Update on the car:

I spoke with Joe the other day and he is digging for some more fotos of the car when it was done.
So far I came up with these shots of it.

The car was built in 1970 for Jess Alcala, when Joe had his shop on Los Feliz

Joe did all of the body modifications and paint.
Joe describes the grill as a one of a kind that was meticulously built for the car.

The car had a 427 in it.

The car took several awards to include the Elegance award presented to Joe and Jess at the Grand National Roadster Show in 1972.

Well there you have it, I'll keep ya all up dates as we find out more
    information.

thanx,

tha Moldy one

I'm not a big 70 era custom fan but I think it's kinda cool. It's almost 40 years old at this point so it's it has some "history" to it. Well worth restoring in my opinion.

Right now that car is in the gap so many 60s customs were in 10-15 years ago. Cars with significant pedigree being restyled because the era hadn't moved into mainstream cool yet. We all seem to holler about the desecration of those cars but yet some of us would willingly desecrate this GNRS elegance winner?????

I personally think that car is awesome, except for the nose. But when considered in it's timeframe, the nose falls into place. I could say the exact same for HAMB friendly kustoms with quad headlights canted at 45 degrees.

It would be cool to restore that car back to it's show circuit glory.. but please... for the love of GOD... don't put that cushy gray crap back on the dash LOL.

That stuff belongs on couches with questionable stains you see in whore houses.

Not that I would know or anything.

Not one of the best styling efforts of that day or any day, is it? A GM example similar to the Merc convertible sedan destroyed by Metranga out of the East Coast years earlier.

There was a time when I would have seen this car in a display at an indoor car show, and I would have dug it......My taste has changed now, but even though this car has gone out of style, It should be preserved.....a lot of hot rods, like the ones we're emulating now, were discarded when the muscle car thing started, and we wish we had them now.....I'd like to see someone put this Humpty Dumpty back together again for the future.....Crushed velvet interior and all.....It's a forgotten chunk of custom history that should be preserved.....The hardest part of the puzzle would be finding the right guy with the crazed vision and dedication to pull it off......I hope he's out there......I'll be cheering him on.......

Paul Kelly pointed out to me that Howard Gribble recently scanned two photos of this car in its glory days on his Flickr site.

Watch your mouth, I live in a "trailer" on 9 acres in the country, and it's all paid for. No bankers breathin' down my neck for mortgage payments, and no need for bailouts because I tried to keep up with someone else's ideas. Also, if it's a "trailer", I want to see you hook it up to some of your junk and pull it. It is a good thing that another product from one of the great customizers has been found, and is being cared for. Thanks to the original poster for showing it to us, and the same to the owner for trying to preserve it.

  25. I have never seen this car before, but with a Joe Bailon Candy Red paint it would be wild.
Amazing how we want people to post pictures of car that have been found and then every wannabe jumps on it and has to offer an opinion on whether they like it.
Thumbsup, thumbs down, what difference does it make.
If someone likes it enough to buy it and hopefully restore it, that is what this hobby is about.

The paint seems to bring it together for me at least.
