I've got a confusing flathead generator problem

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by alchemy, Jun 27, 2012.

  1. Try this there is a wealth of information on ths PDF. All regulators are basically the same in their function so you should be able to adapt any or all information from this instruction sheet.

WARNING: there is a lot of information to absorb.

Thanks again PnB. The two part Delco is GM only, but the three part Delco may be similar to the Ford style (Autolite). I'll print it out and read up to see if there's anything I missed.

  3. Not a problem.
Most of it is just electrical theory 101, its a lot like nutz and bolts only for electricity. :D

If a guy could cross-thread electricity, I must be that guy.

  5. I did strip a wire nut once. :D

Well...remember Delco has different grounding than Ford type, so using their tests directly can result in smoke.

It seems to me that the generator is working fine. It sounds like the VR is not regulating properly. I'd be trying a different VR.

I've got another NOS voltage regulator in a box that I can try.

There's another thread around right now talking about adding a shunt to the back of an ammeter. Making it yourself with a length of wire. I've seen factory-built shunted SW ammeters, but they are usually 60 amp gauges.

If I try to add a shunt to my gauge, does anybody know if that may fix the fidgety needle problem?

I'll try to follow that other thread too.

Fix the first problem first, because the fidgety needle may actually be accuratelty reporting glitchy ******** action in the regulator or some other issue of electrical... fidgeting!
