I've never been known for my luck unless you count the bad... but I finally had some good luck. I've been looking for a good Ford FE core motor and suddenly everyone thinks they're worth big money. The few decent deals I found were either too far away, had flakes that don't answer ads, or sold so fast that I missed out. But I finally lucked out... One of my car club members is moving to Arizona, sold his house and property here. He had a 40 year collection of 'stuff' and put his oldest kid in charge of cleaning it up while he was down south. The kid is just sending stuff to the s****yard indiscriminately. Anyway, the owner returned from Arizona to pick up some stuff and check progress and I mentioned my quest. He says 'I had eight of 'em, the kid already offed six of 'em but there's two left he hasn't found yet. How about $20 each?' and I said I'll be over tomorrow! To the best of his knowledge one is a 360, the other is a 390. I'll find out when I open 'em up... Took all afternoon to dig them out and get them in my truck, but seeing how our aggregate ages add up to 150 I figured we did ok... LOLOL.. Also found two jewels mixed in the garbage... I've been half-heartedly looking for a heater for my avatar, stumbled on these and he said 'take 'em, the kid will just pitch 'em'. The left one is an Allstate, no name on the right one. Other than surface rust both look good. Wooo Hoooo! And if anyone is interested, he mentioned having a NOS set of 'cruiser skirts' he bought for a '57 Ford that's now gone. He didn't mention price and won't be here long, PM me if anybody is interested. Sometimes even the old squirrel finds nuts... LOLOL
I posted a Lane Anderson Tech Article from Rodders Digest on upgrading those heaters here a couple times.
Tman, could you please put in a link to that thread? Sent from my SM-G965U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Your heater on the right is a Firestone. Some are marked, some not. Studebaker used them, as well as after market. I have one in my truck. I had Br*** Works make a new core for it. https://thebr***works.net/collections/heater-cores/products/studebaker-1940-champion-heater-core
Maybe, but seems his dad is fine with it. Could be one of those “has to be gone by **x” and no time to figure pricing and waiting on buyers, h***ling, etc. The son may not have the room or the time to take it all home and store it until sold. Or, he doesn’t have a clue
There's a family dynamic issue involved... The owner is 80 years old, I've known him for about 10 years and this is the happiest I've ever seen him. Yeah, I have no doubt a bunch of good parts have vanished but if he's happy, I'm happy for him.
When I worked for a dealership we traded for a farm truck with a 360 that had a rod knock. We dropped the pan, pulled the crank and it couldn't be saved. We got a replacement from NAPA. I think we may have changed 1 rod. The mechanic put is back together and started it then he called me back to look at it. When started it sounded like a diesel with the typical diesel clatter. He asked if it was possible that they gave us a 390 crankshaft. I didn't think it would actually turn over with a 390 crank in it. I was wrong. Pulled a head to verify the stroke because NAPA said it couldn't possibly run with a 390 crank. They were wrong also. They supplied the correct crankshaft and paid the labor to change it out.
