Everybody keeps telling the OP to get a bumper jack with a tab, that won’t work with his 1954 model car , as they don’t have the slot for the tab to go in. His jack is what will work with his car. That being said, I too prefer some type of floor jack. And never get under a car with any jack, unless you have supported it with jack stands. Bones
I have found that scissor jacks can also be fairly useless when used on uneven or soft ground (that's where you will usually have to change a wheel). I have a couple which I have made the footprint larger by welding a piece of 1/4" plate to the base plate, about 8" square, making them a bit more stable.
