Put it in his drive way and walk away. It's not your car, but nor should the problems that are orruring because of it. If you sell it, he could and probably would sue you. Personally I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole!

I had a friend ask me if he could park his truck at my shop. I said no, I had too much **** in my parking lot already. He brought it over anyway. And I brought it back the next day.

I agree with everyone who said, just load it up and drop it off at his house. Done. No need to get the police or DMV involved in any of this.

  7. Personally, I'd see what the damn thing might bring money-wise on eBay or elsewhere and let that be my guide. If I could flip it for a couple grand to someone with a hardon for Ford Capris, then I'd make the steps to get legal ownership on it. If it's not worth a ****, then drop it in his driveway. Letting the city take it seems to me to be a guarantee the thing will get s****ped, because most people will just see an old, rusty, ****ty car. Even some of the posters here see that. It's not a car I particularly care about, but I'm sure there are people who like them. Those things certainly don't grow on trees, if they're like any other Euro car, the ones in the salt climates long since rusted all the way to the bottom of the roof posts. Not that there was that many in the US to begin with.

Part of the problem is we don't know what's going on with your *****whipped friend, other than he needs his wifes' permission for too many things. It probably would be wise to make sure he's not dead or in the hospital or some other thing before doing anything rash.

And I would make the steps to see if I could be covered with the zoning, anyways, was it me - in case I wanted to keep a car of my own back there. It's not like the place looks like a junkyard or something, and it would be good to know the law regardless.

rent a place for his car, when he comes around tell him to pay up, or your going to keep his car. that way you did what you could so he could keep it. then if he wont, or cant pay, your really just paying storage on your new car.

How do you sell a car you don't own? When does it become stealing in your state?

tow it to his house. amazing how many guys here would rip thier friend off. if they would sell his car i'm sure they would keep a little money for thier trouble. if you just cant get ahold of him maybe he's dead or somethings wrong with family.

I have to agree with Bruce Lancaster. Haul it over and stick it in his driveway and be done with it. If you have a copy of the letter from the city leave it with it so he and his wife know what went on.

It's been my experience that inspectors never show up unless someone has raised a fuss and gets them sent there. Or if you have them out for an inspecton for something unrelated to cars in the yard and they take notice.

I hate to see this stuff. Unfortunately I've recnetly had the experience of realizing some 'friends' of mine weren't the pals I thought they were, as real friends don't do that kinda ****. Seems like a similar situation.

You could tow it to his house, but now you're involving yourself in his wife/family/living situation/whatever drama.

Roll it to the curb and 'park it and call the city to pick up an abandoned car, cuz that's what it is. If YOU tow it, now you're liable for the consequences of damage while towing, what happens to it, etc. Call him and tell him the situation. Don't let yourself get dragged into this any further. This ain't your lookout.

If he's a real friend, and it sounds like he's not, then he'll understand you can't leave a junker at someones place for years and expect htem to take heat from the city for it. A reasonable person wouldn't do that.

For all of you guys suggesting he push it to the curb, drop it off at the ex-wife's house, have it hauled off, etc. you may not be aware of a principle of law called "Bailment". The principle of bailment basically means that if you willingly accept possesion of the property of others, then by doing so you are agreeing to take proper and due care of said property. This is most true and especially binding on shops and the automobiles they take in. Even if there were no repairs being done, he agreed to "store" the car and therefore clearly created a bailment whereby he is now responsible for the car. If the car is disposed of in any manner other than a legal abandonement action, he could be on the hook for the value of the car to his friend when and if he finally does show up to collect his car.

Bag on the car all you want, it's a beautiful design, not well built, Enfo's Edsel, but it is rare and worth saving, how many deuce's that were rotting into the ground have been saved? How about saving a Ford that's infininitely rarer?

    Best of luck BBobb.

I'm in Bruce's camp here also. Selling it of otherwise disposing of it is going to get you in a serious crack. If this guy is a really good friend why is he blowing you off?
    I like Bruce's quote!
"Some friendships are worth more than any car, some friendships aren't worth a dented hubcap. "

I got the impression that he has no way of knowing exactly where his "friend" is residing these days. So, dropping it off at a house he THINKS is his friends could be a problem as stated above. He would STILL need to PROVE that somebody received the car with his "friends" authority or he could STILL be in trouble. That's why every time you have a car towed there is a bill with Who, what and where on it.

  26. I agree with Fat141. Go to his house late at night or early (5:00 am) on a weekend morning, or in the middle of the night. I mean, it's like servin' a warrant on somebody. Does he still live there? I don't understand why you can't get a hold of him. What? You go there when you know they are there and they don't answer the door? Where does he work? Where does she work? Go there. I mean, if he's this much of a 20 year buddy and you can't run him down? Doesn't make sense to me. And from those pictures, hell there's all kinds of stuff layin' around back there. I can't believe that inspector would only pick on that one car. What's the real deal here?

Put up a no parking sign. Send him a certified letter that it is in a no parking zone and will be towed.

If he does not respond, then moved it, file a mechanics lean against it. and own it.

I am not saying be a complete **** to the guy...if he comes up with a good story...give it back....but if he doesn't.....well......you tried.

To be able to tow a car away from a "no parking" zone in most states you have to post the "no parking" sign BEFORE the people are parked there with the name and address of the towing company that will have it if it is removed. You guys have to understand that there are LAWS that govern these sorts of things. Do it wrong and you can be in a LOT more trouble than having the zoning guy on your ***.
