Ok all of you PC cars folks, why has a hot rod motor been called a 'mill' for 50 years? This I would like to know.

BTW, don't go slammin' on our King Richard Petty....:D He's the only monarch the US has ever had...;)

Hey, this was a great way to "blow" lunch!

Time to go and bolt the front pullys on my mill! (flathead of course)

  5. On my next trip to the Indianapolis Engine Speedway I'll be passing through Detroit, "the Engine City" ! :D

  6. Yeah... mill is much easier to say than motor...
You don't even have to move your lips... comes in handy in these temps.

Just another reason when searching on ebay you have to do it both ways 'model A engine' and 'model A motor' to get the full inventory. When a seller misspells it like 'model A moter', for instance, you know you've got yourself a good deal coming your way-happens all the time.Hope ebay doesn't adopt a spell checker program cause i've saved a lot of money because of this so far. No matter what, there's always more than one name given to anything.

I suspect this may be the origin of the term. I think Mercedes-Benz had the first automobile. It was powered by a "motor" (since there is no distinction between them in German). That lead to motor carriages and then motor cars/cycles. In this application (not in the study of the language where the difference does matter due to definition), the term is, for all intents and purposes, in fact interchangeable to nearly everyone, except those that don't have more importent things to concern themselves with. :p

  12. Will you be on a Harley-Davidson enginecycle? Hey, Ace of Spades by Enginehead is some good cruising tunes.

I have a few cars in my driveway.

One has a engine, transmission, driveshaft, carburetor, trunk, hood, windshield, turn signals, shock absorbers, runs on gas and needs wrenches to repair.

The other has a engine, gearbox, propeller shaft, caburettors, boot, bonnet, windscreen, trafficators, dampers, runs on petrol and needs spanners to repair.

BTW, extra points of anyone can tell me where "nave plates" are attached to the car.

Is that really all you have to do in your life? I worked for over thirty years on the MOTOR line at Ford. I own a fleathead and a Y block. Both are fun motors to play with. Each is an exciting engine to play with. The terms are interchangable.

Okay, has anyone, ever, in any English speaking country, put an engine in a motor bay?

Never seen a jet motor before.

So if internal combustion engines can be called engines or motors, why aren't there more electric engines out there?

    Or steam motors.

  18. Well then I have been putting the wrong stuff in my "crankcase" for the past 20+ years. Apparantly I have been putting "MOTOR OIL" in my "ENGINE". When was the last time you checked the motor oil in your heater fan?

Someone need to invent some "ENGINE OIL".

Actually, in the whole scheme of things what difference does it make. Look at some of the stupid language the younger generation is using today. I don't think they even know what it all means .....but they think it's KOOL to say, eh?
I think some of you guys have a little to much free time on your hands. Ok, I fuelled the fire, now get to hammerin'.

Oh.. I thought you were implying to break the thread by dicussing 'bonnet' over 'hood' or 'trunk' over 'boot' when you mentioned the word 'English' with a capital. nevermind. Hee hee

Not really, there are many hundreds of euphamisms for the labia and vaginal canal, all of which can be used, except when being scientifically correct (or in the prescence of women) and all of which can be understood by laymen (no pun intended) and non-professionals alike
For example it would be entirely inapt to say to the doctor, "say buddy, man to man, I know you did an episiotomy on my wife to help deliver the baby, you think you could put an extra two or three stitches in her vertical bacon sandwich for me? I mean I'll slip you a couple bucks."
But it would be OK to ask him to "tighten up my wife's vaginal opening because multiple births have left it quite stretched out."

Whereas motor and engine can be used in virtually any situation, inoffensively I might add, and be synonyms to all but the most tight assed of time wasters on the internet who worry about such minutae and lose sleep over it

much like "skull", "head", "noggin" or "beej"

all mean the same, but are easily vocalised, and accepted in common usage.

tell me, who in thier right mind could ever be offended by having a woman bob for your lap apples

I think it is a regional thing. We call em motors around here.

I have noticed a lot of ya'll yanks call pickup beds "BOXES". They are beds cause you can sleep in em at the lake.....
