Not to sure about if I have posted this in the incorect place. If I have please delete... My question is I have been looking for a SBC motor for my shop truck build. It is a 1954 Chev shortbox. Not much out there any more as far as good old motors. So I was looking at a JEGS crate motor. The price is right and it is a new block 260HP 4 bolt main. Has anyone had any luck or bad luck with one of these motors???? Thanks for any info.
I used one of these in a '47 Ford coupe a few years back. they're a good ,solid engine, the cam could stand to be changed to a more performance type grind like a 268 or so.
Known a few guys to have had em and just as a stock motor were happy daily drivers. I had one in my model A and it was around $1450 for the basic stock motor and did just fine if you want a stocker. Usually around this time they have free shipping on crate motors or include a free hei or something. Either way saves you $150ish
I'd like to have $5 for every 260 HP 350 crate motors that are in old cars. Replace the cam, add a four barrel and headers your probably close to 300 HP. You can't go wrong for the price.
just to make this discussion clear... it's not actually a "Jegs" motor , they just sell them. others like Summit and Speedway sell them too. the are from GM Parts and are made in Mexico. 3 year 36,000 mile warranty if installed in a GM vehicle. i think only 1 year 12,000 mile warranty if put in a non GM car? i've used a bunch of them too and they have been fine. as already said , add a better cam/intake/headers and you have a good performing motor for cheap
In the last year I have purchased and installed three of these motors from Jeg's and could not be happier. Great value for the money and performance.
