I seem to remember a Chief Sheldon, somewhere, sometime. It could be old age and senility setting in. I knew a few people who went through the Enterprise fire and saw the training films that showed it. Bad news! We had a bad engine room fire on the Kitty Hawk during the '65-'66 cruise. Scary! I'll PM you my real name. Also see www.vf-114.com

Did anyone ever hang out in Mom's bar in Olongapo City PI? They had a country music band there and it was VF-114's home. Good times and beer for all! :D

I was on the E when it blew up too.

There was a bar (how in the hell am I supposed to remember the name? I was shit-faced and it was 500 years ago) in Olongopo they had a band and all the guys were Philippinos (what else would they be?) They sang Black is Black, I want My Baby Back PERFECTLY. and couldn't speak one word of English. I was stunned. but then again, it didn't take much.

I think that bar was the Disco place that had the live gator/croc in a pool out front. I can't remember the name of the place. Mom's was strictly country. They also had some good bands in the enlisted club on base. The Filipino singers could imitate just about anybody.

I once ran into an ex sailor that got kicked out of the Nav and stayed in the Philippines after his discharge. He could sing exactly like Johnny Cash. He complained to me that his neighbor had eaten his pet dog. He found the bones out in the trash. Damn the bad luck!

That would probably have been John Wagner from Colorado, a crazy fucker. I sat on the wharf with him at North Island one Sunday afternoon and we consumed a quart of Tequila and then went drinking.

Everybody ate everybody's dog in the P.I.

As a parting shot, here's one of my favorite photos from back in the day; back when the only one we had to call the shots was a crooked Texas oilman. Things are much better now that we have two of them in charge.

That is where I went to Tech school There was a killer amount of static display aircraft there. Wonder what happened to all of it when they closed the base down. Gotta love them Allison Turbo props:)

Weird thing about this is that now I'm a Navy dependent. My wife is a 20 year Navy retiree, Senior Chief, airdale. Served on a carrier (I think the Nimitz) in the Gulf during the first Gulf War. One of the first women to do carrier duty, better not hear any smatass comment either.

Damn straight! As for the aircraft, some were dismantled and moved to other bases and the rest were moved to a hanger where they now have a museum.

    OldRacer,
Thank you for your service. Some people refer to your war as the forgotten war. Not in my house! I've read a lot about Chosen and the Korean War. You guys went through hell; but you responded with valor and bravery. Thank you for stopping the expansion of the Commie hoards.
