On April 26th we loaded up the A and headed for Dover. Our aim to visit and hopefully participate in http://www.liberationfestival.com/ Here's a few pictures from our travels... Arrived in Dover. First stop Gent in Belgium. Then onto Frankfurt, but first through the Ardennes. A quick bite to eat and a beer is Frankfurt (Vegetarians look away). The Nurburgring Then into the Czech Republic. First stop Cheb. The view from our tent. I actually serviced the A here, engine oil changed as instructed by Mr Froch. More food...beer... Clear and cobbled roads (we'd collected a few flies and things by now).
Arrived in Pilsen (Plzen). ... and went to the US Camp to catch up with a few friends. The other flathead. The Liberation Festival. Each day we headed out to a different town / village in a convoy, where we took part in a remembrance ceremony and celebration of freedom. The first day was just over 100 km's on dirt tracks and byways. We headed for Hostoun, Rosendorf and Bela nad Radbuzou, and met the US Second Cavalry. The full story behind the memorial can be found here http://www.stripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=36364 (I know its' from 2006 - but we did meet Mr Toole this year). http://www.historynet.com/patton-rescues-the-lipizzaner-stallions.htm
Day two. The Russians arrive in Rokycany. The parade through Pilsen on Sunday. Shermans in the Main Square. It's all a bit too much for some. Freedom street. An Evening in the US Camp. Live Music. When you see Gill ask her about the home distilled Plumb Vodka. Mas Chas? The return journey. How far is it to London? We headed back into Germany and stopped in Furth.
The next morning it was raining and didn't stop for the 300 miles we traveled West then North. There was some tight bends traveling up through Luxembourg. Stopped over night in Marche-en-Famenne in Belgium about 30 miles North of Bastogne. Then onto Dunkirk and the ferry. Then home. In all we covered 2122 miles mainly on side roads, through six countries. Again a big thank you to, Adrian and Drew for the ch***is work.
Great adventure. I lived in Fuerth from 1960-1964 while my Dad was stationed there in the Us Army. It is a suburb of Nuernberg.
