Just bought a 63 ranchero have???????

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by SLAMIT, Jan 6, 2010.

  1. I've always liked early rancheros, ran across this one a couple months ago. It looked too clean to be left to rot but too many projects, too little time and no storage left. If you need any misc parts, I always looking for an excuse for a junkyard tour.

About time you got a Ford :) ....

Can't wait to see what you do with it....

  3. the mustang leafs do work. re-read what i wrote to you the first time. the only thing you have to change is the rear spring hanger. the shelby drop is as mentioned, lowering the upper control arm holes down 1 inch and back 1/8". you don't have to worry about the balljoint bind, shelby did it this amount cause it was the most you can get away with before binding. i drove my car like this for over 10 years with no problems.

check with some 4x4 guys in your area for spring makers, most heavy truck shops have spring making equipment. Friends used to get springs made for lifted trucks very reasonably, if your lowering it anyway you can get a stiff spring to still haul a load at the correct ht. the spring places Ive dealt with will usually give you a free adjustment for ride ht. had the same heavy truck place reweld and balance driveshafts for me another common for 4x4 guys.

Ok so now its home and in the garage. Weird a car in the garage.......
It's a 62 not a 63 like the sellers thought. I am not a pro and don't really know the difference between the years so if someone wants to school me.

Needs some lovin for sure but I couldnt get past the interior. So much potential.

I wish it had the trim around the bed but it doesnt. bummer.

I pulled out some receipts from the glove box and they have dumped a bit of cah in the thing over the last 10 years.

Gregg. Ironic. it has a receipt from a shop in Austin. and it still has Texas plates. It's a sign.

So now to come up with a plan of attack.

By the way. is there an easy way to tell if it has a 144ci or a 170ci.

So many questions now but i dont know where to start yet.

So here are a few shitty pics. its dark and cold and Im not in the mood for fancy shots.

I just bought my 63 and it was sold to me as a 62. The difference is the grilles. The cars also have different back windows after a certain date. If the engine is the original color it is a 170. The 144 has a blue valve cover. This pic is the 63 grille on my car.

I wish mine were as nice as yours. I want a cheap driver that is reliable. The 144 has a cracked head and I have a 170 to put in(it was free). I have to fix the floors and lower quarters. It will get a flat black paint job and slammed. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3819974

funny. their is a bubble top buick in my buddy's shop right now with dull red paint, crazy (!) heavy flaked silver roof, bagged and sitting on the ground and i think it has thin whites too, can't remember.

Rad I think I gotta check that out.

Geeman's 51 blows my fricken mind with his paint scheme so since the interior is red I think I wanna stick to somethin like that.

Half thought about doing some prep then having maaco shoot the red then I'll flake the roof.

Cannot remember the last time I saw back up lamps in a falcon tailgate. That was an accessory and I think extremely rare. Looks like a nice old car. Never was a 170 fan. They're OK when they're fresh, but when the piston blowby gets in the cab it'll gag ya. Have fun with it. I had a '61, '62, two '64's and 2 '65's in my time. The '61 broke down on me on a trip from Carson City to Los Angeles and I abandoned it in Little Lake, Ca. I used to see it sitting behind the Chevron station there for years. Then one day it was gone. Now everything in Little Lake is gone, and it's just a name on old maps. That was the only car I ever walked away from. That would've been about 1982 so it was just an old worn out POS then.
