My orginal plan was for flat/satin black with red skallops, lake pipes fender skirts and shaved handles. Lurking here has taught me that flat black is just overdone and dead.
So I ask/beg for some color combos. My interior was just redone in bright red with black carpet. I can not change it right now. Lake pipes and skirts also stay. And last this is my first paint job. This is going on a 62 Chevy II moordoor.

I dont want to be like all the other flat black assholes. I need color now.

Damn it :) Oh yea im color blind too.. so its a little harder for me to match colors.

Small budget, lack of knowledge. If would have found this place sooner it be an different story. This is also my first attempt at this. So im screwed every which way. But I'll figure it out with lots of help. and move on to the next project when I get this thing done. Just need to go back another 30 years.

Does it go AND stop? Those are your first concerns. Can you frost a cake before it is baked? Nads frosts his hair while he's baked...

Get the car up to snuff first, then worry about the rockasilly shit...

What was the car's original color?? Go with that and silver 'flake for the roof... have you seen lownslow's Olds??

Actually you said you had a bright red interior and black carpet, yeah?? So maybe just give her a nice black paint job, slam her, and put some Astro Supremes on 'er... that car's never going to be a true kustom, but you can still make her cool!

Or you could just sell it and buy a car that'll take to the "kustom" treatment a lot more easily...

Shiny black Centauri acrylic enamel, color sanded and buffed, will go with that red interior like rum and coke and/or sex and drugs. Traditional flames on the black always dress up the old Mordor also.

You could still have it shinny black and a silver/grey flake roof, and some chrome wheels or black steelies with trim rings. Just think about it looking nice and not flat and faded. I like the chevy 2's I dont care what they say thats a cool little car in my book.

Shiny gray like on '57 Fords or 2005 Eclipse.
In otherwords some gray that's available and your paint guy doesn't have to search too hard for a formula code.
If you want two tone it, use a red that matches or at least doesn't clash with the red in the upholstery.

Flat is a pain in the ass in the long run, because you can't polish out the damp spots from all the chicks sitting on your fenders... :D

Yea it runs perfect, not sure why that matters. Im trying to avoid the rockasilly shit.

The car was tuxedo black and repainted white by the previous owner.
I thought about 2 toning it with bare metal. but I guess that would be just as bad as flat black.

I know Ive back myself in a strange place with my car choice. So I need to work my way out now. Selling isnt an option until its done somehow. But at least I know enough to ask for opinions here before I make it worse. Just dont think Im going with Avacado, with Pink scallops. thanks tho Unkl.

Black with a silver flake sounds cool tho.

  15. my question is why your supposedly 'stuck' with a faux sled.

why not ditch the skirts and lakes, drop it four inches and put some racy looking wheels on it? put some flow masters on it and a tach, paint it and sell it. it's more sellable if its dressed appropriately (IMHO)
if you HAVE to make it a Kustom then go for it, but me thinks you'd be better off in another direction....

    just my 2 cents....

I agree with most everything said above.
Loose the skirts and lake pipes, lower it and put on set of chrome wheels. Smoothies, Cragers, Astros. A '60's car gives you a lot of options. I'm afraid trying to make it a '50s custom is just not going to look good. The '60s had some great looks. Look through some car mags from that era, you'll get some good ideas. Flaking the roof could be cool for a nice custom look, and again. very '60s.
Take a good side shot photo of the car (with the least amount of stuff in the background), post it on here for some ideas. Let a few people photoshop it.
This could be a good look for a 4 dr. Add some scallops or a wild pinstripe job.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I was kinda stuck in the 50's. I going to look for a better choice of color. 2toning is something I wanted before I got sucked into the 50's thing with the satin black. The car is actually 2 toned primered. I think thats why I started this post.
I can play with photoshop tomorrow and come up with some ideas.
Right now Im leaning toward Black with dark grey roof or Dark Grey with a silver roof. The red interior is really jamming me up.
How bad would a red roof look? With black or dark grey.

I know its my car, but I really am thankful for getting straighten out here.
Skirts will prolly stay. Lowering was part of the plan, Not sure about 4 inches but I will keep it in mind. Laker pipes are now very optional.

I'd have to say a good siver and red is on of my favorite color combos, its not real "trad" but the two set each other off so well, I think maybe its the contrast or maybe I just have no style. But if its got red guts already, silver's the way to go. maybe do somthing like some charcoal on the roof but a just as a nice panel job over the silver. Just my .02c

Here's a 2-tone one. I don't know if they came this way from the factory but it sure looks right on this car. Nice trim. You could definetly do a light/dark silver combo, which would be fine with the red interior.

How about shiny white, red roof, leave all the factory trim attached and something like chrome reverse wheels? No lakes pipes and no white walls.

Thanks that will be helpful, which CO should I go with for the mural on the trunk?

I should be able to throw up some photoshop ideas tomorrow. I got some brewing. Met Dark Grey for the body. The roof I need to check out 3 colors. Red silver and black.

I'd paint it all gloss black, leave all the stock trim if it hasn't already been shaved. Maybe just shave the back door handles if you shave anything. Ditch the lakepipes and dummy spots. Throw a set of 15x6 black steel rims with factory dog dish hubcaps. Just my opinion, I guess I like these cars kind of stock looking.

The two tone reminds me of the Chevy II convertable that was at paso last year. It is painted to look like a 57 bel air. Even had bel air logos painted on it. It made me sad.

I thought of a BelAir when I saw that too.

Im just gonna go with a two tone on the roof, maybe the trunk lid.

    I'd do a nice Red Paintjob -
THEN! get some pinstriping done on the hood and trunk - in JUST BLACK. (unless the guy you get to stripe it comes up with a 2nd color to add that would kick ass.)

Skirts and lake pipes look stupid on a nova. End of story. You listened to us about the flat black... don't fail us on this little detail.

If you want to make it cool, then read up on the 60s style customs and the bellflower thread. That is your only hope.

I will say I saw a kid (with rich parent's) take a 67 4 door and made it a mild pro touring car and it looked pretty good.

I agree - flake it in candy red or silver - given you want to keep the pipes and skirts and you have red inside , you need one colour or you will end up with too much going on on the car,but a flake job will give it that added custom touch to equal the skirts and pipes

+ there simply are not enough flaked cars in the world...we need at least one more

Well my car is flat black so I guess that makes me an asshole. Just wonder what I would be if I had a 60's fourdoor with skirts and lakepipes?
    Have a wonderful day.
