Its gettin' hot in here, who will admit to puttin in A/C?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by realfastbug, Jun 17, 2008.

  1. I think that the Jeep units that are easy to work with are from the CJ, basically an underdash unit, a bit wide yet slim. Another junk yard source would be the rear air from an old Suburban, at least up to '91, pull all that plastic from overhead and low and behold; a danged MarkIV with no face plate(you know, the shiny part with the directional vents), no problem for an underseat or who knows? Best part is; it even has the expansion valve! Hope this helps,,,,,,,,LEE

I recently ordered a Vintage air set up from Kikin...

I hit everything I could, Hoses, drier, controls, vents and mounted the comp as low as I could....took a long time to hide everything, seeing as I just sectioned the truck and still have rust repair to do I havent had the joys of even driving the truck let alone driving it with A/C...I like many others couldnt last another Florida summer (heat with humidity...)

I must be gettin old....I just got A/C for the garage too

    .

I don't have it in my 58 apache, but I do in my 64 Thunderbird.

I live in Miami, no one calls you a puss for running AC here.

  4. Figures, the Suburban I s****ped in the spring had a rear air unit in it. Looked like the lines had been cut for a while, but it was all there. It was in there when it went into the yard -

Nothing to admit... I love a/c and put it in all of my cars. There is nothing noble or ******** about being hot for no good reason. Guess what, I've got a/c and heat in my house too. :D

My 64 Cehvy panel came with a Vintage Air GenII Super under dash unit in it. Its a little big and hangs down some, but thats fine. I'm adding the compressor and ducts and such later this month. Will take some pics.

  6. A/C IS KOOL!.......living in Arizona,I wouldnt have a car with-out it,hell even some of the roadsters here have it...........I really like the units from hotrod air small and fits where most stock heaters mounted........

  7. Me too. Now I can pull my driver in there and work in the A/C while I fix the damn A/C in the car! Even at 70MPH with the windows down, I have to change clothes when I get home because they are soaked. I know it's "traditional" to rip out anything on a hot rod that doesn't make it faster, but what about customs? A/C has been fairly common in cars since the 50s, did many 50s-60s customs have A/C?

I have had A/C in my garage for about 5 years, now. I get alot more accomplished out there with the A/C. Sometimes, I wouldn't even consider working in the garage it's so damn hot. God bless you Mr Carrier!!!

Wow, the decadence of AC in the garage!!!!

I've had fantasies of putting a swap cooler in there, you know, baby steps ;-)

On the way home from work today I was having fantasies about what it'd be like to have A/C in the car...hopefully sooner than later!

heck, air is good even in Canada! I've got the drier in the trunk of the '32, and using reduced diameter hose. I think the #10 hose is only 3/4" OD. The Vintage Air Compac fits under the dash, and you can't see it unless you bend down.

In your 58 Chevy try Cl***ic AutoAir out of Texas. They have a direct fit unit. For your vents, get a re-pop or old style tissue dispenser and hinge the front and use that to mount your vents. The front of the dispenser to hide them when not in use.Also.it swivels so you can direct the air.In my 31 Ford I mounted the compressor on the fuel pump boss and used an electric fuel pump.It is almost out of sight.

  18. Just wondering....why wouldn't anyone own up to having ac? My old Fairlane wagon had it...from the factory/dealer. My Econoline had a dealer type one installed at some point before I got it.

  19. Because that is one of the first thing hot rodders usuallly yank out.

  20. BUT....a '58 Belair ISN'T a hotrod, it's a custom. Customs are inclined to be luxurious, not stripped down. ;)

No A/C in my 55 Chieftain. I put down 4 big windows and open the vent windows up to blow the wind right on me.
If I get hot I drive faster...
I have air in my 30 Sedan, but it was put there before i got it. I don't use it; I crank open the windshield.
And I'm in Florida where it's ungodly hot and humid.

My 59 buick has factory air that I am getting to work right. It's a luxury liner so I will use it.

Damn right I'll put air conditioning in the '48! I put up with no air as a kid; I sure as hell won't build a coupe rod without it! The '48 has fixed rear windows, so you bet it's getting air!

Bringing this one back from the dead, its getting to be that time of year. I got super lucky and found a factory AC box with high output blower for my plymouth, i intend to use a sanden and rig it up with the factory controls. Great thread!

Vintage not my first choice. Their Sure Fit Units don't Sure Fit well. Vents are junk, Chinese parts and small coils. Check out Old Air units, neater, easier installation and larger coils. Not to mention two VA units I installed that had to be removed and returned for water leaks.

I live in Denver and 2 years ago installed a Southern Air unit in my custom.Works good ,like the heater for winter driving but after dropping a grand and cluttering up everything I realized that I hardly ever use the A/C. ( I like the windows open when cruzin.) Heck we went to Salina Kansas leadsled show in 100 plus heat and didn't even bother to use it. If you insulate the car good like the roof ,doors ,floors and firewall it makes a differance . I don't think I would do it again ,could of used the $ for something else like a nice set of wide white wall tires,LOL.
