thank you very much, i didnt realize how big a cam this thing has. shakes the whole dam car, of course it is just running out of the headers right now. I gotta get my driveshaft cut down before i can drive it. and my seats will be done next week.
You're nuts, cars aren't supposed to run...I mean if they were, why would I take mine apart constantly? Seriously though, good deal! Sounds healthy
well it was alive until i started it for the second time today and antifreeze came pouring out of my exhaust. good times huh. Im officially done with this car. anyone want parts before i push it off the cliff?
Sounds like the hear gasket let loose or a cracked head . Pull the header on the side in question and do a pressure test to see where the problem is . You can also check the spark plugs and check yo see if one is way too clean . Pull the oil stick and look at the oil and also look for water droplets on the oil stick . When you rebuilt your engine , did you have the heads re surfaced ? If not that is probably the problem . If you do one , make sure you do the other one also . That won't be much money to have that done either . Just a pain in the *** but better now than when you go on a long cruise one hot day ! Jim

I wished you lived closer to me . i would gladly fix it for you and then you can do some ink work for me as well ! Don't laugh , I traded an 460 engine that I traded some things for , then turned around 6 months later and traded it to a tattoo shop owner because he wanted a 460 for his Mustang . So I traded it for a colored old skool Flame tattoo on my right are . It goes from my elbow down to my wrist all the way around my arm . A lady that worked for him did the flames free hand with a marker on my arm and after we got it the way I wanted it she started doing the ink work . I have no money in that tattoo at all ! Now on my left arm I do have a very nice tattoo on my for arm from my elbow to my wrist . I paid for that one and that was my very first tattoo . So I had the space from my inside open from my wrist to my inner arm at the elbow . So I have a C6 still attached to the 460 that the owner hasn't picked up yet . So I told him I wanted some lettering done on the inside of my for arm . I told him I would give him the trans and all the other parts to the engine , starter and all for the lettering . So I had that done for me for nothing too . I barter all the time for stuff so you never know what I will come home with for getting ride of or getting car parts for . Now I have a 429/460 Mallory uni-Lite dizzy to get rid of so I am going back to the owner of the tattoo shop to see if he can use the distributor . If so I will be getting another tattoo on my left upper 1/2 of my are . I want a Ford Crest and the work FORD under it with some bent & twisted pistons and rods crossing each other under the "D" in FORD . I really love to bater for parts and my engine building services all I can to get the things I need or want . When you can get all this and pay nothing , doesn't get any better than that ! So if someone close to me needs some work , let me know what you have to barter with . Jim
I can understand your disappointment and frustration mr h, been there. That is sometimes unfortunately the "fun" of working on these old crocks. I am sure you will get help and support from this group to pull you through. Hang in there and keep us posted. Good Luck.
we checked the torque and it was good, guess we are going to rip apart 5 months of work, oh and the guy that built the engine wont return my calls of course.
i just talked to the guy that built the motor, he said it was professionally machined and was not cracked or warped. It does have the stepped bolts, but he did say that it has 302 gaskets not 351. of course he is saying that its my fault cause when he gave it to us he marked the firing order, but it was wrong cause the cam made it a 351 firing order so he is saying if we tried to start it with the 302 order we could have blown the head gasket. i call bs there. anyway no i know i need to get a 351 gasket set and tear into this son of a *****.
One other thing to check, when I put my 302 together I used 1965 Mustang Hi-Po heads the gasket set came with two sets of intake gaskets one is for 65-69 and has small water p***ages,70 & later have large water p***ages, since your block is using a 351W head(reason for step down spacers) it should use the large p***age gasket.Did the builder supply you with the cam card and part number so you can verify the firing order? 5.0 H.O. motors use the 351W firing order,it is not uncommon in SBF builds to convert the older 289-302's to the 351W firing order by using a 351W cam,Fords reasoning for the firing order change is supposedly to relieve front main bearing stress in Hi-Po apps.
Sorry don't travel but wish you lived closer I would have fixed it today for you ! If you do need help to do the work yourself I can walk you through the entire process and you can have it done in a day or less time as long as the heads are good . I don't know your mechanical skills so that is why I am offering the help . IT really ****s but do you know where the guy lives ? If you do pay him a visit and send a friend up to the door with a pizza box or something like looking for directions or put the hood up on his car and ask for help . That way you can get him face to face . Small claims court works very well also ! You paid for a job that wasn't done right . I would expect if I had a customer that had the same problem , I would be right over to their house fixing the problem right away . I stand behind all my work ! Let me know if you need a walk through on what to do and I will be glad to do that fr you . If the gaskets look good and installed properly then your heads are either cracked or need resurfaced . That means he did a ****ty 1/2 *** valve job . When my machinist does a valve job the valves get a 3 angle valve job , pressure checked for leaks and resurfaced . NO if , and , or buts , it gets done right or I won't do the job . I don't know what you paid to have your engine rebuilt but should have been in the $2500 to $2900 depending on the pistons that are used if replaced along with rods , intake , distributor and any fancy add ons you put on your engine to look good . BTW that 270 Comp came is a power house after about 2000 rpm's and pulls like a freight train . I did a 65 Mustang 289 last year with one and you played hell to catch me on a straight away ! Let me know I am here most all the time . I don't work . Hope I can help . Here is my home email if you need anything or any questions answered or want to send some pictures . jims55hotrod@comcast.net This address is open for anyone that needs to ask a question or needs help with their engine or car ! I really don't mind helping out a friend in meed ! Sorry to see your problems like that after you paid someone to do it right . That's what makes it bad for the rest of us that do that kind of work . Jim
ok so its not what i thought it was. an old man next door had seen us trying to run water lines and said that the port on the back of the intake manifold was a water jacket. turns out its not, so i was sending water into the intake manifold. problem solved. dont trust thy neighbor.
well thats what i dont get, he rebuilds mustangs next door, nice ones. he said that any rpm intake manifold he has seen had a water jacket port on the rear. well this is an air gap rpm intake, anyway he was really sorry and all it cost me was oil and filter and a few days worth of m***ive stress. but we fixed it and started it and no water came out. now all i gotta do is get the thing timed and the exhaust hooked up.
Glad to hear it worked out! I know the stress- took my Ford outta storage yesterday with plans to drive it today and it wouldn't start today. I asked Eric (Missy'sDad) for some advice, and God willing and the creek don't rise, I'll figure it out tomorrow.
grtting the car back tomorrow, had some starter, carb, timing issues. turns out my torque converter was not stabbed correctly and my flywheel was warped, i had some vac*** lines in the wrong spot, its timed and supposedly running smoothly now.
