Jalopy Jargon 101...class in session!

Spent some time this weekend in my folks' attic re-collecting some of my stuff from way back. One item is a paperback copy of 'Dragging and Driving' by Tom MacPherson (copyright 1960, 8th printing 1972, 60 cents), which includes an interesting appendix of "Dragging Jargon".

Some examples:

Bullnosing - Replacing hood ornaments with low, smooth metal strip. Strip maybe bought via mail order to fit practically any model car.

Deuce - A 1932 Ford. Often considered the ideal stock car for converting into a drag racer.

Diegoing - Replacing front axle with one especially designed to lower front of car

Dropping - Same as channeling

Fireplace - Front grill

Flame thrower - Souped up ignition system

Snowball - White-wall tire

Spaghetti - Too much chrome

Spooking - Just out for a drive; no particular destination

Squirrel - The type who guns his motor and burns his tires

Strides - Expendable pants or dungarees worn while doing the messy work of customizing

Tails - Fox or **** tails tied to vehicle

Thingie - Vehicle souped up for drag racing

Uncle Daniel - Same as a sleeper

... and now you know.

 

It's funny how slang changes over time. I'd say most of those are accurate as per the definition. The only one I think is way off is the "dropping". it says it's the same thing as channeling and we all know that's not true. dropping can be done with some blocks and a sawzall. channeling is a whole 'nother can of worms.

these terms are all very interesting. i've heard of the obvious ones(bullnosing, duece, dropping, snowball, squirrel,) but i wonder who the hell the real Uncle Daniel was? must have been a mellow looking cat who could really fly off the handle.

I got a kick out of 'Uncle Daniel', the fact that 'bullnosing' strips are available via mail order for most car models, and that 'deuces' were ideal for converting into drag racers. I'm also guessing that 'diegoing' is related to 'dago' axles...?

One thing I love about those old 50's/60's Hot Rod Movies is listening to them talk in slang. Almost like the old detective movies. A modern day version of that is a movie called "Brick".

Of course, I like that "rap ****' music too.

Haze the Hides: *To spin and smoke the rear tires

Huffer: *Supercharger

In the Weeds: *A really low vehicle or you have lost control of your ride and ended up in the ditch

Jimmy: *Acronym for a Blower or Supercharger*

Jug: *A carburetor

Juice: *Fuel, Electricity or hydraulic fluid

Kemp: * A rod with a customized body

Lean it Out: *To alter the fuel mixture to improve engine performance and use less fuel - done to extreme will *fry your engine

Locker: *A type of differential that helps prevent tire spin and distributes the engines torque evenly to the rear wheels

Loud Petal: *The accelerator petal

Louie: A left hand turn (see Roscoe)

Lowboy: *A rod that has no fenders*

Overwind: *A bad thing and means to run an engine faster in RPM then its designed limits

Power Parker: People that arrive as early as possible to events and shows to get prime parking spots, usually frowned on by hot rodders

Rubber Rake: *A rake achieved by the use of *big tires in the back and little tires in the front or possibly an unbreakable garden tool

Sano: *A rod that is absolutely spotless (sanitary)

Saw: *See Chop

Skins: *Tires

Smoothy: *A hotrod that has had all raised portions of the body removed including moldings and sometimes chrome

Spots: *Short for a spot light, also refers to disk brakes

Stone: *A slooooow car*

Stones: *Short for Firestone tires*

Stove Bolt: *A nick name for a rod powered by a Chevy inline six cylinder engine

Stuffer: *Supercharger

Uncorked: *Running without mufflers

Wide Weenies: Large rear tires and I am not going there

Zoomy: *A wild street rod with open exhaust pipes
