  1. Anybody make it out for the Jimmy Shine casting call on Friday?
I sent my video explaining how I’m trying to open my shop after being medically separated from the Air Force after 12 years of being a “bomber guy” (B-52’S RULE!), and with a baby on the way. Hopefully with some of my skills, and some of there TV drama b*llsh*t, I can get a break!! If anybody went, let me know how it was there.

  2. So what's the status of this show? Saw Jimmy Shine on a TLC show re-capping SEMA and he said he couldn't talk about it. So I did a search here for the topic, and only found this. He did say the show is called "Hard Shine" and it will be on TLC, I think he said starting in March. Anyone know what the format is?

It's not a drama fest. It's about a talented traditional hot rod guy training a group of people to build traditional rods and the ones that have the stuff get to stay and work at SO-CAL. I'm sure there will be some people will have a little "wish it was me" jealousy, but its supposed to be a good show from what I hear.

Sounds like this guys' "ego" is hurt that its Jimmy Shine and not him.

Every time I have met Jimmy he seems to be a real person - lets give him the the respect he deserves. The man is talented!

I flew out from Ohio, it was a last minute decision, I went because I found myself actually afraid to go and try it..........And looked at it as a chance to visit the one and only EVEL and meet his wife, and to check out Cali. since I had never been their, maybe sneek a visit at a shop or two.........I went to the casting call, thought I had done very well........Evel took me to the NHRA museum, I had a chance to stand next to the Stone Woods and Cook Willy's, which is a car I thought I would never have a chance to see in person, I called a friend of mine Sean Cook from Ohio, which is Ray Cooks son, Ray was the last one to drive that car in car at the track back then.....I told him I was standing next to his fathers car.....and he goes but its in Cali, I said I know.........I did not tell too many that I was making this trip.........Evel then took me to meet the guys at Hollywood HotRods, Let me tell you they are all a great bunch of guys and do some awsome work, Then we went to visit Jimmy White, but he was out laying on the beach....So I will have to try to visit again the next time...........So Evel took me over to Bobby Greens place and showed me his killer salt car and his great collection of goodies.........I was amazed how everyone just worked out in their driveways and all, no one could tell me when the last time it had rained their.........great picture perfect weather.............I looked at all the papers and reasearched pricing on housing..and all I can say is WTF........crazy prices compared to what I am used too................I toured the SO-CAL speed shop, its set up real nice and actually had lots of tools along with Hollywood HotRods another well equipped shop.....Jimmy Shine was nothing but nice to everyone.............I flew home, and was called by someone and asked if I was still available..........and then another three weeks went by and another call saying I made the final mix for the show.........then more time went by and another call telling me I did not make it on the show.................In the end I was told the the higher ups at the network said I did not come across crazy enough and I had too many positives......and thats kool, but more importantly I learned that my wife supported me in this adventure and was willing to raise my daughter for over six months on her own, I got to visit Evel and meet his awsome wife and his four legged friends.I learned I was willing to quite my job and try something different, I learned that the people I worked for supported me, I was heckled by others..................but I went, and will never have to wonder , if I should have tried because I did not go..................I would do it all over again and would not think twice...Littleman

so i guess theyre wanting a bunch of "Jims from Taxi" and Kramers to run a garage. Sounds totally believable to me. i still dont think producers get it. real car/bike building is only going to be interesting to those who love the nuts and bolts aspects of it. the only time the general populas gets wowed is in the final product when sitting pretty at a show. i bet shine gets irritated with it quickly. at least for a while we wont have to look at the stuff other builders bring.

Littleman.Nice story. " Not Crazy enough" Sounds like the Producers are going the Orange County Choppers formula, which is pretty much what all these shows are....

I've only seen Jimmy's hemi coupe clip by MFS? Your story here helps to paint a picture of exploring another world. Much appreciated, esp. about how your family supported something important to you.
Knowing how one-tracked I can become, I try to support my girlfriend's dream-work in return. Nice story Littleman!

Man, you totally beat me to the punch.

I was thinking the very same kinds of things.

It's like - hey isn't this supposed to be a show where a guy who's good in a garage gets a chance to work there? No!?! You mean all I have to do is act goofy and crazy and make "good TV"? Sounds like Jimmy's going to get a great new shop hand

Maybe they should call it Jackass Garage(TM) (sorry Germ), it has a nice ring - plus you understand from the top that it's just another reality show...

