I just bought a 1959 Buick Invicta more-door as a donor for the 31 Roadster on a 32 chassis (FTF)! The body is missing from the rockers down but the 401 (445) four barrel, turns over and has good compression. It has the open dyna trans, and came with the aluminum drums on all four corners! (Nice front bumper and headlight bezels)! I'd like to use the rear end for the sake of gear match in a car that weighs 1,500 lb's lighter, but I don't know the width (flange to flange) and would prefer a posi! I got this thing cheap and I want use as much as possible including the finned aluminum drums. And I want to get as much cheap H.P. out of it as possible and I'm looking for ideas. Mark
One of the guys in my club might be interested in some trim parts if you want to sell any. Send me an email or a PM if you're interested.
That 445 is the advertized torque for the engine. It's a torque monster, not a HP rpm screamer. It'll spin your tires on that lightweight all day. Hell it spun the tires on my 59 Invicta wagon just fine and it probably weighed 3 times what your rod will. Good score on the finned drums too. Check and see if any fins are broken off and if there's enough meat left to turn them before you get too excited tho.
59's were enclosed driveline. Yours musta been "upgraded." Specially with the AL drums on the rear. I can use some trim pieces off that thing if they're any good. Did you get a 4dr post or izzit a HT?
The Invicta was top of the line. Buick's wannabe caddy. Mine was open drive 445 wildcat special, monster 4 barrel, finned brakes, wonderbar radio with the under the carpet station changer*****on, dual exhaust, all power seats and windows, air, you name it.
Lots of good parts potential there. Cool steering wheel for example. Don't overlook the small parts that you can use besides the obvious drums and drivetrain pieces. I bet the engine will fire up and run without much trouble. As stated, the engine torque rating is 445 ft-lbs, and it would be a 401 cu inch. The rearend should have bolt in axles that I think could have the housing narrowed and the axles to be shortened and re-splined. That way if you need a good rearend, it would be fairly cheap. Posi is pretty rare (and therefore expensive), so you may want to consider another rearend if you really want a posi set-up.
