, drive line? If they're ok, I'd leave it alone for awhile and drive it. If not just fix enough to make it safe and reliable and live with it for a while as an old truck, I think it might grow on you. I don't know if you've ever had an old truck, but they're NOT boring, they have a soul all there own, and they sort of become like an old friend after a while. I even like the patina (ya, I said patina) on that one.

HUH??? If I couldn't chop that truck in a weekend, I'd hang up my sawsall and take up golf!
But as I said earlier, I would leave it alone.

drop it to the ground..(or close) dont chop it..like fab32 said put a wedge deck on it and use it as a Hot Rod Hauler...sweet.
oh and pull it in the shop and light off a bunch of bug bombs before you do anything else with it.
if that things been in your shop..your shop now has Black Widows in it.

One more thing. Put a 12 volt battery in it and a 12V 1 wire alternator and drive it. Unhook the 6V gauges and use a set of mechanicals for the time being. 6V starters are wound twice as heavy as 12V so your not going to hurt it.
I've been running my grandfathers 1948 8n Ford tractor on 12 volts for over 25 years, Just put a volt-a -drop in the wire going to the coil. The battery needs charging a couple of times a year as the 6V generator won't fully charge the 12 V battery. Just one thing you won't have to change when the 426 Hemi goes in.:D

I purchased a 41 just like this one from a guy who was going to improve on his drivable pick up,it never ran again,he lost intrest and I got it in a hundred pieces.i think i would tinker on it as is.

  18. Dont make a 'bobber turck' out of that, its too cool to waste. Lower, chop and drive the shit out of it every day.

Oil filters were still an "option" then. My '56 Mopar flathead didn't have one on the donor vehicle I got it from either. Yes, it's positive ground. 6V systems work okay if everything's right. But since it needs rewired anyway... And since Mopars became 12V in '56, 12V starters and generators are easily available for these. I love these engines. I don't think I've ever heard a smoother running inline six. New speed parts are available as well as vintage stuff like the waycool Tattersfield dual intake I found for mine.

Thanks for the beer through the nose! :D

I'd get her running personally. It's still complete and I think it would be senseless to chop it.

If you are looking for 12V parts for the car... look up Vintage Power Wagons on Google and they will have what you are looking for.

If you've never owned or driven an old beater pick up truck, get it running and safe and have a ball. You can haul stuff in it. Relax and let the pressures of the world fade away as you put around town with out worries about door dings and such.

To me there is something about a beater PU that just stirs those basic masculine juices. Tough and not pretty.

    Try it you'll like it.

  25. those old flatty 6's will wake right up 9 times outta 10...my 54 dodge panel does very well except for on the steepest of inclines here in SoCal...that is a cool body style...after you get her running I would drop here a few inches and call it good...it'll look like a freight train in some little rice rocket's rear view mirror...after the flatty 6 gets tired then you can start having some fun with drivetrain options...

    coming soon: rodtees.com

  26. Nobody said to restore it.

That thing has a ton of character; I'd leave it alone for the most part. I love the mirrors, the cowl lights (turn signals?), 6 Volt (foot starter?), the hood latches(?), and original paint(?). Does it have one taillight?

Are those toilet paper oil filters worth a wipe?

    Thanks,
    Kurt

    red top
    carb kit

gotta love having year make and model for the auto parts guys :D

I did have to take a bath on an 80.00 6 volt bat:mad: though. If anyone is looking for one, I sell it for 40.00 BRAND NEW

    Were it mine, I would..

get it running reliably, driving and registered, then take six inches out of the top, and carefully fade the paint back in..

Dont lower it, or do anything else..

the reasoning is, if you look at the painted advertising posters done during the period this thing was built, they are always drawn from a dramatic low angle, accentuating the size of the tyres and height of the vehicle, and the cab is diminished, making it look rakish and chopped, I would love to see a truck done this way, as a homage to the amazing illustrations of the late fourties /early fifties.
does anyone understand what im on about here, or am i nuts?

this is the kind of thing im going for on my 32 truck, heavy chop, no channel, not low, and a full length bed. in other words a standard looking truck with a heavy chop, and no other obvious hot rod 'pointers'

Im hoping this becomes something of a new thing to take over from fucking bobber trucks..but then again im also hoping not. :)
