So I'm watching Rides on TLC right now and Jay Leno is pulling a Deusenburg Model X out of a garage where it's been for 40 years.... Well there is something else sitting next to it.... Hmmmm... could be an old Ford... anyone ID it yet?
I was wondering the same thing. My opinion of Jay Leno changed though when he talked about hotrods on an episode. He said he doesn't like them at all, hates the look of them. Funny considering he put that monster bigblock twin turbo in some ugly 70s car, seemed pretty hotrod to me.
I'm kind of digging the show, and the Deusenburg... some of the Concours stuff was kind of cool as well... the steam stuff is kind of neat as well..
I don't have cable so I can't comment on the show, but didn't leno buy the blastolene special? That's a hotrod if ever there was one. http://www.blastolene.com/The_Special/index.htm
Yes, he bought the B. Special. I saw a clip of him and moustache man driving it. He also has several other cars that could be considered hotrods. I think he just talks to say something, not always what he means. He is a real car guy, not just a money bag that has stuff built. He actually gets dirty.
I think anyone who has a 55 Buick is OK with me despite its lack of a nailhead. I think the, what was it 600 horse makes it a little OK.
Very cool episode of Rides that's for sure and the other car under all that **** was a roadster. You could clearly see the top. Rudy seems to think it might have been a Pontiac??
Dusies are cool cars. I had a fun time looking at the collection at teh Imperial Palace in Vegas a few years back. I like the X better than the 30s models, they got huge in later years.
Very good episode. I read the story on that Duesy in Popular Mechanics I think. Seemed like he went and visited the elderly lady that had it quite a number of times before she agreed to sell it. I can't take the likes of Jesse James, Teutals, or Boyd. Jay however is the anti christ of those guys. He likes the roots of all thing automotive from what his collection tells. I envy him for makin it and having the expendible to make his dreams reality. Thank you Jay for putting all those pieces of art back on the road, AND DRIVING THEM LIKE THEY WERE MEANT TO BE.
wish i had cable. i'd love to see that episode. Leno is one of my idols. i love just about everything with wheels and his collection is to be envied for sure. i'd give just about anything to spend a day with him walking around his collection. from what i understand the man realy knows his ****. BTW the wife is watching the Tonight Show in the other room right now .
That was just amazing. It really cleaned up better than I thought it would too. His collection is unbelievable and so is what he does for the hobby. Is there a video of his garage or any kind of in depth feature on it? I'd looooooove to see more of it and he never returns my calls....
Jay builds a RatRod out of a Deusenburg Probably the coolest thing I have ever seen. I cant say enough how cool that is. He kept mentioning things like "Patina" He is a car guys car guy. I admire his style and taste for everything automotive, and the fact that he drives all his stuff. For a Rich and famous guy he RULES for sure.
When I was in high school and we were getting our Model A speedster ready for the Great Race, Jay donated $1000 to our team to buy new tires for the A. He left a message on my teacher's answering machine and he still has the tape. Jay Leno rocks!
A buddy of mine (that knows some of the guys over there) says it's another Duesy, but it's ****ed up or modified to the point Leno or his "guy" didn't want it at the time. At least that's what i'm told.
Great show, one of the best in a long time...till next weeks Dukes of Hazzard episode I think As soon as they opened the garage, I was all...Hmmmm...nice Dusenberg, but whats that on the right? I'm thinking Model A, as the tail light looked kinda right. Did anyone else notice they didn't fix the big dent on the left rear corner of the roof either
According to the show, Jay knows Petina.....and the feel....(brother) Lets have a show at Pebble beach w/ all of the nice cars. The commentator is killing me....his intelligence is so fake and book written....and dry. OMG
Hey unclescooby, for more big color pics of Jay's garage check out Ultimate Garages at your local book store.
I really hadn't had much of an 'opinion' about Leno, not good, not bad. Until I read an editorial he wrote for either Road and Track, or Car and Driver, which was online. In it he criticizes today's society for it's idolation of "workers" who don't work. He writes how sorry it is that America is losing it's edge in manufacturing, and how there are fewer and fewer talented machinists, and mechanics. How this is going to preceed a real shortage in our society for people who work with their hands, and trouble down the line. It seems he really appreciates workmanship, AND the workmen! My kinda guy! Sees the dim future of America for getting away from it's roots. Engineering, hard work, and imagination.
Since this turned into a "I love Jay" thread, he helped get a turbine engine for the only '63-'64 Chrysler Turbine car that runs and drives. They were the proto-types that were at the NY world fair. The owner had contacted Chrysler for an engine with no help. A call to Jay got him one . The car was at Hershey a few years ago and has been on moustache man's show, too.
I met Jay back in 1985 at a convention of Shelby American cars in Dearborn.....He had just taken delivery of an aluminum bodied 427 Cobra replicar and he was out on Michigan ave. with the rest of the guys turning the rear tures into a molten rubbery mess......A very cool and cordial guy....
I have it on extremely good authority, the Jay has been creaming his jeans to get hold of Had Rodfield's Allison powered 55 Chev aircraft handler. Haddy has been trying to get him to lay out the big bickies for a while now, and has even driven it to the man's house for a bit of extra ***ilation..... or so I hear.
I wondered that too but you can bet in was in the upper six figures if not millions. Jay's coolness comes from the fact that he was once a mechanic, and had to sleep in his buick in the early days of his comedy career.
I like Leno, he drives his stuff instead of stuffing it away in some mueseum. I could care less about Dennis Gage (moustache man) or his show "My Cl***ic ***"
