Sorry but I have to rant... [IMG]

I know this forum is a place for the traditional rodders, American cars and the love for the hobby. But, in some cases, those certain cars are out of our reach and we have to subs***ute for something that we can enjoy, with hopes of getting our ultimate ride.

I have a good friend and HAMB'er who has to unfortunately go that route. Because of school and a part time job, his budget only allowed him something that he thought would be cool to have, plus own a piece of small history. Its not American, but of the German type. A 1956 Panel VW Bus. I dont know how many of you all have seen them on the road, but from my experience, I have never seen on at all.

He has been surfing the HAMB for some time and enjoys the site, the rides and knowledge brought forth. He posted his ride (which was not his first post), knowing its contents, hoping for a "Way Cool" or something, but instead got a "get that piece of sh*t off my board, your in the wrong place, you should be posting that here [www.VWBUS.com]" at***ude. I know I have seen countless VW "Roadsters" and "RPU's" that got thumbs up, but an at***ude as this...I dont quite understand and a bit dissapointed.

Im a bit dissapointed since other makes like Triumphs, BSA's, motorcycles in general, foreign cars (once a Mercedes "rod" flashed and it was highly praised) have gotten the "thumbs up"...even some of the other HAMB'ers who flashed thier VW rides got "prop's" for thier hard work, and my buddy gets sh*t on...for just trying to be a gearhead alike. His intention was not to "take over" the board w/ his german ****, but to show off what he had, equally to something like a 32 Roadster, or a 56 Packard. As popular or strange as they are, I think a rare VW Bus can be just a cool too.

My buddy's intention is to build an early 30's RPU, when he finished w/ school, and his pocketbook can afford it too. [IMG]

Needless to day, he is a bit pissed and dissapointed, and I dont blame him...and probably wont return to the HAMB either. (which is bull-sh*t)

Do you have to be a Veteran of the board to get some props for an "other than traditional" ride?

    Just my 2 cents.....Done!

  2. Those buses are kewl.I have built a few, even beat out the Californians with it at a few Bug-Ins. [IMG]
Tell your buddy to ignore the idiots. This board has a few of em,seems some days its over run with goofs.
I'd rather look at his bus then another 'me too 32'ford or a 49 merc.
Your exactly right about the Trumps and Nortons.
Now you can prolly see why ****,Axle and a bunch of other notable hot rodders have left.......Shiny

all in all i will say i think that it's ********. but you do have to think this is a traditional rod and custom board. i will say that i have always and will always have a warm spot in my heart for vw's. i've had a buuuunnnncccchhhh of 'em in my 18 or so years of messing with cars. they were what i cut my teeth on and a nicely done cal look still makes me drool more than most dozen cars i see around here. alot of people say they don't fit but people were building little hotrods and customs out of 'em in the 60s left and right. they are great first cars to learn to turn wrenches on. cheap fun and for the most part with little effort will run forever. i'm sorry your friend got the **** shaft. that truly ****s. i will glady talk with anyone building anything at least to a degree. why you say? because a guy that has the same p***ion of toying with this stuff even if his style of choice of car differs from mine is better than a turd who has no clue. it's easy to find a common tie between most any two people if you take the time to find it. most people have the head to far up their *** to find the common bond we all share. sad really...ken....

ditto, ***hole responses are not cool ,but yeah, its too far off topic, and it is a KNOWN issue here that VW stuff draws a sharp rebuke.

So, I feel bad that your buddy got treated like ****, but at the same time, ya gotta have a thick skin to tolerate this place, "kindler gentler" ******** or not.

I think it should get meaner and nastier, but thats just me!

(yes, I have two of the leaky ****ers at the moment, and I'm still anti VW.)

  6. Like they said, hell, my lil bro is a HAMBer in school and you dont see him posting pics of the 3 late model Grand Prix' he has owned!?

  7. Personaly, I like all the chopped up bugs that have a distinctly "traditional" feel. Not sure why they are so heartily bashed around here...but they are, and that's the way it's gonna be I guess. The sad thing is that so much other WAAAAAY off topic stuff is allowed to slide...at least the bugs are sorta traditional-car-related...as opposed to neon-driving-newbie-chicks, ugly-ebay-car-bashing, suicide-watch and constant girlfriend/wife swappin chit-chat threads that keep popping up. There's still alot he could learn and apply around here. It should just be more motivation to build something cool outta whatever he's workin with! What do I know, though...I drive a 6 door, 6 cylinder van. [IMG]

  8. Yes Barnett, but your car is not a VW Van. I also like VWs, I had one in the early 90s (a 62 Bug), but I see no reason for these guys to come in here and play SHOW-n-Tell over something that is a fringe item.

I'm not too big on the "Ryan this, Ryan that" ********, but the dude made clearly known his DISTINCT dislike for them.

I would think that for how many people here kiss that dudes ***, that should be enough.

    Girlfreind/Wife swapping IS traditional! [IMG]

To verbal attack someone who KNOW'S better is one thing. The topic and trad. must draw new line's as well. No Jap bike's period. It's easy to be cold.

