Gene's signature on the gold dash may hint at a future Paint Date? Pretty personal...

I don't know about this particular truck but some show stoppers back in the day were meant for specifically shows. While their lines may have been aluring and their paint and interior cutting edge the construction techniques were far from robust, leading to rapid deterioration down the road. I've seen some pictures of older customs under restoration that revealed some really shoddy build techniques, even by some of the masters.

Again, I'm not dispariging this particular truck, which seems well built, just old customs in general, and why so few may have survived.

Interesting how so many feel compelled to share there opinions,.... and ignorance. Keith Biddlecombe is a friend of mine along with a bunch of other Canadians. Our group of Yanks and Canucks gather at least annually, somewhere between BC and SoCal to cruise, drink beer and talk stupid for the last 10 or so years. Keith has always lusted for that truck and was surprised to discover it a year ago in a private collection. He respects the history, has made contact with those early contributors who are still alive, and intends to carefully bring the truck along to a place that does not offend.

THANK YOU! I had no idea this truck made it to the East Coast, or did is stay in Dave Simard's shop in California? He has had a fair amount of luck finding Historic Hot Rods. Bob

The truck resurrection was debuted at the GNRS earlier in Feb and we were super pleased that Gene came over, remembered painting it 66 years ago in 1957, got inside it, and then graciously signed the dash. The Patina is staying for now as it represents the passage of time that the Kool truck endured. The goal was to go through the truck, make it road worthy without sacrificing the old school build components and to stay true as a tribute to Jack Calori and Joe Barnett. A lot of people including David Grant and Jim Aust, both of whom wrote stories of this truck were on hand at the GNRS and I had the pleasure of them telling me how they had met with Gene Winfield and Joe Barnett when they wrote their stories. David Simard who I purchased the truck from a year ago also came by and gave me a big smile and thumbs up for doing an awesome job with the Patina Restoration. I feel honoured to have been able to end up owning the truck, and all the history that it has. This one’s a KEEPER.

What a great save and story. I think it's in good hands. What a great and inspirational pick up!
