BTW, I got my info from Foreign Car Guide April 1965.
But a quick Google search filled in the gaps.
According to some websites Gurney raced the Inch Pincher in '63 and '64 to a victory.
    And got DQ'd in '64.

And to me, the fact that the 40 year old battles of a guy like Vittone are interesting enough to argue about today is a measure of respect for the man...

  2. This isn't a democracy... Ryan pays the bills, this is the internet and you can't sue for getting your feelings hurt, yet.

I'm not saying that Volkswagons are "traditional" but they HAVE been around longer than the small block Chevy.

  6. Metalshapes, I just got off the phone with Joe Vittone, and you are correct, I stand corrected. It was the "non-stock valve springs" that got Gurney DQ'ed, according to Joe, so he said "screw it" and gave the car to (EMPI employee at the time) Dean Lowry to play with, and the Inch Picher was born. I have an old check payout stub from the (now defunct) Carlsbad Raceway, dated July 13th, 1968, for $150.00 for Top Street Eliminator, made out to Dean Lowry. This was a year before he left to start Deano Dyno-Soars, so he must have been racing the Inch Pincher

Since this is a subject I have been thinking about a lot recently, I guess I'll trow in my 2 pennies:

First, let me say that I drove a friend's VW one time not long after I got my driver's license. I swore I'd never own one of those things.

But, I have to say that I don't see how they are any more off-topic than motorcycles. There. I said it. Prolly pissed off 90% of you.

But really, my history books show that bugs have nearly as significant a place in American history as the Triumphs and BSAs mentioned... but neither are hot rods or customs (in the trad. sense that this board is s'posed to be about.)

This is not my board; I don't make the rules here. If someone posts a VW, I don't hafta look at it, right? Just like when I go to a car event and a Viper Red 34 3-W with billet wheeels pulls in, I don't hafta loo at that either (prolly won't even SEE it anyway!).

We could go on and on about how traditional is traditional? Some of you will tell me to take my radials and alternator and go home, while others like to stay in the same lane on the highway and have an electrical system that works.

'Nuff ramblin. I'll shut up now.

    Ryan doesn't like bugs.

Although, he seemed tolerant of them when I was posting pics of mine as we were putting it back together and painting it....until people that couldnt keept their ****ing yaps shut had to come around and ***** like they needed their diaper changed.

But, in some cases, those certain cars are out of our reach and we have to subs***ute for something that we can enjoy, with hopes of getting our ultimate ride.

[/ QUOTE ] That was from the first post. I dont think the rules should change but when something that shouldnt be put up is put up, there are better ways to go about it then calling it a piece of ****. I want a traditional rod and a kustom but I need something I can drive every day Ive got a wife and three kids. So I can afford a 97 ram black flamed lowered and I did it all myself when I bought it ,it was white and had 160,000 miles on it but I could afford it. It has no tilt no A/C and like I said I did it all body paint mechanical work all of it. I wonder how many traditional rod and kustom people can say they did it all. Ill bet more than half but the *****ers are most likely the other less than half

Volkswagens and the HAMB are compatible.
Here's a fine example from the bend in the road at Bonneville. [IMG]

Now this is traditional! But what do I know, I'm driving a Chevelle. Everybody knows the only thing worse than a VW is a (GASP) muscle car. I always figured it was the people, not the cars. Traditional is the respect for the skills and the willingness to learn to do it your way. If Vic Edelbrock, Barney Navarro, Alex X and Isky were born in the 80's, they'd be sticking NOS in Hondas and streamlining Kawasakis. You know it's true. [IMG]

Still, I don't come here looking for Chevelles, there are better sites on the net for that. I'm looking for ideas on how to do my Model A coupe and to yap with car people who have do it yourself values. And the HAMBers I've met at CHRR, Bonneville and wherever have always been the kind of people I want to hang with. Even when they show up in the wife's minivan or a rental car. Tell the kid to come back. He could learn a lot here. And some of us could learn something too. We didn't all start out with A-V8's and custom mercs. We need to stay more focused on the traditional stuff, cut back on the drama and remember what drew us to this place or it bogs down and gets lost in all the ********. Still there's no reason for all the pissy at***udes lately. I wonder how much tech and how many cool cars I've missed that flew by and got lost under all the drama and O/T ****.

    That's funny Joe...

Cuz I've been researching the 60's Super Stock cars to figure out how to make my straight axled Nova "Period Correct", and from what I've found, some of the first full bodied cars to get straight axles (so called "G***ERS", even though they weren't) were GTO's and Fullsize MOPARS in like 1964.

Seems a little closer to "musclecar" than "traditional" to me, but what do I know?
So I have to ask... is a 65 GTO with a straight axle cool, or gay?