  11. you asked so here is my input:

i'm sure your friends VW is cool...but i was always have been told that this site was for TRADIONAL hot rods...

now if i posted pictures of my airplane....or of my old Honda motorcyles..would that be accepted? i don't think so!

but it's not up to me..it's not my site..RYAN is the man..and it is HIS rules... i come here to see , hear and learn about tradional hot rods

should anything you can drag home be accepted here?

there are a lot of aother sites for VW stuff..what would happen if i posted pictures of my hot rods on a homebuilt aircraft website? or a VW site? i know for a fact if i posted pictures of a hot rod on EAA'S site ot the VJMA's site i would be flamed

i'm not trying to give you a hard time....BUT what did you and your freind expect? hugs and kiss's? why do you want to go where your stuff is not appriecated? why do you need an atta boy from someone that will not ever give you one?

like i said , i'm not trying to rain on your parade...just my opinion

  12. Hey, I'm not arguing...I pick my fights carefuly, and this isn't one I can win. I just hate to see the kid go away...he might be able to learn AND contribute around here, even if he is building the "wrong" vehicle. Know what I mean? I just threw the comment about my van in because I have directly, and indirectly, caught "hell" for even messing with it....which is fine by me, since I've always been on the outside lookin in. Narrow mindedness has got us the messed up world we live in today. Sorry Ryan I had to say that! [IMG] [IMG] This is what he could do with his Kombi, if he had the bucks of course. Of course every VW should have an injected flathead Geoff aka Whodaky

so, if i had a anglia g***er, it'd be ok to post a pic?
    i'm comfused...

56 packard is a traditional rod or custom?
a stone stock 63 buick ain't either a rod OR a custom, it's just an old car.

until ya DO something with it.
takes more than scallops and primer to make it anything BUT an old car.
stock engine rebuilds don't count either.
keep in mind that a vw ain't foreighn in germany and this IS a world-wide thing, or haven't you noticed where some of these guys are from?

no, i don't have a vw, i hate those ****ing things!
doesn't mean the next guy has to, though.
think i'd rather have a vw that an old mans camaro (32 ford), ****, EVERYBODY has one of those!

    traditional=rut=conformity
    i prefer to be different.

I remember seeing a show on the History Channel that was either on VW or Hitler (not sure) and they were talking about the beginnings of VW. I remember them saying that Henry Ford was a close friend of Hitler and a lot of the machinery that was used to build our T's, A's and our V8's were either given or sold to Hitler so that he could start production on the VW.

  25. I, myself, don't care about people posting VW stuff, as long as it's high quality... Not like football helmet chop we saw lately..

But, that's not really what I wanted to reply to... What I did want to reply to is: You say that he can't afford to buy a decent rod or custom, but can afford a '56 VW panel van..? Holy ****!! Are they that cheap overthere. Overhere those things go for high, high $$$$!!! It's ridiculous!!

And I saw the word: Mercedes rod... Bleeeehh!! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

I'm guessin a lot of the pathological dislike of VWs on this board is the result of early traumatic experiences...years ago I had the typical midwestern rust bomb 66 beetle. Floor made of aluminum covered with roofing tar. Ten below zero so when the starter went out, we'd put a hubcap full a charcoal under the oil pan and bump start it. Too cold and miserable to put a starter in it.
It bump started exceptionally easily though, just a hand on the door pollar and a few steps and it would putt right off.
One spring day I killed it at a light, said to my wife, "Hop out and give us a bump"
She stepped out only to place her foot in a foot of icy sludge with dog **** floating in it. Got back in the car and with a ferocious angry look said "This car is GONE and we're gettin a Ford, you are NEVER gettin a Volkswagen again. I mean today"
Traded it for a basket case 500 Triumph.
When the new owner took the motor apart, he showed me one piston that had been cracked in half for years, rounded edges and burns on the crack. Zero compression.
No wonder it bump started so easy.

excellent point. They aren't cheap here either!!!

next thing. the internet has a place for everyone to find a forum, this is not VW. your buddy can post and learn but don't expect expert help on his non traditional ride.

on the other side of the coin, stuff a Hemi in a Honda and you have an interesting Hot Rod. not traditional but you wouldn't get egged for showing a photo.

I've always wondered why rodders that were the first to stuff big motors into small (foreign) cars (Bantam's, Fiat's, Anglia's, Hillmans. Austin Healeys, Sprite's mostly British cars) were and are "Hot Rod Legends" do the same thing to a Japaneese or German car and you're a Foureyed Geek!! that too is traditional (making fun of those who think out of the box) [IMG]

A Willy's was never cool till it got a V-8

I used to use the tag line

"I want to be different, just like everybody else"

it was so true that it wasn't funny! so I dropped it [IMG]

What was that comment about about the Rubbie bikers with their spotless black leather and $20k Harleys??? Something like "All my friends were non-conformists, so I became one too"...

LOL, this gets brought up so offen. Traditional/custom can be anything so that is not a good reference.

I remember Vans being a big custom thing in the 70's, but I wouldnt post one here

I like Honda Rune motorcycles, but I wouldnt post it here.

I like the new Dodge Magnum, but I wouldnt post it here.

I like the old volvo's, but I wouldnt post them here.

I like V Dubs, but I wouldnt post it here.

But on the other hand I would rather see a 56 panel VW then some of the other **** I see posted here! LOL

Oh well its not who you know but who you blow

I can under stand the disapointment that he has due to the abuse on his ride but there is no reason he cannot hang out and keep checking the cl***ifieds and get a project. I did and have a old T body headed up here it aint much but the price is right and I have a place to start. There are better things to do than be pissed off about whether somebody likes my ride or not. Take it with a grain of salt. hell this is the internet.
