I'm honestly not sure what year it was. It was a 535, I think a "I" or something. It would probably had been from the early 80's. The crossmember was a squarish tube that ran from rocker to rocker, and had large rubber bushings at the ends. It had a large C shaped bracket that went over top the diff, and held it in place. The trailing arms were large stamped sheetmetal pieces that were pretty wide, and it used fairly tall struts. I was able to bolt on GM 4 3/4 pattern aluminum wheels with no problems, to roll it around.

I don't have any pics of it, it was a long time ago. I was going to use it for a mid engined eldo powered truck project, but ran out of money and s****ped it. I can't seem to find any pics of anything like it on google either.

Any ideas of where to obtain a service manual for Jag IRS?

Try Amazon.com, surprising at times what they have in their used book department.

  7. This is a Volvo LSD rear end.
    Nice and tidy and compact.
    Plenty of these around.

I'm using one in my step van build.

Am I correct in ***uming that this Volvo IRS is sprung with a single transverse leaf spring???

  11. Yes and it's fibergl***.

I also have a Nissan van IFS that has a transverse spring.

Nothing wrong with them at all.

Don't try and compare them with '30's/'40's style springing.

Hey, it was good enough for Corvette IRS

  12. The '82-up XJS V12 cars all had the 2.88 gears, as did the V12 sedans, and yes, no other gear set will fit. The XJS (all years) and V12 sedans were all posi units though. The '75-80 (there was no '81 models) XJS V12 had either 3.03 or 3.31 gears. The 6 cylinder XJS cars had better ratios, but Jag only imported 50 of those into the US in the 80s, so forget about finding one of those here. They did go to 3.54 gears at the end of 90s production in the 6 cylinder XJSs, these also had the outboard brakes.

I also heard rumors of a ring gear spacer plate, but one never materialized. The other issue is Jag used 7/16" ring gear bolts with the 2.88s, the Dana uses 3/8". As to the axle shafts, Jag stuck with the 19-spline axles through the XJ40 at least. But the 19 spline are pretty tough; unless you're running a pretty brutal combination, breakage doesn't seem to be a big issue. It appears they'll live behind an automatic, but big power/manual trans combos can kill them. There's a guy in NZ that road-raced a turbo BBC/TH400 sedan combo with no failures, but another guy with a twin-turbo 383/TKO 5-speed XJS managed to shear one off.

My understanding (not personally verified) is the '75-80 XJS rears will accept Dana 44 ge****ts with machined spacers on the ring gear bolts. Another possibility is the new Jeep Rubicon Dana uses the larger 7/16" bolts so those sets may be a bolt-in to the early units if you swap to a Chevy driveshaft yoke (although I also heard there was 'hybrid' bolts to allow early Dana gears to fit the Rubicon diff, so that may be worth checking into). I haven't heard if the late 3.54 rears will accept other ratios,

You can also swap a 19 spline Dana 44 Diff into the Jag 'pumpkins' with the right bearings, that opens it up to any standard Dana gear set.

i have 3 xjs rears here right now. all post '86 v12 coupe and convertible donors and all 3 are 3.31:1 . the guy i get my donors from does nothing but xjs coupe/vert and he said almost all of the post '86s he has p*** through his yard are 3.31.....

i've seen the numbers everywhere online but i can tell you i saw 2 of the 3 donor cars for the rears i have so i know for sure what they came out of. i had been lead to beleive online that all of them were 2.88s only to get to his place and see 3.31s....
