found nothing that resembles my starter dilemma. My '49 Ford has a SBC 327. Distributor w/built in coil. No regulator. I've tried all combos and I'm missing sumin'. Can one of you guys/gals tell me what goes where? Positive battery to Main terminal on solenoid ( check). Small ( 5 gage?) wire from ignition switch to "S" on solenoid ( check). Now I have two more wires, another coming from the Ignition switch ( 10 gage) and one coming from the under-dash voltmeter ( 10 gage). Where on the solenoid do these go? The car ran and started well, but when the ignition switch (10gage wire) found it way on to the exhaust manifold it's been a nightmare since. Don't make me drive the wife's Acura to the Round up! Thanks in advance.
Should have 2 wires on the Main (Big post) of the starter One from the Battery and one to the Ignition switch to feed power to the car. you should have one wire on the inside small post of the starter....that is your "start wire" - most Chevy's they were purple. That goes to the "start" function on your key switch. You Distributor should be getting power from the key switch in the on position & start position. Edit: You'll probably have to test the switch to see which post comes on for the "start & run" features of the switch...that should be your Dizzy Power. And the Post that comes on for the momentary "start" for the switch should go to the small inside post of the starter.
Even though the current drain is mimimal, the voltmeter shouldn't be connected to the main terminal on the starter where it would be reading all the time. Connect it to the accessory post on the ignition switch.
It just wont turn over? Have a friend turn key while you check which wire is hot when...must be the wrong wire on the solenoid or the wrong terminal on solenoid is being used. Run a wire from solenoid directly to bat+ to make sure that the solenoid works properly, and if so its just got to be the wrong wire or wrong terminal.