Let me guess the final four line-up. A poser white guy (the baseline character), a black guy (or some kind of ethnic race - we'll call him the token character and hope not to get sued by Comedy Central), a woman, a homosexual (this character could also be the woman or the token), and a "radical" or "against the grain" charater (this character can have the traits of any of the above - but has to be very hard to get along with or is otherwise hard to train for the job, aka doesn't work well with others).

It's really too bad - Jimmy Shine is a future hall-of-fame type rodder.

Hollywood has to find a way to dick up all of the really good ideas.

Could be some guy's (or girl's) lucky day - instead it's just going to be about the "interaction" of the people. cough **DRAMA** cough cough.....

It'll never be about the guy who'd otherwise never get this chance - it'll always be about "good TV" (which, strangely, we all hate - but it's all that's ever shown).

  19. I don't know you personally, but I know your work – and it's amazing.
In my eyes, Shine has nothing on you as far as talent and an eye for detail are concerned.

If you had made the show it would have been interesting to see the dynamic between you and Shine, 'cause I think you both could easily lead the show.

So keep your chin up – the next big thing is coming your way.

  23. Wow, what a cool adventure. Great to be able to be close to one of the legends S.W.C. Willys, saw this thing perform as a young-un and is etched in my head 4-ever. Littleman rules, one of our own makin a mark on the real hot rod world. Congrats bro. Sololobo

Personally, if I had aspirations of becoming a top tier builder I would stay as far away from the TLC/Discovery Channel/"wear a beanie on my head in California cuz I want to be just like Jesse" scene as I could...

Thanks everyone!..........I never was bumed about not making it, I think I walked away still learning alot......anyways like I told the producer, I just got permission to add onto my attached garage to make it larger and am allowed to build a small addition to my garage out back..........so its on!........But during some short conversations with Mr. Shine, I know he is not shooting for a show with all the drama, but one that would set the bar higher and actually educate the veiwer.......but the higher ups that are footing the bill may get what they want, so we will have to see.....I only have mad respect for what Jimmy is trying to do and for everyone that stopped what they were doing and went to try out..............I wish them all the luck in the world.........Littleman..................They are roughing my addition at home as I type this..now that makes me smile, seven car parking off the house makes me smile.........and a big empty shop to jump around out back should prove to be evil...

I agree, but I was looking at it as a short term adventure and a chance maybe to learn something new..........I really like the job that I have now, its going on 15 yrs. since I have started, It allows me to do the hotrod hobby and keep a roof over our heads....I looked at it as I do my jumping out of perfectly good airplanes in the military experience while locked and loaded....we only have so much time on earth to try different things, and as I get older it seems as if time is accelerating at a rapid rate..........I do now see the value of the peace and quiet working out of a back yard garage does offer.and do believe if you want to make it while working out back it can be done...Littleman.........

    1) I think Jimmys work speaks for itself, at least what I've seen. He builds pretty cool stuff to.
    2) The producers know who watch t.v. and they pitch their shows to be more appealing to them. The people that are usually watching these shows crave the drama and b.s. If the shows were pitched to appeal to HAMBers than they wouldn't make much money because there wouldn't be too many people watching, we are types that would rather be putting our hands to it and not watching it on t.v. at least I would hope so anyway.

I honestly believe that 99% of the people in this country are good people... I met Jimmy once while hanging out with Jimmy White a long time ago... He was a super nice guy.

That said, I really think these shows can do a lot more damage than good to a person's reputation. Think long-term...

And littleman, I absolutely love the way you attack life. That fuckin' rules...

If Littleman has too many "positives" then it sounds to me that it will be drama oriented after all. Jimmy can't bitch at Dave for fucking up because he doesn't fuck up enough. Ha Ha Ha

I will watch it anyway becuase it beats most of the crap that is on TV these days. I usually watch them out in my garage while I drink beer and work on my own junk. VH1 classic is screwing with the timing of "Metal Mania" and it really pisses me off.

Dave, it is for the best anyway. Remember, it isn't easy being famous! Ha Ha Ha
